Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep original videos separate from playback-ready copies, and build an explicit playlist manifest from only the files you intend to stream. That makes the rotation easier to review and update, while keeping encoder settings, logs and local recordings in their own places. The directory layout below is a practical starting point, not a YouTube requirement.
Use separate folders for originals, playback files and operations
A useful starting layout for a VPS is:
/srv/youtube-stream/
media/
source-video/ # original files; keep as received
stream-ready/ # copies used by the encoder
audio/ # optional separate audio assets
excluded/ # items deliberately kept out of rotation
playlists/
video.txt # generated, ordered list of stream-ready files
config/ # encoder settings; keep stream keys private
logs/ # service and encoder logs
recordings/ # local recordings or archive copies
This layout follows a public community VPS example; its paths are illustrative, not a standard imposed by YouTube. The example’s resolution, bumper schedule and service settings are specific to that operator. See the community setup and operations notes.
Keep source files intact
Put incoming files in source-video/ and preserve them as received. Make a separate playback copy in stream-ready/ only when you need to normalize formats or settings. Keeping the original gives you a way to create a different playback version later without retrieving the source again.
Make the playlist an intentional selection
Use stable, descriptive filenames and maintain an ordered manifest such as playlists/video.txt. Generate it from approved files rather than a broad wildcard: wildcards can pull in temporary, rejected or duplicate files. Keep retired or deliberately excluded items outside the active selection. If order matters, back up the manifest with your configuration or keep it under version control. These are operational practices, not YouTube rules.

Build and maintain the rotation
- Receive: place each new file in
media/source-video/, preserving the original. - Review: inspect it and decide whether it belongs in the rotation. Keep rejected, retired or otherwise excluded material out of the active playlist selection.
- Prepare: create a copy in
media/stream-ready/only if normalization is useful for your workflow. Test representative audio and motion at the intended output settings; YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream. See its encoder settings guidance. - Update: rebuild the ordered manifest after additions, removals or ordering changes, then review its contents before restarting the encoder.
- Protect credentials: configure the YouTube server URL and stream key in your encoder settings. Do not commit the key to a repository or expose it in a publicly readable file. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Verify: check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, confirm the watch page is accessible, and monitor encoder logs, outbound traffic, disk space and local recording growth.
A community example uses FFmpeg to loop local files and runs the process under systemd with automatic restart. That is one possible design pattern, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service or a YouTube requirement. The example’s exact commands and service settings should not be treated as universal VPS configuration.
Set encoder output for YouTube, not the stored source
Stored files do not all need to use the encoder’s live output bitrate or codec. Choose output settings for the stream, then decide whether to normalize files in advance or have the encoder convert them during playback.

Codec, bitrate and keyframes
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. It specifies constant bitrate encoding and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Its H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 720p60. Those are output recommendations for the specified resolutions and frame rates, not required properties of every file in your library. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings page for the applicable settings.
Choose advance normalization or continuous transcoding
- Normalize copies in advance: this can make the playback library more consistent and avoid re-encoding each file during the stream, at the cost of preparing and storing additional copies.
- Transcode during playback: this gives the encoder flexibility with mixed source formats, but adds compute demand while the VPS is streaming.
- Stream-copy compatible files: copying streams instead of re-encoding avoids the transcoding workload when files are already compatible with the output workflow.
There is no measured performance comparison here that establishes one workflow as best for every operator. Test representative files on your chosen VPS and monitor the actual stream. Both workflows require stable outbound connectivity. YouTube advises leaving 20% bandwidth headroom and checking outbound capacity, accessibility and ongoing audio/video quality; see its streaming tips.

Use RTMPS and safeguard the key
YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. RTMPS is RTMP over SSL; YouTube’s developer guidance specifies a valid RTMPS endpoint and port 443. Keep the stream key private, since anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guidance.
Plan for VPS capacity and continuous operation
There is no responsible one-size-fits-all CPU or RAM figure for this setup. The main distinction is whether the VPS is transcoding or merely stream-copying compatible media: transcoding adds compute demand. Select the target resolution and bitrate, confirm that the server can sustain the workload, leave network headroom, and monitor encoder health and stream quality in operation. Do not infer a server specification from one community configuration.

Storage needs also depend on your own library and recording policy. Keep an eye on the size of originals, prepared copies and local recordings, and remove or rotate files according to a deliberate retention policy rather than waiting for the disk to fill.
Choose a broadcast schedule with replay needs in mind
A continuously running broadcast and a schedule of shorter broadcasts serve different needs. One long stream minimizes interruptions to viewing; scheduled shorter broadcasts can make replay segments easier to manage. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay must be preserved, keep a local recording and verify that the file is being written and growing. Read YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

- Unexpected videos appear in the rotation: the playlist may be generated from a wildcard or overly broad directory. Build it from the approved selection, inspect the manifest and keep temporary or excluded items elsewhere.
- Files play inconsistently: source formats may differ. Normalize playback copies where consistency is needed, and test representative content with the intended output settings before updating the rotation.
- The VPS struggles while streaming: continuous transcoding may be demanding more compute than stream-copying. Check encoder logs and actual server load; consider preparing compatible copies in advance, then test the resulting stream.
- The stream drops or appears unhealthy: inspect encoder and service logs, verify the RTMPS endpoint and key, and check outbound capacity and stream health in Live Control Room. Leave the bandwidth headroom YouTube recommends.
- The stream is live but no full replay appears: streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Preserve required content with a local recording and verify that the recording file is growing.
- The VPS runs out of disk space: check growth in
recordings/as well as source and prepared media. Apply a retention or rotation policy and verify that local archives are valid before removing older copies. - The stream key may have been exposed: treat it as compromised. Replace or reset it using YouTube’s channel live-stream controls, then update the protected encoder configuration and verify the new stream in Live Control Room.
Or let it run in the cloud
