Task View is Windows 11’s overview for seeing open windows and organizing work across multiple desktops. Open it by selecting the Task View button on the taskbar or pressing Windows key + Tab. [Microsoft’s multitasking guide]
What Task View does
Task View brings your open windows into an overview and gives you access to multiple desktops. A desktop is a separate work area where you can group apps or content—for example, keeping project apps apart from personal tasks. These are workspaces within Windows, not separate physical devices. Microsoft describes Task View and multiple desktops.
How to open Task View
- Select the Task View button on the taskbar.
- Or press Windows key + Tab to open Task View from the keyboard. Microsoft lists this shortcut.
How to use multiple desktops
Open Task View to create or select a desktop, then use the keyboard shortcuts below to move between work areas or close the current one. Closing a desktop is different from closing its apps; Windows moves the open windows on that desktop to another desktop. See Microsoft’s instructions for configuring multiple desktops.

Task View vs. Alt + Tab

Choose Task View when you want to see or manage desktops as well as windows. Use Alt + Tab when you simply want to jump between open apps or tasks. Microsoft’s multitasking guidance covers both ways to navigate.
If the Task View button is missing
The button can be hidden in taskbar settings; that does not mean the feature is unavailable. Microsoft’s taskbar customization instructions explain how to show or hide taskbar buttons. You can also open Task View with Windows key + Tab.
