To access DRM-protected content, sign in to the account that has a valid entitlement to the title, then open it with the provider’s supported app, browser, or playback device. If it does not work, check that you are using the right account and a supported access route before contacting the provider. “Unlocking” does not generally mean you can lawfully bypass the protection: U.S. law restricts circumvention, subject to limited, specific exemptions.

How do you access DRM-protected content?

  1. Identify the provider and entitlement

Find the store, streaming service, software publisher, library, or institution that supplied the title. Sign in to the account associated with the purchase, subscription, rental, loan, or other authorized access. Having a file or device is not by itself proof that the account is entitled to open the content.

  2. Choose a supported access route

Use the provider’s official app, browser reader, or playback software, or a compatible device it supports. A title may be available through one route but not another, so check the provider’s help information for that specific title and platform.

  3. Check compatibility before changing settings

Confirm that the service supports your operating system, device, app or browser, and software version. DRM systems and playback requirements differ by provider; a device that plays one service’s content may not support another service’s content.

    • Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
    • Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
  4. Open the title and follow the provider’s prompts

Use the provider’s normal sign-in and playback or reading flow. If the service offers an authorized download for offline use, follow its instructions and terms; availability and limits vary by provider.

What should you check if a title will not open?

Work through these checks in order. They help distinguish a sign-in or compatibility issue from a title that is not available through the route you selected.

  • Account: Make sure you are signed in to the account that bought, borrowed, rented, or subscribed to the title.
  • Entitlement: Check that the purchase or access period is active and that the title appears in the account or library associated with it.
  • Availability: Confirm that the specific title is supported by the app, browser, or device you are trying to use.
  • Compatibility: Check the provider’s current requirements for your platform and update the official app or browser if needed.
  • Connection and service status: Check your internet connection and follow any service-status or troubleshooting guidance the provider offers.
  • Account or licensing problem: Contact the provider if the entitlement is missing, an account restriction appears, or the supported playback route still fails.

If your preferred device or accessibility workflow is not supported, ask the provider about an accessible edition, another authorized format, a compatible device, or library or institutional access. A support limitation is not a reason to assume a circumvention method is permitted.

Can you read Kindle books without a Kindle device?

Yes. Amazon’s Kindle guidance describes reading through Kindle apps on supported devices or through Kindle for Web in a browser; a dedicated Kindle e-reader is optional. The browser option has an important limitation: Amazon says not all Kindle titles are available in Kindle for Web, so a particular book may require a Kindle app or e-reader.

Authorized Kindle route What the guidance establishes What to check
Kindle reading app Kindle apps are an option for reading on supported devices. Check Amazon’s current device and title support information.
Kindle for Web Books can be read in a browser. Not every title is available through this route.
Kindle e-reader A dedicated device is one way to read eligible Kindle books. Confirm that the title and device are supported.

This is an example of provider-specific access, not a rule for other book services or DRM systems.

Why does access depend on the service and platform?

DRM is not one universal system with a single app or device that opens every protected work. For example, Google describes Widevine as its content-protection system for premium media and identifies multiple services that use it. That does not mean those services share the same account rules, supported devices, or playback requirements. The provider’s instructions for the particular title remain decisive.

When choosing among authorized routes, compare the specific title’s availability, supported platforms, access model, offline-download terms, accessibility features, and geographic availability. These options differ by provider; verify each one rather than assuming that a purchase, subscription, or device grants access through every route.

What does U.S. law say about DRM circumvention?

This legal overview is limited to the United States and is not individualized legal advice. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act prohibits circumventing technological measures used to control access to copyrighted works. The statute also addresses certain acts involving the manufacture, import, offering, provision, or trafficking of circumvention technologies, products, services, devices, or components.

Section 1201 includes a triennial rulemaking process through which the Librarian of Congress may establish limited exemptions for defined classes of works and uses. An exemption is conditional, not a general permission to defeat DRM: its wording may depend on the work, user, purpose, access-control measure, and other requirements. The statute also contains a narrow provision concerning certain reverse engineering for software interoperability under specified conditions; it should not be treated as blanket authorization to circumvent access controls.

The current regulation, 37 CFR § 201.40, sets out exemption classes and conditions. The Copyright Office identifies a 2027 rulemaking cycle and says that proceeding has begun. Because exemption rules are time-sensitive and fact-specific, consult the current regulation and proceeding materials before relying on an exemption. Laws outside the United States may differ.

What are the practical alternatives when your device or format is unsupported?

  • Use another app or device that the provider lists as compatible.
  • Ask the provider whether it offers a supported accessible edition or alternative format.
  • For a library or institution title, ask that organization about its supported reader, playback method, or access assistance.
  • If you need offline access or a particular accessibility feature, confirm that the provider offers it for that title and platform before relying on it.
