Build a useful baseline before changing the site
A news site is not one page. Its homepage, section pages, article templates, galleries, and embedded-video stories can behave differently, especially on phones. Start by choosing a small, repeatable sample that represents those experiences. This sampling plan is a practical newsroom workflow, not a Google-prescribed list.
Choose representative URLs
- The homepage, including its main story modules.
- A section or topic landing page with the usual mix of headlines and imagery.
- At least two article pages using the templates readers encounter most often.
- An article with a large lead image, video, or other embedded media, if your site publishes those formats.
Use stable URLs where possible. Record which template each URL represents so a later comparison does not accidentally compare different page types. Include pages with ad placements and consent interfaces if those are part of the ordinary reader experience; removing them from a test may make the result less representative.
Record the conditions
For every baseline, note the URL, date, page template, mobile or desktop mode, viewport where applicable, and any relevant page state. Keep a simple log so someone else can repeat the check. A screenshot is easier to interpret when its context is visible in the caption rather than left to memory.

Use the right evidence for the right question
PageSpeed Insights, Search Console, and Lighthouse overlap, but they do not answer precisely the same question. Google’s News Initiative describes PageSpeed Insights as providing mobile and desktop reports and Search Console as showing performance based on audience use. A Lighthouse score from one run is not a stable description of every reader’s experience. Lab conditions can vary, and lab results do not necessarily move in step with field data. Treat a lab run as diagnostic evidence; use audience-based reports to understand the broader reader picture when that data is available.
Prioritize the Core Web Vitals that matter to readers
Google defines Core Web Vitals around real-world loading performance, interactivity, and visual stability. Its current named metrics are Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Interaction to Next Paint (INP), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). Google’s stated “good” thresholds are LCP at or below 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds, and CLS under 0.1. Consult Google Search Central’s Core Web Vitals documentation for the current definitions and guidance.
- LCP — loading: This metric concerns when the largest content element in the viewport is rendered. On a story page, inspect the lead image, headline, and other prominent content; a screenshot can show what appeared, but it cannot establish the LCP value.
- INP — responsiveness: This reflects responsiveness to user interactions. Check real controls such as navigation, menus, article tools, and interactive embeds. A static image cannot show whether a tap or click responded promptly.
- CLS — visual stability: This measures unexpected layout movement. Before-and-after captures can help communicate shifts in ad slots, images, headlines, or embeds, but a pair of still images is not itself a CLS measurement.
These thresholds are evaluation targets, not guarantees that a page will rank, retain visitors, or qualify for Google News. Google describes page experience as one aspect of its systems, and Google News content policies still apply to eligibility. See Google’s page-experience guidance.

Turn a diagnosis into a controlled improvement
- Run the baseline: In PageSpeed Insights, enter a chosen URL and inspect its mobile and desktop reports. Review field information if available separately from the lab diagnostics and suggested opportunities.
- Check page groups: In Search Console, open the Core Web Vitals report and review how the site’s page groups appear in audience-based data. Use this to see whether an issue appears broader than one URL.
- Investigate in the lab: Use Lighthouse or the PageSpeed Insights diagnostics to explore likely causes. Treat findings as leads for the developer responsible for the site, not as proof that every reader encounters the same condition.
- Choose one coherent change: Examples might include addressing a specific layout shift or investigating a prominent image’s loading behavior. Agree on the change and affected template with the developer; avoid bundling unrelated changes when you need to know what caused a difference.
- Deploy, then repeat: Re-run the same URLs in the same device modes and under comparable conditions. Compare the new lab evidence with the baseline, then watch field reports as real-user data becomes available.
- Capture the visual comparison: Capture before and after at the same viewport and page state. Label each image with URL or template, date, device/viewport, and the change under review. Describe the visible difference and report the related metric separately.

Make screenshots useful evidence, not a performance claim
A screenshot is valuable for editorial review, design QA, release notes, and explaining a visible problem to engineering. It may reveal an overlapping menu, a shifted headline, a blank media area, or a mobile layout that hides important content. It does not measure network timing, interaction latency, or layout movement over time, and it cannot prove that a site became faster.
Capture comparable before-and-after pairs
- Use the same URL, device mode or viewport, and page state on both sides.
- Identify the date, template, viewport/device, and change being reviewed.
- Keep text and interface details readable; crop unrelated browser chrome when it distracts from the comparison.
- For screenshots of loading or shifting behavior, state which moment or state the image represents.
- When making a metric claim, name the measurement tool and say whether the result is field or lab evidence.
Use a caption that separates observation from measurement. For example: “The article headline no longer moves when the lead image appears” describes what the images show. A separate note can report the relevant CLS evidence, with its tool and test context. Do not infer a Core Web Vitals pass from the picture alone.
Interpret results without overclaiming
After deployment, an improved Lighthouse result can provide early feedback under that lab run’s conditions. Search Console field reporting represents actual audience experience and may not change in lockstep with the lab result. Keep both observations in the report rather than selecting whichever sounds more favorable.

Google’s News Initiative page includes audience statements such as “50% of people leave a site if it takes more than 3 seconds to load.” The result page does not identify the original study, sample, or year, so treat it as a statistic presented by Google News Initiative—not as a newly conducted or fully specified study. It is not necessary to use this number to justify measurement: your own field reports and defined test conditions are more useful for assessing your site.
Likewise, a better score does not guarantee search rankings, traffic, retention, or Google News inclusion. Google’s guidance says page experience is part of a wider context; content policies and other factors remain relevant.

Troubleshoot common measurement and capture problems
The screenshot looks faster, but the metric did not improve
The image documents a visual state, not a timing measure. Check that you compared the same URL, viewport, and state, then review the named metric in PageSpeed Insights or the relevant field report. State clearly whether the comparison came from a lab run or audience data.
A Lighthouse result differs between runs
A single lab run is not universal reader evidence. Repeat the test under comparable conditions and use Search Console or available PageSpeed Insights field information for the audience picture. Do not report one run as the site’s permanent performance.
One article looks good, but a page group does not
The article may not represent the whole template group. Recheck the representative URLs and use Search Console’s page-group reporting to identify whether the concern extends beyond that URL. Investigate template-level differences with the site developer.

Check for a changed viewport, URL, scroll position, consent state, or loading moment. Recapture under matching conditions and put the date, page template, device/viewport, and change in the caption.

The page passes Core Web Vitals but has an obvious UX problem
Core Web Vitals cover loading, responsiveness, and stability, not every editorial or usability concern. Document the visible issue separately and address it on its own merits; a favorable metric does not make a confusing interface acceptable.
A screenshot request returns an unexpected result
For API captures, check that the target URL is publicly reachable, the request parameters and API key are correct, and the desired page state has finished loading. Use a selector or wait condition for dynamic content when appropriate, and inspect the response’s page-verdict and billing headers rather than assuming a returned image represents a successful ordinary page load. Consult the API docs for supported parameters.
Keep the newsroom record actionable
Store the baseline and follow-up images with their captions and the corresponding tool output. For each change, record the target template, the specific visible issue, the metric or field report being watched, the date of deployment, and the next review. This makes screenshots useful to editors and engineers without confusing visual evidence with measured performance.

No. Google says page experience is one part of a broader picture, and Google News content policies still govern eligibility.
Should I use mobile or desktop screenshots for a newsroom review?
