Use a few broad folders or collections for the main places a link belongs, tags for details that cut across those places, and search to retrieve anything you did not file perfectly. Keep capture quick: save a link to an inbox or default folder when you are unsure, then sort it when its purpose is clearer.
Give folders and tags different jobs
A folder or collection is a link’s broad home: for example, Work, Personal, Research, or a current project. Tags describe qualities that can apply in more than one folder, such as how-to, reference, or to-read. Firefox supports bookmark folders and tags, while Raindrop.io uses collections and tags. Choose one main filing pattern—by subject or by active project—rather than building a deep hierarchy that combines many competing schemes. Keep the tag vocabulary short and consistent: choose one spelling and form for each idea so that a search or filter does not split results across near-duplicates.
Set up a simple system
- Create a few broad folders or collections. Start with only the subjects, projects, or workflows you expect to revisit. Add a new one when it solves a real retrieval problem, not just because a link seems unusual.
- Use a small set of cross-cutting tags. Tags are useful when the same kind of link can live in different places—for instance, a
referenceitem might belong in either Work or Research. - Save with as little friction as possible. If the right destination is not obvious, use an inbox or broad default collection. Add a useful title, short note, or one clear tag at capture time only when it will make the link easier to recognize later. - Search before checking every folder. Try a word from the title, URL, subject, or saved-page text if your tool indexes content. Then narrow the results with a tag or another available filter.

Use search as the retrieval backstop
Search is especially useful when you remember what a link was about but not where you filed it. What search can find depends on the tool: Raindrop.io says bookmarks can be searched by name, URL, or content and narrowed with filters such as type, date, and tag. Decide whether browser bookmarks are enough
If you mainly save and revisit links in one browser ecosystem, its built-in bookmarks may be all you need. Mozilla describes Firefox bookmarks as searchable, organizable with folders and tags, and synchronizable across devices. A dedicated bookmark manager is worth considering when your library spans multiple devices or workflows and you want collections, tags, or retrieval features beyond your browser’s tools.
