To notify commenters about replies to their own comments, use a comment-subscription plugin and select a reply-only subscription scope.
Use a comment-subscription plugin for reply-only emails
The most direct documented setup uses Subscribe to Comments Reloaded. Install and activate it, then configure the comment form so visitors can opt in to replies to the specific comment they wrote.
Configure Subscribe to Comments Reloaded
- In WordPress admin, install and activate Subscribe to Comments Reloaded.
- Open STCR » Comment Form.
- In Advanced subscription, enable the feature.
- Set Subscription type to Replies to this comment.
- Save the settings.
The cited setup guide, published July 19, 2024, says the comment form then offers visitors a choice such as Replies to my comments; its default is Don’t subscribe. Leave the subscription-management links in the visitor messages so people can change or cancel their subscriptions. The plugin can also manage subscribers and disable comment subscriptions on selected posts. Labels and screen locations may change in later releases, and the guide does not establish current maintenance status or compatibility with every WordPress version. See the complete walkthrough at WPBeginner’s reply-notification guide.
Choose the correct notification scope
Reply-only and post-wide notifications are different. Check the scope before enabling an option:
| Option | What the visitor receives | Use when |
|---|---|---|
| Replies to this comment (Subscribe to Comments Reloaded) | Replies to the visitor’s selected comment | You want narrowly targeted notifications |
| Comment Notification (Thrive Comments) | Emails when someone replies to the user’s comment | You want comment-level reply alerts |
| Post Notification (Thrive Comments) | Emails whenever a new comment or reply is added to a particular post | You want all activity on a post, not only replies to one person |
The Thrive Comments route described in the same guide requires connecting an email delivery service and entering that service’s API key or token. Select Comment Notification, not Post Notification, when the requirement is replies only. Details are documented in the Thrive Comments section of the guide.
Why WordPress’s Discussion settings are not enough
Under Settings → Discussion, WordPress documents alerts for site operators when anyone posts a comment and when a comment is held for moderation. These controls are not a visitor-facing subscription system for notifying the author of a comment when another user replies. The official behavior is described in the Settings Discussion screen documentation.

Developer-level customization
For a custom implementation, WordPress exposes the comment_notification_recipients filter. Its documented default sends comment notifications only to post authors, while the filter can add recipients: comment_notification_recipients reference.
The separate comment_notification_notify_author filter controls whether an author is notified about their own comments on their own posts and defaults to false: comment_notification_notify_author reference.

Important behavior and delivery caveats
Threading depth
A WordPress.org support response about a transactional reply-notification setup reports that it works with single-threaded comments and recommends setting threaded comments to a depth of 2. Treat that as a caveat for the described product and configuration, not a universal WordPress rule: support discussion.
Rank #4
Self-replies and moderation
The same support response says a user is not notified when replying to their own comment, and a reply that requires approval is emailed after approval. Your moderation workflow therefore affects when a notification can be sent: support discussion.
Email delivery
Test outgoing mail on the actual site. The Thrive Comments setup described above uses an external email delivery service. Separately, the WordPress.org listing for Comment Reply Email Notification says that plugin uses WordPress’s standard mail function and suggests considering an SMTP mail plugin if mail does not work: plugin directory listing. Neither source guarantees reliable delivery on a particular host.
Best Value
Comment imports
The Comment Reply Email Notification listing warns that its wp_insert_comment hook may send notifications whenever a comment is created. Disable that plugin during bulk comment imports if you use it: plugin directory listing. This warning is specific to that plugin.
Consent and control
Keep the opt-in visible on the comment form, make the scope explicit, and retain links that let subscribers manage or stop messages. Do not silently convert a reply-only choice into a subscription to every comment on the post.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify the setup before publishing it
- Open a post while logged out or in a test account and submit a comment.
- Confirm the form presents the reply-subscription choice and that the default matches your consent policy.
- Submit a second comment as another user, then reply to the first comment.
- Check that the first commenter receives the message and that the second commenter does not receive an unrelated reply notification.
- Approve a held reply and verify when the email is sent.
- Use the message’s management or unsubscribe link to confirm it works.
- Repeat the test with your site’s real mail configuration, including spam and bounce handling.
Which route fits your site?
- Choose Subscribe to Comments Reloaded when you need a visitor opt-in specifically for replies to selected comments and want subscriber or post-level controls described in the walkthrough.
- Choose Thrive Comments when you already use its comment system and can provide the required email-service connection; select comment-level notification for reply-only behavior.
- Use custom hooks only when you are prepared to implement and maintain subscription storage, matching logic, consent, and unsubscribe handling yourself.
