To buy shares listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), open an account with a PSX-recognized securities broker licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). Complete the broker’s current identity checks, confirm your Unique Identity Number (UIN) and share-custody arrangements, fund the account using an accepted non-cash method, then place an order through the broker. Keep the signed account documents and trade confirmations, and check that purchased shares are credited to the relevant CDC account.
Choose a PSX broker and verify it before sending money
PSX advises investors to transact through an active TREC holder or recognized brokerage firm licensed by SECP. Start with PSX’s broker information and verify the firm and its registered branch details. Do not rely on an unsolicited agent or an unverified social-media account.
Compare brokers on practical service needs: whether they offer online trading, how they handle questions and confirmations, whether they provide research, their fee schedule, and how you can reach the service team. A broker’s stated commission is not necessarily the full cost of trading. Ask for a written schedule of applicable charges, including brokerage commission and relevant CDC, exchange, clearing, tax, and regulatory charges. These costs can vary; confirm current charges directly with the broker and official schedules rather than relying on an old estimate.
Choose the account route that fits your situation
| Route | Who it may suit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Standard brokerage account | Investors who need the broker’s applicable account features or do not qualify for a simplified route. | Complete the broker’s current Customer Relationship Form and KYC/CDD process. PSX hosts forms for conventional, online-only or trading-only, and Shariah-compliant broker arrangements. Check PSX’s investor guidance and confirm the correct form with your broker. |
| Sahulat Account | Local individual investors seeking simplified onboarding for Ready Market trading. | It is single-holder and excludes leveraged products such as margin trading or financing and stock lending or borrowing. Online access depends on the broker. PSX’s Sahulat page says an account can be converted to a normal account and allows multiple Sahulat accounts across brokers, but only one with each broker. Confirm eligibility and current terms with the broker. See PSX’s Sahulat Account information. |
| Broker online onboarding | Applicants whose selected broker supports remote account opening. | PSX lists brokers that offer online account opening. Check the live broker list and complete the application through the broker’s official website or app. View PSX’s online account-opening information. |
| Shared KYC | Eligible resident individual Pakistanis with current bank records and an active account at a participating bank. | Initiate the request through the bank portal, select a broker, and consent to data sharing. CDC routes information onward, NCCPL issues a UKN, and the broker completes its own checks and confirms account opening and UIN tagging. Participating banks and brokers can change; verify availability before starting. Check PSX’s Shared KYC information. |
| Roshan Digital Account route | Non-resident Pakistanis using the designated-bank process described in PSX’s investor guide. | In the bank portal, select Roshan Equity Investment if available; the bank presents designated PSX brokers and sends information onward for broker onboarding and NCCPL UIN creation. The broker still conducts its own KYC/CDD. Verify current eligibility and participating institutions through the official bank and broker portals. Do not assume Sahulat’s local-investor terms apply to NRPs. |
Resolve the published Sahulat limit before placing an order
PSX’s Sahulat Account page, accessed in 2026, states a PKR 3,000,000 per-account purchase-position limit. PSX’s Investor Awareness Guide instead reports a PKR 1,000,000 maximum position limit and a PKR 1,000,000 net-trade limit, and refers to biometric IBAN/mobile verification. These official PSX materials conflict. Confirm the effective limit and current verification requirements with PSX and your chosen broker before trading; do not assume either figure is current for your account.

Complete KYC and review the account paperwork
Requirements depend on your investor type and account route. Expect identity checks and collection of information and documents under the broker’s current KYC/CDD process. PSX’s account-opening guidance includes identity documents and, where relevant, documents for joint holders, nominees, or authorized representatives. Ask your broker for the checklist that applies to you rather than relying on a generic list.
- Open the account in your own name. PSX’s official account-opening guide states: “You must ensure that the said Account is opened in your name.”
- Read the account form, terms, fee schedule, and authorization provisions before signing. Compare the broker’s form with the relevant PSX standard form and ask questions about anything unclear.
- If another person will operate the account, understand the written authority required and the risk of granting someone else control.
- Keep a signed copy of all account-opening documents and use the broker’s verified official channels for follow-up.
Confirm your UIN and how your shares will be held
Make sure the broker confirms that your UIN has been assigned or registered and explains the CDC arrangement for your account. PSX describes a CDC sub-account as the place purchased shares are held and encourages individual investors to consider opening a CDC Investor Account for individual custody. The setup is not identical for every investor, so confirm with your broker and CDC which account or accounts will hold your shares and how you can view them.

The institutions have distinct roles: NCCPL handles settlement, while CDC handles share delivery and custody. That distinction matters after a purchase: a broker trade confirmation shows the transaction, while the relevant CDC account is where you should check the resulting share credit.

Fund the account and place your first order
- Wait for account activation. Confirm with the broker that onboarding is complete and that you can trade. Ask which funding methods it accepts and follow the broker’s official instructions.
- Transfer funds through an accepted method. PSX’s checklist advises depositing initial funds and cautions against cash deposits. Use a payment channel the broker confirms, and retain your transfer record.
- Submit the order. Use the broker’s online application if your account has access, or contact its dealing desk through an official channel. Specify the security and order details carefully; ask the broker how its system displays order status and execution.
- Keep the execution confirmation. After an order is executed, request or save the broker’s trade confirmation. Check that it reflects the transaction you intended and retain it with your account records.
- Monitor settlement and share credit. Review communications from the broker, NCCPL, and CDC, then check that the purchased shares appear in the relevant CDC account. PSX describes NCCPL as handling settlement and CDC as handling delivery; do not rely on an older stated settlement interval as a current rule without confirmation from an official current source.
Protect the account after opening it
- Use the broker’s official contact details for funding, order instructions, and account changes.
- Save signed account paperwork, payment records, order details, and trade confirmations.
- Monitor alerts and statements from the broker, NCCPL, and CDC, and contact the relevant institution promptly about an unfamiliar transaction or missing share credit.
- Understand that buying shares involves risk. PSX’s investor material recommends understanding those risks and obtaining appropriate professional advice; account-opening instructions do not determine whether any particular share is right for you.
