For a conventional single-output Twitch stream, start with CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate, resolution, and frame rate your computer and connection can sustain together. Twitch’s example profiles are starting points—not guarantees. Test with the game and workload you intend to stream, and favor a stable stream over a higher-quality setting that drops frames.
Start with a stable Twitch baseline
In OBS, open Settings → Output and set Output Mode to Advanced if you need access to the streaming encoder options. Under the streaming output settings, use constant bitrate (CBR) and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Twitch recommends CBR because variable bitrate can swing between quiet and high-action moments, making delivery less predictable.
Twitch lists these example profiles for conventional streaming:
| Output profile | Twitch-listed bitrate | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6000 kbps | Use only if the connection and encoder sustain it without dropped frames. |
| 720p at 60 fps | 4500 kbps | A lower-resolution option for motion-heavy content when 1080p60 is not stable. |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3000 kbps | A lighter option when bandwidth or system capacity is limited. |
These are Twitch recommendations; they do not guarantee that a particular account, home connection, or current Twitch workflow can sustain the listed settings. Twitch’s guidance is explicit: stable delivery matters more than pushing quality until frames drop or the connection is at its limit.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose bitrate, resolution, and frame rate together
Estimate a sustainable bitrate
OBS’s 2024 troubleshooting guidance suggests starting around 75% of your total upload speed when diagnosing dropped frames. Treat that as a troubleshooting heuristic, not a promise: leave headroom for other devices and traffic, and remember that a speed test does not show whether the route to Twitch’s ingest server is stable. If you have connection trouble, reduce video bitrate rather than assuming a nominal speed-test result will hold during a stream.
Set the output resolution
In OBS, Settings → Video contains Base (Canvas) Resolution and Output (Scaled) Resolution. The canvas is the workspace where OBS arranges sources, often matching your monitor or game resolution. The output resolution is the size of the video sent to viewers; for example, you can work on a 1080p canvas and output at 720p.

Choose an FPS your system can maintain
Higher resolution and frame rate require more bandwidth and encoding work. Sixty frames per second can suit fast motion, but OBS warns that it can be taxing. If the stream is not smooth, test 30 fps, a lower output resolution, or both. There is no universally best output: the right choice depends on the content, connection, and hardware.
Select an encoder for your computer
OBS offers software encoding such as x264 and, where supported, hardware encoders that move work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. OBS says modern hardware encoders generally provide good quality with minimal performance impact, though older generations can produce lower image quality than x264 at the same bitrate.

If you use x264
Twitch notes that x264 can use substantial CPU resources and suggests starting with the veryfast preset, then experimenting. Be cautious with heavier presets: Twitch says presets above Faster require CPUs with six or more cores.
If you use a hardware encoder
Try the hardware encoder available on your system and check the stream while your game or other content is running. Encoder results vary by hardware generation and workload; the reviewed official guidance does not establish a universally best encoder or preset for every computer.

Understand Twitch’s viewer-quality options
Twitch transcoding lets viewers choose from different quality levels, but access is tiered: Partners are guaranteed full access, Affiliates receive it as available with priority, and other streamers receive it as available. A consistent keyframe interval helps quality options transition smoothly, but do not assume every viewer can select alternate resolutions on every stream.
Twitch’s Enhanced Broadcasting is a separate path that provides automatic stream configuration and multiple client-side encodes. Twitch says Enhanced Broadcasting is required for Dual Format Streaming and its 2K workflow. If you use those features or are eligible for Enhanced Broadcasting, conventional single-output settings may not describe your full setup; follow Twitch’s current Enhanced Broadcasting setup steps. A complete OBS-version and operating-system compatibility matrix is not established in the reviewed documentation, so check Twitch’s current instructions for your setup.

Test and troubleshoot before relying on a profile
- Run a private test or otherwise test before going live. OBS recommends checking that the stream runs smoothly. Test under the same game, scene, and workload you expect to use.
- If OBS reports dropped frames, investigate the connection first. Dropped frames commonly indicate that the connection to the ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up; they do not by themselves prove the encoder is at fault.
- Lower bitrate and try another Twitch server. OBS recommends reducing video bitrate when the connection cannot sustain it and testing a different Twitch server. On Windows, OBS points to TwitchTest as a way to find a server with a good Quality score.
- If the network is stable but performance still suffers, reduce workload. Try a lower output resolution or frame rate, review the encoder choice, and check the load from the game and other running applications.
- Consider dynamic bitrate only as a mitigation. OBS says dynamically changing bitrate can help manage congestion, but it does not fix the underlying connection problem and may reduce quality.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, rather than a live camera or gameplay feed to Twitch, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month.
