There is no single safe way to open the back of every HTC phone: some older models have a removable cover that lifts from a bottom notch, others use a sliding cover, and newer phones may have a sealed back. Check the exact model and regional variant in its HTC manual or support page before trying. Using the wrong method can damage the cover or phone.
Identify the phone before opening it
Find the model name and variant in the phone’s settings, on its packaging, or on its original documentation. HTC instructions differ even among phones in the same product family. The procedures below apply only to the named models; do not assume a similar-looking HTC phone opens the same way.
- Removable cover: HTC’s cited Desire instructions describe opening a small gap at the bottom and lifting the cover gently.
- Sliding cover: The HTC Status uses a push-to-slide method.
- Sealed rear housing: Do not try to pry it open; consult the model’s instructions or contact HTC or an authorized service center.
The cited removable-cover procedures use a thumb or finger. They do not call for a separate tool, and they are not a reason to use a generic metal pry tool.

Turn the phone over so the back faces you. Keep it secure and use the opening specified for your model. The instructions below are limited to the models named in HTC’s guidance.

Desire 512 (Cricket)
- Hold the phone face down.
- Use a thumb or finger at the small opening on the bottom edge to start opening the cover.
- Lift the cover gently.
To replace it, align the top of the cover, then press the sides and bottom until it clicks into place. HTC’s Desire 512 instructions
Desire 520 (Cricket) and Desire 526G dual sim
- Hold the phone with its bottom edge up and its back facing you.
- Use a finger at the bottom opening to create a small gap.
- Lift the cover gently from the bottom and sides.
To close it, align the top of the cover and press along the sides and lower part until it clicks. Follow the instructions for your exact variant: Desire 520 (Cricket) or Desire 526G dual sim.

Desire 326G dual sim
- Find the small opening at the bottom and use a finger to start a gap.
- Lift the cover gently from the bottom and sides.
- When replacing it, align the top and press the cover down from top to bottom until it clicks.

Desire 601
- Locate the notch near the charger or accessory jack.
- Open the cover gently from the bottom and sides.
- To replace it, align the top and press the sides and bottom until it locks.
- Check that the cover sits evenly, without gaps or bulges.
HTC says this cover is removed to access the battery, SIM, or SD card. HTC’s Desire 601 instructions

- Turn off the phone and hold it face down.
- Brace the phone’s body securely.
- Push the battery cover out with both thumbs.
- To replace it, slide the cover back until it clicks.
These steps come from the HTC Status manual hosted by AT&T. Do not use this sliding technique on another model unless its own instructions specify it.
If the back does not release easily
- Stop rather than forcing the cover. Recheck the model and its official instructions, including the notch location and release direction.
- Do not insert a metal tool or try a sliding motion on a phone whose model-specific instructions call for lifting.
- If the back appears sealed, or opening it would require internal repair, do not pry it open.
- If the cover is bulging or will not sit flat after reassembly, stop using force and seek qualified service.
Built-in batteries, warranty, and service
HTC’s UK service FAQ says newer models have built-in batteries and warns: “Do not remove the back cover or battery as it may cause physical damage and void the warranty on your device.” It also says service should be performed by HTC or an HTC-authorized service center. That is guidance from HTC’s UK page, not a determination of warranty terms for every model or region. For battery problems on a sealed phone, contact HTC support or an authorized service center rather than attempting to remove the back. HTC UK service FAQ
