Before taking apart a PlayStation 4, find its CUH model number and decide whether you need to replace the hard drive, clean the case, or remove internal components. Those are different jobs: Sony’s instructions cover hard-drive replacement, while opening the console for cleaning or deeper repairs requires a guide for the exact PS4 revision. Sony warns users not to disassemble or modify the system.
Find your PS4 model number first
PS4 procedures vary by hardware revision. Check the model number on the console chassis or original packaging, then match the full CUH number to the guide you plan to follow. Sony’s support page explains where to look for CUH-10xx/11xx/12xx, CUH-20xx, and CUH-70xx systems: find your PS4 serial and model numbers.
Do not assume that a screw location or case-opening sequence shown for an original PS4 also applies to a Slim or Pro. Use a procedure written for your model and the repair you intend to make.

Hard-drive replacement
If you only need to replace or upgrade the drive, use Sony’s HDD instructions rather than a full teardown. The page covers separate procedures for model families including CUH-7000, CUH-2015, and CUH-1200/1110/1000. Sony recommends backing up save data, identifying the model, and preparing a long Phillips screwdriver. For the original-family procedure, the steps include moving the top panel, removing the PlayStation-symbol screw, sliding out the drive, removing the four caddy screws, and fitting the replacement drive. These instructions describe drive access, not removal of the power supply, motherboard, or other internal parts.
Dust cleaning
For cleaning that requires opening the case, use a model-specific repair guide. iFixit’s original PS4 opening and cleaning guide describes removing rear stickers to expose case screws, taking out three 7.2 mm TR8 security screws, and releasing the lower shell’s plastic clips. That screw layout and sequence belong to the guide’s model scope; do not transfer them to another revision.

Clips can take significant force to release, but forcing the wrong point can damage the shell. Work around the case carefully and stop if it does not release as the model-specific guide describes.

Full internal repair
Removing components such as the power supply, fan, or heatsink is a deeper repair than routine dust cleaning. Choose a guide that matches both the CUH model and the component being removed. iFixit provides a PS4 repair index with model-specific references, including a separate CUH-1200 entire-console disassembly guide.

Tools depend on the job
- For Sony’s HDD procedure: use a long Phillips screwdriver, as specified in Sony’s instructions.
- For the original PS4 opening guide: it calls for a TR8 security Torx screwdriver for the three 7.2 mm security screws.
- For deeper repairs: check the exact guide before buying tools or parts. Thermal paste is relevant if a repair removes the heatsink; it is not automatically needed for every case opening or dust cleaning.
Handle connectors and case clips carefully
When following the original PS4 cleaning guide, take particular care with the power-supply cable. Its connector can be firmly seated. Grip the white connector head and work it out; do not tug hard on the wires. Follow the guide’s orientation and sequence for your model rather than using force based on a different revision.

Sony’s PS4 safety guide says, “Never disassemble or modify the system or accessories.” It also says the PS4 has no user-serviceable internal components other than removing the supplied hard disk drive without disassembling or modifying it, and warns of electric shock and laser-radiation exposure. Read the CUH-7215B safety guide; its warranty terms are region-specific, so they should not be treated as a universal statement about every model or country.

Sony’s HDD page says that removing the HDD bay cover sticker in its CUH-7000 instructions will not affect the warranty. That statement concerns that specific HDD access step; it does not establish that full internal disassembly is approved or has the same warranty treatment.

- Use the matching guide’s reassembly sequence, keeping track of screws and their locations as you work.
- Check that cables and connectors are seated by their housings, not strained by their wires.
- If a fault remains after a component repair, consult the model-specific repair reference for that symptom instead of applying another revision’s procedure.
