Microsoft Edge calls bookmarks Favorites. The complete organization workflow is in the Favorites manager: create a small folder hierarchy, choose a folder when saving or moving a favorite, use Sort by name on the Favorites bar page for alphabetical order, and enable Favorites sync in your Edge profile to carry the structure to other signed-in devices.
Use Favorites as the central organizer
Edge’s Favorites manager is the control center for saved websites, bookmarks, and webpages. From one page you can create, rename, and delete folders; edit or remove individual favorites; and change their order. The browser interface uses “Favorites” rather than “bookmarks,” so look for that label in menus and settings.
A useful system separates two decisions that are often confused:
- Where an item belongs: its folder, such as Work, Finance, Travel, or Reference.
- Where it appears within that folder: alphabetical order or a hand-curated priority order.
Keeping those decisions separate prevents a long, mixed Favorites bar. Put broad categories at the top level, place narrower subjects in subfolders, and reserve the bar itself for links you open frequently.

Open the Edge Favorites manager
- Open Microsoft Edge on your desktop.
- Choose Settings and more (the three-dot menu).
- Select Favorites.
- In the Favorites window, choose More options, then Open favorites page.
The Favorites page is where the folder tree and its saved links can be managed together. Menu wording or icon placement can vary with Edge updates, your operating-system language, or an organization’s device policy, but the path remains the documented desktop workflow. The organization and add-favorite instructions apply to Windows 10 and Edge for Mac; mobile Edge has a separate Favorites view and may not expose every desktop command.
Plan a folder structure that stays usable
Start with stable tasks or topics
Choose categories that are unlikely to change every week. Examples include Work, Finance, Travel, and Reference. A folder named for a durable activity remains useful even when individual websites change. Avoid making a folder for every one-off project unless you will revisit it.
Keep the top level small
A short top level makes the Favorites bar easier to scan. Put narrower subjects inside a parent folder—for example, place “Invoices,” “Tax,” and “Banking” under Finance rather than creating many unrelated top-level entries. The goal is not to reproduce every detail of your work; it is to make the next destination obvious.

Use the Favorites bar for high-frequency links. Move occasional or reference-only sites into folders so they remain available without competing with daily destinations. This also gives you a natural place to archive links that are still useful but no longer part of your routine.
Pick names that sort well
Use short, descriptive folder names and consistent wording. “Travel” is easier to recognize than a vague label such as “Stuff.” If you need a predictable alphabetical sequence, apply the same naming style across folders—for example, “Finance,” “Reference,” and “Travel,” rather than mixing verbs, abbreviations, and personal nicknames.

Create, rename, and delete folders
Open the Favorites page before changing the structure. Use its folder controls to create a folder at the appropriate level, then create subfolders only where they clarify a real distinction. A typical arrangement might look like this:
- Work
- Projects
- Tools
- Company services
- Finance
- Banking
- Taxes
- Travel
- Airlines
- Hotels
- Reference
Rename a folder when its purpose changes instead of immediately creating a replacement. Before deleting one, open it and move any favorites you still need. Deleting a folder is a structural cleanup action; do not assume that a link inside it has been preserved elsewhere. If you have duplicate folders, consolidate their contents first, verify the destination, and only then remove the empty duplicate.

Save a new bookmark directly into a folder
- Open the page you want to save.
- Choose Add this page to favorites.
- In the save dialog, edit the favorite’s name if the page title is too long or unclear.
- Choose the destination folder.
- Select Done.
Choosing the destination while saving avoids a second cleanup pass. A concise name should identify either the destination or the task—for example, “Expense portal” is more useful than a generic page title when several links come from the same service. Check the folder field before selecting Done, especially if Edge remembers a recently used destination.
Move an existing favorite into a folder
Use the Favorites page to place existing items in the right folder. Select the favorite, use the manager’s move or folder controls, and choose the destination. If the manager presents an item for editing, confirm both its name and its folder before saving the change.
Process one category at a time rather than dragging thousands of links into a new structure without checking them. When you find two copies of the same destination, open or inspect the entries first. Keep the better name and correct URL, move that copy to the intended folder, and delete the duplicate only after verifying that the surviving item works.

The manager also supports reordering. Use that capability after folders are in place: first decide which items belong together, then decide whether the order inside each group should be alphabetical or based on frequency.
Sort Favorites alphabetically by name
- Open the Favorites page using Settings and more > Favorites > More options > Open favorites page.
- Go to the Favorites bar page or section.
- Right-click an empty area of that page.
- Select Sort by name.
Sort by name is Edge’s documented alphabetical command. It is specifically available from the context menu on the Favorites bar page. If you expect every nested folder to be alphabetized automatically, check each relevant folder or page: the documented command is tied to the Favorites bar page, and Microsoft does not document additional automatic sort keys in this workflow.
Alphabetical order is useful when you know the name of a destination and want a repeatable sequence. It is less useful when your most important links are not the ones whose names begin with A or B. In that case, retain a manual priority order and use folders to keep the remaining links out of the way.
Choose alphabetical or priority ordering

You can combine the approaches: keep the Favorites bar in manual priority order, then use alphabetical order inside a reference-oriented group when the title is the easiest way to find an item. There is no need to choose one policy for every folder.
Rename, edit, and remove stale links
Rename for recognition
Edit a favorite when its displayed title is too vague, duplicated, or longer than necessary. Name it for the action you take or the destination you need. Consistent names also make Sort by name more predictable.

Correct changed addresses
If a site has moved, edit the favorite’s URL in the manager rather than saving a second copy immediately. Test the edited entry before deleting the old one. This preserves a single, understandable link in the folder.
Delete dead and duplicated entries
Remove links that no longer open, repeated copies, and temporary pages you will not revisit. The Favorites manager supports deletion. For a safer cleanup, review a folder, move any survivors to their final destination, and then delete obsolete entries in batches.
Do not confuse deletion with moving
Moving changes the folder assignment; deleting removes the saved item. Verify the destination after every move, particularly when consolidating folders. If a favorite appears to have disappeared, check the other folders and the Favorites bar before saving another copy.

- Sign in to Microsoft Edge with the profile you want to use.
- Open Settings > Profiles.
- Select the profile.
- Open Sync.
- Turn on the Favorites data toggle.
With Favorites synchronization enabled, Edge can make your folders and saved sites available on the other devices signed in to that profile. Sync is profile-specific: confirm that each device uses the same Edge profile, and check the Favorites toggle if an organization appears on one device but not another.
Sync does not replace organization. A poorly structured collection is simply reproduced across devices. Finish the folder cleanup on one device, allow it to synchronize, and then verify the result elsewhere. Managed devices may restrict profile or sync settings, so an unavailable toggle can be a policy issue rather than a problem with the folder structure.

Desktop and mobile differences
The documented steps target Edge desktop on Windows 10 and Edge for Mac. Edge on phones and tablets has its own Favorites views and does not necessarily show the desktop Favorites page, the same context menu, or the same folder controls. Use the desktop manager for major reorganizations, then use sync to make the resulting structure available on supported signed-in devices.
Labels can also vary by language, release, operating-system version, or managed-device configuration. If you do not see an option in exactly the position described, start from the three-dot Settings and more menu and look for Favorites, then open the Favorites page from its More options menu.
Troubleshoot common organization problems
The Favorites page is not visible
Open Settings and more, choose Favorites, and use More options > Open favorites page. The manager is separate from the compact Favorites pop-up, so opening the pop-up alone may not expose all folder controls.
“Sort by name” is missing
Make sure you are on the Favorites bar page and right-click an empty area. The documented command is not described as a general sort menu for every view. If your device is managed or Edge has a different interface version, menu placement may differ.
A favorite is in the wrong place
Return to the Favorites manager, select the item, and change its destination folder. Check the destination before removing any duplicate. If it is not immediately visible, inspect the Favorites bar and each likely parent folder instead of creating another copy.
Folders are not appearing on another device
Confirm that you are signed in to the same Edge profile on both devices, then open Settings > Profiles > Sync and verify that Favorites is enabled. A company-managed policy may control whether sync can be changed.
The structure became too deep
Move frequently used links upward, merge overlapping folders, and keep only meaningful distinctions as subfolders. A small top level and shallow nesting usually make the Favorites bar easier to use than a folder for every individual site.

- Capture: save a new page directly into its final folder and give it a recognizable name.
- Review: periodically inspect each folder for dead, duplicate, or temporary links.
- Consolidate: merge folders that now serve the same purpose and remove empty duplicates.
- Order: apply Sort by name where lookup by title matters; otherwise keep a manual priority sequence.
- Sync: verify the Favorites toggle in the active Edge profile so the structure is available on your other signed-in devices.
This sequence keeps the manager as the source of truth, limits clutter on the Favorites bar, and avoids the common mistake of treating alphabetical order as a substitute for folder design.
