Process Explorer is not a Windows 11 built-in app like Task Manager. It is a separate Microsoft Sysinternals utility, so the first launch must come from its downloaded executable or from Sysinternals Live.
The simplest method is to download ProcessExplorer.zip, extract it, and run procexp.exe. If you do not want to keep a local copy, you can launch the same tool directly from Microsoft’s Sysinternals Live service.
Method 1: Download and open Process Explorer
- Open a web browser and go to Microsoft’s Process Explorer download page.
- Select Download Process Explorer.
- When the download finishes, open
ProcessExplorer.zipin File Explorer. - Extract the ZIP archive. In File Explorer, select Extract all, choose a destination, and select Extract.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Double-click
procexp.exe.
Process Explorer is portable. The ZIP download does not start an installation wizard or add the program to Windows 11 automatically. Microsoft’s installation instruction is simply to run procexp.exe.

If Windows displays a security prompt
If User Account Control asks whether to allow the app to make changes, verify that the file is the Microsoft Sysinternals Process Explorer executable, then select Yes if you need its elevated features. Process Explorer can run without administrator privileges, although some system-level process information may be unavailable until it is elevated.

Method 2: Run Process Explorer from Sysinternals Live
Microsoft also provides a Run now from Sysinternals Live option on the official Process Explorer page. Select that option to launch the executable from Microsoft’s Live service rather than extracting a local ZIP file.
You can also open it manually using the following UNC path:
\live.sysinternals.comtoolsprocexp.exe
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer, or open Windows Terminal.
- Enter
\live.sysinternals.comtoolsprocexp.exein the File Explorer address bar or at the terminal prompt. - Press Enter.
- Accept any Windows security or User Account Control prompt that appears.
This method requires access to the Sysinternals Live network location. If it does not open, download and extract the ZIP version instead.

Method 3: Open it from Windows Terminal or Command Prompt
After extracting Process Explorer, change to the folder containing procexp.exe and run it:
cd "C:PathToProcessExplorer"
procexp.exe
For example, if you extracted the archive into your Downloads folder:
cd "%USERPROFILE%DownloadsProcessExplorer"
procexp.exe
The exact folder name can differ depending on where you extracted the archive. If the command reports that procexp.exe is not recognized, use the full path or change to the correct extracted folder.

Useful launch commands
Process Explorer supports several documented switches. Run these commands from the folder containing the executable, or replace procexp.exe with its full path.
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
procexp.exe /e |
Prompts Process Explorer to restart with administrator rights. |
procexp.exe /s:1234 |
Starts Process Explorer and selects process ID 1234. |
procexp.exe /t |
Starts minimized in the notification area. |
procexp.exe /p:r |
Sets the Process Explorer process priority to realtime. |
procexp.exe /p:h |
Sets its priority to high. |
procexp.exe /p:n |
Sets its priority to normal. |
procexp.exe /p:l |
Sets its priority to low. |
For normal troubleshooting, run procexp.exe without a priority switch. Realtime priority is generally unnecessary and can allow the utility to compete aggressively with other processes for CPU time.
What you see when Process Explorer opens
The main window is divided into two panes:
- The upper pane lists active processes in a hierarchical view.
- The lower pane shows either handles or loaded DLLs for the selected process, depending on the selected lower-pane view.
This is why Process Explorer is not simply another name for Task Manager. Task Manager is included with Windows 11; Process Explorer is a separate Sysinternals diagnostic tool with its own executable and launch methods.

How to make Process Explorer easier to open later
Because the ZIP version is portable, Windows does not necessarily create a Start-menu entry. To create a convenient shortcut:
- Keep the extracted Process Explorer folder in a permanent location, such as
C:ToolsProcessExplorer. Do not create a shortcut to an executable that you plan to delete from Downloads. - Right-click
procexp.exeand select Show more options if necessary. - Select Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).
- Optionally right-click the new shortcut, select Properties, and choose Advanced to enable Run as administrator.
You can then open Process Explorer from that shortcut. It may also become available through Start search after Windows has indexed the executable or after you create an appropriate shortcut, but it is not present in a fresh Windows 11 installation.
Process Explorer will not open: fixes
| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| The ZIP file will not open | Download it again from Microsoft’s official Sysinternals page. A partial download can produce an invalid archive. |
| You cannot find the executable | Extract the ZIP first, then open the extracted folder. Look specifically for procexp.exe. |
| Windows blocks the file | Right-click the executable, select Properties, and check for an Unblock option on the General tab. Only do this for a copy obtained from Microsoft. |
| The Live path does nothing | Check your internet connection and whether your network blocks UNC or Sysinternals Live access. Use the downloaded ZIP method as a fallback. |
| Some process details are missing | Close Process Explorer, then run procexp.exe /e or choose Run as administrator from its shortcut. |
| You searched Start and found only Task Manager | That is expected on a system where Process Explorer has not been downloaded or given a shortcut. Open the extracted procexp.exe instead. |

What file opens Process Explorer?
Open procexp.exe from the extracted Process Explorer folder. This is the executable named in Microsoft’s current installation instructions.
Do I need to install Process Explorer?
No conventional installation is required for the ZIP version. Extract the archive and run procexp.exe. You can create a shortcut if you want easier access.
Can I run Process Explorer without administrator rights?
Yes. It can run without administrative privileges, but elevation may expose additional system-level process information. Use procexp.exe /e to request elevation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat is the Sysinternals Live command for Process Explorer?
Use \live.sysinternals.comtoolsprocexp.exe in File Explorer, Command Prompt, or Windows Terminal.
Is Process Explorer the same as Task Manager?
No. Task Manager is built into Windows 11. Process Explorer is a separate Sysinternals tool with a more detailed process view, including a lower pane for handles or loaded DLLs.
The Bottom Line
For a permanent local copy, download ProcessExplorer.zip, extract it, and run procexp.exe. For a one-time launch, use Microsoft’s Run now from Sysinternals Live option or enter \live.sysinternals.comtoolsprocexp.exe. Do not expect Process Explorer to appear in a new Windows 11 Start menu before you download it or create a shortcut.
