Make a web application feel faster by measuring real-user delays first, locating the slow segment of the browser-to-origin path, then changing only that segment. Start with field Core Web Vitals and request timings; investigate DNS, redirects, network distance, server work, cache eligibility and transferred bytes; apply the smallest safe fix; and measure again. A CDN, compression or a newer protocol can help, but none is an automatic cure.
Start with measurements, not a CDN
Collect both production (field) data and controlled lab runs. Field data shows what people actually experience across devices, networks and locations; lab runs let you reproduce a page and isolate a request or rendering change. Keep the two datasets separate: a good lab score cannot substitute for real-user performance.
Track the Core Web Vitals
Google’s recommended “good” thresholds are evaluated at the 75th percentile, separately for mobile and desktop:
| Metric | What it indicates | Good threshold |
|---|---|---|
| LCP | Loading performance: when the main content becomes visible | 2.5 seconds or less |
| INP | Interaction responsiveness | 200 milliseconds or less |
| CLS | Visual stability | 0.1 or less |
These are guidance values, not a promise that every visitor will perceive the same speed. Segment reports by page type, geography, connection and device class so a fast desktop population does not hide a slow mobile one.

Add request-level timing
Record time to first byte (TTFB), DNS, connection and TLS time, redirects, download duration, response size, cache status and resource timing. TTFB is not merely application “server time”: it can include DNS lookup, network round trips, redirects and server processing. A waterfall trace helps identify which portion dominates.
Trace the slow request path
For an initially slow document, follow the path in order rather than changing several layers at once.
- Redirects: remove unnecessary HTTP-to-HTTPS, host or locale hops. Keep one canonical redirect where possible.
- DNS: verify that the resolver and authoritative setup respond reliably for users in your important regions.
- Network distance: compare round-trip latency from representative user locations to the origin. A distant origin adds delay before application work can begin.
- Application work: profile request handlers, downstream APIs, database calls, queue waits and template generation. Set timeouts and avoid serial calls that can run concurrently.
- Compute and contention: check CPU, memory, connection pools and autoscaling. Saturation can make otherwise small requests queue.
Chrome’s performance guidance notes that an edge cache can reduce network latency when content is cacheable; it cannot make expensive uncached application work disappear. If the trace shows database or application time dominating TTFB, fix that path before adding edge infrastructure.
Use edge delivery and caching safely
When a CDN helps
A content delivery network (CDN) places cacheable responses near users and can reduce trips to the origin. It is most useful when visitors are geographically distant from the origin or when repeated requests for the same public assets create avoidable origin load. Benefits depend on geography, eligibility, hit rate and configuration.

Separate public assets from personalized responses
Cache correctness is a security decision. Cloudflare documents images, CSS and JavaScript as cached by default in its setup, while dynamic HTML is generally not cached by default. Those are Cloudflare defaults, not a universal rule for every CDN.

Before caching HTML or API responses, verify that cookies, Authorization headers, query strings and every personalization or locale variant are represented in the cache key. Do not cache private account pages, user-specific API data or sensitive responses as if they were public. Inspect response headers and test with two different users.
Make long-lived assets safely immutable
Give compiled files content-hashed names such as app.4f83c1.js, then serve them with a long freshness lifetime. A changed file gets a new URL, so clients do not need a risky global purge. For unversioned assets, use deliberate invalidation and verify propagation before deploying dependent HTML.
Reduce bytes before changing protocols
Remove and right-size resources
- Delete unused JavaScript, CSS, fonts and third-party tags.
- Serve images at the largest displayed size, using modern formats where your browser support policy permits.
- Lazy-load below-the-fold media, while ensuring the main LCP image is discoverable early.
- Use responsive image variants so a phone does not download a desktop-sized file.
Measure transferred bytes and download time for the critical path. A protocol upgrade cannot compensate for shipping unnecessary megabytes.

Compression reduces transfer size for eligible text responses. Confirm behavior at both origin and CDN: inspect the browser’s request headers, response Content-Encoding, content type, status and size. Cloudflare documents Gzip, Brotli and Zstandard delivery subject to plan, client negotiation, rules, content type, response status and minimum-size conditions. Those details are Cloudflare-specific; other providers expose different controls.
Do not compress already-compressed formats such as most JPEG, WebP, AVIF, video or archive files. Ensure compressed responses vary correctly when negotiation headers are involved, and monitor CPU cost if compression is performed at the origin.

Validate each change
- Capture a baseline for the same URL set, device classes and geographic cohorts.
- Change one material variable, such as an asset cache rule or a query made parallel.
- Repeat lab runs under the same test conditions and wait for enough field data to compare the 75th percentile.
- Check TTFB, cache status and hit rate, transferred bytes, error rates and origin load alongside LCP, INP and CLS.
- Record operational cost and invalidation complexity. Roll back if correctness, privacy or reliability worsens.
A higher cache-hit ratio is useful only when the cached response is current and correct. Monitor stale content, authorization leaks, cache misses caused by fragmented keys and purge failures.
Common failures and fixes
“The CDN made the page no faster”
Check whether the slow response is dynamic and bypasses cache, whether users are routed to a distant point of presence, and whether TTFB is dominated by origin computation. Cache public static assets first and profile uncached HTML separately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“Users see old CSS or JavaScript”
Use content-hashed filenames or purge the exact cache keys after deployment. Confirm that HTML references the new filenames and that an intermediate proxy is not retaining an unexpected response.
“A private response appeared for another user”
Immediately disable caching for the affected route, purge stored objects, and audit cache keys for cookies, Authorization and query parameters. Add automated tests that request the same URL as two identities.
“Compression is missing”
Check whether the client advertised a supported encoding, whether the response is compressible and above the provider’s minimum size, and whether an origin or CDN rule disables it. Inspect the final response rather than assuming a dashboard setting took effect.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
“TTFB is high but the server seems idle”
Break TTFB into DNS, connection, TLS, redirects and waiting time. The delay may be geographic or in a proxy hop rather than in application code.
“Lab results improved, field data did not”
Compare the affected cohort, device mix and network conditions. Field metrics need time and sufficient samples; inspect mobile separately and verify that the change reached the production path users actually load.
Capture repeatable evidence without browser setup
For audits, release checks or visual regression, you can use a headless browser yourself: launch a pinned browser version, set the target viewport and network profile, wait for the intended readiness condition, capture a trace and screenshot, then store the URL, commit, device and timings with the artifact. Test consent dialogs, authentication and lazy content explicitly; otherwise your “page” may be a popup or an incomplete shell.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing state.
One request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
It also offers full-page and selector captures, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture for 100 URLs per call, usage data and an OpenAPI specification. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

FAQ
Should I optimize TTFB or LCP first?
Use the trace and field data. If the main content waits on a slow initial response, TTFB is a useful starting point; if the response is quick but the LCP resource is large or late, prioritize discovery and transfer of that resource.
Is caching dynamic HTML always unsafe?
No, but it requires explicit design for identity, cookies, authorization, query parameters, freshness and invalidation. Public, identical HTML is a different case from personalized or sensitive HTML.
How often should performance be measured?
Run automated lab checks on every material release and monitor field metrics continuously enough to detect regressions in your main page and user cohorts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a CDN fix a slow database query?
No. A CDN can serve an eligible cached response closer to the user, but an uncached request still waits for application and database work at the origin.
Are Core Web Vitals pass/fail guarantees?
No. LCP, INP and CLS thresholds are recommended 75th-percentile targets; individual experiences vary by device, network and interaction.
