Optimize the actual <img> inside your component: provide suitable srcset and sizes, set intrinsic dimensions to reserve space, lazy-load images that are genuinely below the fold, and use high fetch priority only for a confirmed critical image. Shadow DOM does not change how the browser’s native image-loading controls work; it changes where the image markup lives and when the browser can discover it.
Start with the image element
Put image attributes on the <img>, not just on the custom-element host. For an internal image that is below the fold, a responsive pattern looks like this:
<img
src="/images/card-800.jpg"
srcset="/images/card-400.jpg 400w, /images/card-800.jpg 800w, /images/card-1200.jpg 1200w"
sizes="(max-width: 40rem) 100vw, 40rem"
width="1200"
height="800"
alt="A descriptive image"
loading="eager"
>
The width and height should reflect the image’s actual intrinsic dimensions and aspect ratio. The example uses a 3:2 image. Its sizes value describes the intended rendered width: up to the viewport width at narrow sizes, and 40rem otherwise. Adapt that expression to the component’s real layout rather than copying it blindly.
For a visible hero image, omit loading="lazy". If measurement confirms that image is the page’s Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) element, consider adding fetchpriority="high" to that <img>. It is a relative priority hint, not a guarantee of a faster load; raising one request’s priority can affect competing scripts, fonts, and other resources.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose responsive sources that fit the rendered size
srcset supplies candidate files, while sizes tells the browser how wide the image is expected to render at different viewport conditions. The browser uses that information, along with device conditions, to choose a candidate. Generate candidates that correspond to the widths the component actually uses; a set of files much larger than its display sizes can still waste bandwidth.
Serving a desktop-sized image to a mobile device can use 2–4 times more data than needed, according to web.dev’s general example. The page does not state a publication year for that figure, and it is not a guaranteed saving for a particular site. Measure your own image delivery before promising a byte reduction.

Use <picture> when the image needs art direction—different crops or compositions at different conditions—or format selection. It complements rather than replaces the need to set dimensions and loading behavior on the image element.
Reserve space to prevent image-driven layout shifts
Set both width and height on the image using its intrinsic aspect ratio. The browser can use those values to calculate the space the image needs before its file arrives. In the component’s CSS, keep it responsive without discarding that ratio:

img {
max-width: 100%;
height: auto;
}
A CSS width alone does not give the browser enough advance information to infer the image’s height. If a component’s image has a different crop or ratio at some breakpoint, make sure the layout reserves the appropriate ratio for that presentation too.
Lazy-load only images that are truly offscreen
Use native loading="lazy" for images expected to appear below the fold. The browser waits until it can determine layout and proximity to the viewport before fetching a lazy image. That delay is undesirable for an image likely to be visible immediately, especially a hero or LCP image. Adding fetchpriority="high" does not remove the delay caused by lazy loading.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Below the fold: use
loading="lazy". - Likely visible when the page opens: do not lazy-load it.
- Confirmed LCP image: consider
fetchpriority="high"on the image request element, then measure the effect.
Do not mark every image high priority. Prioritization is relative, so indiscriminate use can compete with other important requests.

Internal shadow-tree images
An image in a component’s shadow tree is still an ordinary image for loading purposes. Put its alt, dimensions, source candidates, loading, and priority attributes on its internal <img>. Put sizing rules such as max-width: 100%; height: auto in the component’s encapsulated styles.

Slotted images
If the component accepts an image through a slot, the consumer owns the light-DOM <img> and its attributes unless your API clearly establishes another arrangement. A slot does not automatically add dimensions, responsive candidates, or a loading policy. Document those responsibilities so users of the component can provide them.
Images created by JavaScript
If JavaScript constructs an image after custom-element initialization, the browser cannot discover that image from the initial document markup. For a critical image, avoid relying solely on late construction when the architecture allows the markup to be available earlier. Declarative Shadow DOM is an HTML form of shadow-tree markup that can support server-rendered Web Components, but its implementation and browser support must be checked against your target audience. It does not guarantee earlier fetching in every framework or browser.
Diagnose common image problems
- The image downloads too late or hurts LCP: Check whether it is likely visible on initial load and accidentally has
loading="lazy". If profiling identifies it as LCP, consider high fetch priority on the<img>itself and verify the result in a real page measurement. - The page jumps when an image appears: Provide accurate intrinsic
widthandheightso space can be reserved, and preserve the ratio with responsive CSS. - Mobile users receive unnecessarily large files: Provide candidates at useful widths in
srcsetand makesizesdescribe the component’s actual rendered width. - A slotted image ignores the component’s loading assumptions: Check the consumer’s light-DOM markup. The slot does not supply the image’s attributes automatically.
- A shadow-tree image is not styled as expected: Check the component’s encapsulated stylesheet; host-page styles do not substitute for the component’s internal sizing rules.
- A critical image appears only after a delay: Determine whether client-side component construction is delaying discovery. Consider initial HTML or server-rendered declarative shadow markup where your implementation and target support matrix allow it.
