Optimize in this order: size the image for its largest real display slot, choose a format that fits its content, select lossy or lossless compression deliberately, then inspect the rendered result. Deliver responsive candidates with srcset and sizes so a phone does not download a desktop-sized file. There is no single format or quality setting that is best for every image.

1. Start with the image’s display dimensions

The largest performance mistake is uploading a source that is far larger than the page ever displays. A 4,000-pixel photograph used in a 900-pixel content column carries unnecessary decode and transfer cost. First measure the largest rendered width and height the design needs, including high-density screens where appropriate. Export a practical candidate at that size rather than relying on CSS to shrink an oversized original.

Measure the real slot

  • Check the image’s rendered dimensions in browser developer tools at the widest supported layout.
  • Account for layout changes: a card may be 320 pixels wide on a phone and 720 pixels in a two-column desktop layout.
  • Keep the aspect ratio unless the design intentionally uses a crop; stretching an image damages perceived quality even when the file is small.
  • Do not confuse CSS display size with intrinsic dimensions. CSS controls layout, but the browser still has to download and decode the selected resource.

Create responsive candidates

For a fluid image, export several widths around the sizes your layout actually uses, such as 480, 768, 1200 and 1600 pixels. Then let the browser choose:

<img
  src="hero-1200.jpg"
  srcset="hero-480.jpg 480w, hero-768.jpg 768w, hero-1200.jpg 1200w, hero-1600.jpg 1600w"
  sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, (max-width: 1100px) 70vw, 1200px"
  width="1200"
  height="800"
  alt="Mountain trail at sunrise"
>

srcset lists candidates and their intrinsic widths. sizes describes the expected layout slot, allowing the browser to account for viewport width and device pixel ratio before downloading. The width and height attributes preserve the aspect ratio and help reserve space while the image loads. See the MDN responsive images guide for the selection model.

2. Match the format to the content

Format choice is a trade-off among bytes, visual fidelity, transparency, animation, sharp edges and browser support. Compare files at similar perceived quality rather than assuming a newer format always wins.

Format Best fit Important trade-offs
JPEG Photographs and other continuous-tone images Widely supported and lossy; can show blocking or ringing around text and hard edges.
WebP Photos, illustrations and many general-purpose web images Supports lossy and lossless compression and transparency; verify support requirements for your audience.
AVIF Images where very small files justify a newer encoding workflow Supports lossy and lossless compression and transparency; encoding time, decoding behavior and browser support must fit your stack.
PNG Lossless screenshots, diagrams, line art and images needing exact pixels or alpha transparency Often much larger than a photographic JPEG, WebP or AVIF.
SVG Logos, icons and other vector artwork Scales cleanly; minify and compress the SVG, and avoid using it for complex photographic content.

This matches the format characteristics documented by MDN’s image file type guide. Transparency, animation and text embedded in an image can change the best answer.

Offer modern formats with a fallback

Use <picture> when you want format negotiation or a different crop (art direction), and retain a normal <img> fallback:

<picture>
  <source type="image/avif" srcset="hero-768.avif 768w, hero-1200.avif 1200w" sizes="100vw">
  <source type="image/webp" srcset="hero-768.webp 768w, hero-1200.webp 1200w" sizes="100vw">
  <img src="hero-1200.jpg" srcset="hero-768.jpg 768w, hero-1200.jpg 1200w" sizes="100vw" width="1200" height="800" alt="Mountain trail at sunrise">
</picture>

Use a separate source with a different composition when a wide desktop crop would make a portrait subject too small on mobile. Confirm current browser support for the countries, devices and embedded browsers you serve; support changes over time.

3. Choose lossy or lossless compression intentionally

When lossy is appropriate

Lossy encoding removes image information to reduce bytes and is usually effective for photographs, gradients and textured scenes. As quality decreases, inspect skies, faces, foliage and fine patterns for banding, mosquito noise and block artifacts. A small numerical quality value is not portable between encoders, so compare the actual output.

When lossless is safer

Lossless compression preserves the source pixels and is better for screenshots, diagrams, UI captures, line art, flat colors and images containing small high-contrast text. Lossless does not mean small: a detailed screenshot may still be heavy, so dimensions and palette choices remain important.

As the web.dev image-performance guidance states, “When compressing, there isn’t a universal setting suitable for all cases.”

4. Test quality at the size visitors see

  1. Choose representative assets: a photo, a screenshot with text, a transparent graphic and any difficult image type in your library.
  2. Export each at several dimensions, formats and quality settings.
  3. Record byte size and visually compare versions side by side at the actual CSS display size.
  4. Zoom in to inspect edges, small text, skin tones, gradients and transparency boundaries.
  5. Keep the smallest file that meets your visual standard, then repeat the check on a real phone and a slower connection.

Do not promise a fixed percentage reduction. Results depend on source material, dimensions, format, encoder and quality choice. A file that looks acceptable in an editor at 400% may look poor in a 320-pixel card, while a barely visible artifact at full zoom may be irrelevant at the rendered size.

5. Build a reliable responsive-image workflow

For editorial uploads

  • Keep an original outside the delivery directory so you can regenerate candidates when the design changes.
  • Generate named width variants and preserve metadata only when it serves a real purpose; remove unnecessary metadata when privacy or byte size matters.
  • Set explicit dimensions or an aspect-ratio box to prevent layout shifts.
  • Use descriptive, stable filenames and meaningful alternative text. Alt text is an accessibility description, not a compression technique.

For CSS backgrounds

Background images do not use an img element’s srcset. Use responsive CSS image functions or media queries, and ensure the chosen candidate matches the element’s largest rendered size. If an image conveys information, prefer an img with alt text instead of a purely decorative background.

For below-the-fold images

Lazy loading can defer downloads that are not near the viewport, but do not lazily load the primary above-the-fold image by default. Reserve its layout space and prioritize it when it is the main visual content. Measure the effect in your own page rather than applying a blanket rule.

6. Automation, privacy and cost decisions

For a handful of images, a local command-line or GUI export is often simplest. A build step or image service becomes useful when a CMS receives thousands of assets, when every upload needs the same variants, or when formats must be negotiated automatically. Compare output quality, responsive-variant generation, publishing integration, processing limits, privacy requirements and total cost. A hosted service is not automatically cheaper than processing on your own infrastructure.

7. Troubleshooting common failures

The browser still downloads a huge file

Inspect the selected resource in developer tools. Check that srcset width descriptors are correct, that sizes matches the real slot, and that a CSS rule or preload is not forcing the largest candidate. A missing or inaccurate sizes value can make the browser choose a needlessly large file.

Text in a screenshot looks smeared

Switch from lossy to lossless, raise the encoded quality, or use PNG/WebP lossless for that asset. Also verify that the source is not being resized to a non-integer display scale.

Transparency becomes a solid background

Use a format and encoder that preserve alpha, and check the fallback in the target browsers. JPEG cannot carry transparency; provide a composited fallback or use WebP, AVIF or PNG where supported.

A modern format fails for some visitors

Retain a valid <img> fallback inside <picture>, test the actual browser matrix and avoid assuming that desktop support covers in-app browsers, older devices or embedded webviews.

Images look soft on high-density screens

Provide a candidate with enough intrinsic pixels for the largest likely device-pixel ratio, but do not send that candidate to every phone. Correct srcset/sizes selection balances sharpness and transfer size.

8. Capture optimized pages for review or documentation

When you need a reproducible visual check of a page after changing image formats, a screenshot API can capture the rendered result at defined viewports. ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try: it removes consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots.

Or skip the browser setup

After you have implemented the responsive HTML, capture a page with one request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options. The API can return PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF and includes controls for full-page capture, lazy-loaded images, CSS selectors, viewport and device presets, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, waiting for selectors or network idle, blocked requests, headers, cookies, user agents, geolocation, caching and signed links. You can also use its MCP server with Claude, Cursor or another MCP client through take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf.

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card, Starter at $5 for 3,000, Growth at $15 for 15,000, Pro at $39 for 60,000, Scale at $99 for 250,000 and Business at $249 for 1,000,000; yearly billing gives two months free and every feature is included on every plan. 9. A practical pre-publish checklist

  • Does every image have dimensions appropriate to its largest rendered slot?
  • Are responsive candidates and an accurate sizes description present?
  • Does the format suit photography, transparency, animation, text or vector geometry?
  • Was lossy versus lossless chosen per asset rather than globally?
  • Were representative files inspected at actual display size on a phone and desktop?
  • Is there a working fallback for the audience’s browsers?
  • Are above-the-fold images prioritized without causing layout shift?
  • Were privacy, automation cost and processing limits considered?

Frequently Asked Questions

Should every website image use AVIF?

No. AVIF is one option. Content, transparency, encoding workflow and browser support determine whether it is appropriate; WebP, JPEG, PNG or SVG may be better for a particular asset.

Is resizing more important than compression?

They solve different problems, but dimensions come first: an oversized image wastes bytes even when highly compressed. Then compare formats and compression settings at the required visual quality.

What is the difference between srcset and picture?

Use srcset and sizes for resolution candidates of the same image. Use picture when you need alternate formats or art direction, while keeping an img fallback.
