Sort craft supplies by activity, give each group a simple home, and keep only child-approved everyday materials within easy reach. Use shelves, drawers, baskets, or stackable bins that fit storage you already have; secure hazardous supplies and stabilize any tall furniture.
Start by choosing what stays in the everyday craft area
Take everything out and remove dried-out markers, broken tools, duplicate supplies, and materials your child no longer uses. Keep a small active selection near the place where crafts happen. Store occasional project materials elsewhere so the daily setup stays manageable.
Before buying containers or furniture, measure the shelf, closet, cabinet, or under-bed clearance you plan to use. A container is useful only if it fits the space, can be reached safely, and is easy to put back.

Make categories around what your child uses together: drawing, painting, paper, and small embellishments are practical starting points. IKEA’s kids’ room storage guide recommends organizing by category rather than by the size of the storage unit. Keep the number of categories small enough for a child to remember.

- Drawing: Put crayons, pencils, and approved markers in a cup or shallow bin.
- Painting: Keep paints and brushes together, with any items that need adult help stored accordingly.
- Paper: Store pads and larger sheets flat or in a file that prevents bending.
- Small pieces: Use a divided, closed organizer for items such as beads, subject to age and supervision.
Give each group a consistent home and label it. A picture label can help a child who is not yet reading. If loose pieces or tools could be unsafe for your child, the container should not be accessible to them.
Use the storage you already have before adding furniture
A low cabinet, existing shelf, or closet can often hold the active craft kit without adding floor clutter. Baskets and stackable boxes are among the affordable storage options named in New Zealand Ministry of Education home-based early-learning storage guidance. Add them only where the shelf or unit can support them safely.

When existing storage is not enough, consider a narrow shelf, modular drawers, or an under-bed container if the room’s layout and clearances allow it. IKEA describes vertical and under-bed storage as ways to use space in children’s rooms. Check dimensions and access in your own room; these suggestions do not establish that a particular unit will fit or be stable.

For a room without a permanent craft surface, keep the everyday supplies in a handled basket or lidded caddy. Carry it to the table for an activity and return it to its shelf or closet afterward.

Make appropriate supplies accessible and restricted supplies secure
Open shelves can let children choose materials independently. New Zealand Ministry of Education centre-based early-learning guidance describes open shelving for accessible materials, with cupboards or drawers for equipment rotated into use. It also identifies lockable storage as appropriate for hazardous or unsuitable items. For a home setup, apply the same distinction: put only materials your child may use independently within reach, and keep sharp, hazardous, or adult-supervised supplies secured or otherwise inaccessible.
The American Academy of Pediatrics’ HealthyChildren.org advises avoiding art materials labeled “Keep Out of Reach of Children” or “Not for Use by Children,” as well as products carrying hazard terms such as “Poison,” “Danger,” “Warning,” or “Caution.” It recommends supervision and proper labeling and storage after use. The guidance also says an ACMI AP (Approved Product) seal is a better choice than a Cautionary Label, but does not guarantee complete safety. Keep shelves and containers safe to use
Do not stack bins or boxes high, and do not overfill cupboards. New Zealand Ministry of Education storage guidance warns against high stacks and over-stacked cupboards to reduce falling-item risks and keep materials accessible.
If you use a tall storage unit, anchor it according to the furniture maker’s instructions and use a wall fastener suited to both the wall and the unit. Health Canada’s furniture tip-over guidance, dated 2025-01-24, advises anchoring furniture, placing heavier items in lower drawers, and supervising children around furniture. Keep heavier craft supplies low, and avoid placing tempting items on top of furniture where a child might climb to reach them.

Choose a setup that fits your room and routine
Compare potential storage by the details that affect your household rather than by appearance alone:
- Footprint: Can it use an existing shelf, closet, door, or under-bed area without adding floor clutter?
- Access: Can your child reach and return approved supplies without pulling down a heavy container?
- Visibility: Are categories easy to see, label, and retrieve? Are the compartments the right size for the materials?
- Flexibility: Can bins or shelves be rearranged when projects and interests change?
- Safety: Can furniture be anchored, are stacks stable, and are restricted supplies out of reach?
There is no universally best layout established for every small room. The right arrangement depends on the available footprint, the child’s age and abilities, and which materials require adult supervision.
