Start by removing images that do not help the page, then make each remaining image fit its actual display size and role. Use an appropriate format, compress and inspect the result, and serve responsive variants so phones do not download desktop-sized files. For loading problems, identify the page’s largest contentful paint (LCP) element before changing loading priority: smaller files help only when image transfer is the bottleneck.
1. Find the images that matter on the page
Begin with the rendered page, not an export folder. Identify prominent images, note how large they appear in the layout, and compare those dimensions with each file’s intrinsic pixel dimensions. A large image scaled down with CSS still transfers its full file; it can consume bandwidth without adding visible detail.
Remove an image if it is unnecessary. For images you keep, generate candidates near the widths at which the design displays them. Consider higher-density screens, but do not send the largest original to every device. Google web.dev notes that serving desktop-sized images to mobile devices can use 2–4 times more data than needed; that is a conditional comparison, not a guaranteed saving for every page.
Set explicit width and height attributes on image elements. They let the browser reserve space before the image loads and help avoid layout movement.

2. Choose a format for the image content
There is no universally best format. Compare the output at the image’s actual rendered size and a quality level that suits its purpose; converting an already optimized source can make it larger.

3. Compress, then inspect the result
Lossy compression discards image information to reduce bytes. It is often useful for detailed photos, but can produce artifacts, especially around text, high-contrast edges, and flat-color areas. Lossless compression preserves image data while reducing encoding overhead; consider it when fidelity matters.

- Choose representative images from the page, including the most detailed photograph and any asset with fine text or sharp edges.
- Export a few compression levels or format options for each representative image.
- Compare file size and visual quality at the image’s actual display size, not only zoomed in or in a thumbnail.
- Inspect text, edges, gradients, transparency, and flat colors. Keep the smaller version only if its visible quality is acceptable.
- Retain the original when a conversion makes the file larger or visibly worse.
Google web.dev names Squoosh and ImageOptim as options in its image-performance guidance; that guidance does not establish one current best tool or a compression setting that works for every image. Its practical recommendation is to experiment with compression levels until image quality and file size reach an acceptable compromise.
4. Serve responsive image candidates
Use srcset and sizes when an image has width variants for different layouts. The browser can select a candidate suited to the rendered slot and device rather than downloading one oversized file. Use <picture> when you need art direction—different crops for different layouts—or format alternatives with a fallback.

Adjust both to match the actual page and the variants you generate. The width and height attributes should reflect the image’s intrinsic dimensions so the browser can reserve the correct aspect ratio.
5. Load images according to when they are needed
Lazy-load images below the fold when they can wait until they approach the viewport. Do not lazy-load an above-the-fold hero image that is likely to be the LCP element: delaying its discovery can make the page’s main visible content arrive later.

For an important image, first check whether the browser discovers it early. A fetch-priority hint or preload may help when the image is genuinely important and discovered late, but prioritizing every image competes with scripts, fonts, and other work. Use these hints selectively, based on a performance trace rather than assumption.

LCP measures when the largest image or text block in the viewport is rendered. Google web.dev guidance, last updated March 31, 2025, says sites should aim for an LCP of 2.5 seconds or less for at least 75% of page visits. This is a target for page visits, not a guarantee for every visit.

- Use PageSpeed Insights, browser developer tools, or a performance trace to identify the LCP element on the page.
- Determine whether the LCP element is an image and whether its URL is discovered early.
- Separate image resource loading time from resource discovery delay, connection setup, and render delay.
- Choose a fix for the measured bottleneck. If image transfer is slow, reduce bytes or serve a better-sized candidate. If discovery is late, review how the image is referenced and whether a selective priority hint is appropriate. If render delay dominates, compressing the image alone will not address the main delay.
7. Decide whether an image CDN fits your workflow
An image CDN can transform, optimize, and deliver variants by dimensions, pixel density, format, and compression. It may reduce manual image processing, but it adds a service and migration decisions. Compare it with a build-time image pipeline on the dimensions that affect your project:
- Automation: Does the workflow generate the sizes and formats your layouts need?
- Cost and support: Check current pricing, documentation, and support for the provider and plan you would actually use.
- Migration effort: Account for changing image URLs, templates, and any existing build or publishing process.
- Delivery and LCP: Check whether using another origin adds connection setup, and whether the browser can discover the LCP image early.
No provider is established as universally best by the guidance cited here. Choose based on your measured needs and the costs and operational work of your own site.
