To use PowerShell with administrator rights, sign in to Windows and launch PowerShell with Run as administrator. If Windows asks for credentials, provide an account that has the required administrator rights. This elevates the PowerShell process; it does not change the Windows account you are signed in to.
Open classic Windows PowerShell as administrator
- Open Start and search for Windows PowerShell.
- Right-click the Windows PowerShell shortcut and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt. If Windows requests credentials, enter those for an administrator account you are authorized to use.
- Check the window title. Microsoft’s PowerShell 101 guide gives Administrator: Windows PowerShell as an example; the exact wording can vary by host and version. Microsoft’s PowerShell 101 guide
If you signed in with a standard account, Windows may let you provide credentials for a separate account with local administrator rights. Use only an account appropriate for the task; local work does not generally require using a domain administrator account.
Open an administrator shell in Windows Terminal
- Right-click the Windows Terminal icon and select Run as administrator.
- Alternatively, press Windows key + X and select Windows Terminal (Admin).
- Approve the prompt or enter administrator credentials if Windows asks.
Terminal’s administrator launch elevates the Terminal window and its shell sessions. Windows Terminal does not support having elevated and non-elevated shell tabs coexist in the same window. Microsoft’s Windows Terminal FAQ
Start a separate elevated PowerShell process from a shell
From an existing PowerShell session, run this command to request a new elevated Windows PowerShell process:

Start-Process -FilePath "powershell" -Verb RunAs
Windows handles the elevation prompt or credential request. This opens a separate process; it does not convert the current shell into an elevated one. Microsoft’s Start-Process documentation describes the cmdlet’s process-launch and credential options. Do not put passwords directly in commands or scripts.
Which method should you use?
| Method | Starting point | What it does | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Run as administrator | Windows PowerShell shortcut in Start | Launches an elevated PowerShell window | Interactive use of classic Windows PowerShell |
| Run as administrator / Windows Terminal (Admin) | Terminal icon or Windows key + X menu | Launches an elevated Terminal window; elevated and regular tabs cannot be mixed in it | Interactive use in Windows Terminal |
Start-Process -FilePath "powershell" -Verb RunAs |
Existing PowerShell session | Starts a separate elevated process | Launching a new elevated shell from a command or workflow |
When elevation is—and is not—needed
A regular PowerShell session can run commands that do not require administrator rights. A command that changes protected local settings or otherwise requires elevated permissions can fail when run from a standard session. Elevating PowerShell only affects operations on the local computer; remote administration has separate authorization and configuration requirements. Local elevation alone does not grant access to a remote computer. Microsoft’s PowerShell 101 guide

Use an elevated shell carefully
Microsoft advises: “You should only run PowerShell elevated as an administrator when absolutely necessary.” A program started from an elevated PowerShell process inherits elevated rights, so an error or malicious content can have greater consequences than it would in a normal session. Keep routine work in a standard shell and elevate only for the operations that need it. Microsoft’s Windows security guidance
