PHP cannot directly open a visitor’s browser window because PHP runs on the web server. To request that a PHP page open in a separate browser context, put target="_blank" on the HTML link whose href points to the PHP page.
Use an HTML link with target="_blank"
For example:
<a href="page.php" target="_blank">Open the PHP page (opens in a new tab or window)</a>The href identifies the destination PHP page. The target attribute belongs to the anchor element and asks the browser to use another browsing context. Depending on browser settings, that context may appear as a tab or as a separate window; a website cannot reliably force a physical window.
Why PHP does not open the window itself
PHP is processed server-side. The server executes the PHP code and sends the resulting response—typically HTML—to the browser. The browser then interprets the HTML and decides how navigation behaves. SitePoint explains this server-side model in its PHP and MySQL installation guide.
Therefore, place the opening behavior in the generated HTML, not in a special PHP “open window” command:

Use link text that warns users in advance, such as “opens in a new tab or window.” The W3C/WAI technique for user-requested new windows recommends identifying this behavior in the link text: W3C/WAI Techniques for WCAG.

When a new context is—and is not—appropriate
A regular link is usually the least surprising choice. W3C/WAI cautions that new windows and tabs can disorient some people, particularly users who have difficulty perceiving visual content. Use a separate context only when it serves a clear purpose—for example, allowing someone to consult help without losing a partially completed form—and provide advance warning.
- Same context: use a normal link when users should simply continue to the destination.
- Separate context: use
target="_blank"when preserving the current page is useful and the link label explains the behavior.
Common mistakes
- Putting
target="_blank"in PHP code without outputting it as part of an HTML anchor. - Assuming “window” always means a separate physical window; browsers may create a tab.
- Giving no warning that navigation opens elsewhere.
- Using a new tab for every link, which can create a confusing browsing experience.
Do you need a PHP library or book?
No. A link with target="_blank" requires no library, database, or special PHP package. Readers who need broader PHP instruction may consult SitePoint’s PHP & MySQL: Novice to Ninja, 6th Edition, but it is not needed for this technique.
