You usually should not convert every video to 30 fps. For individual YouTube uploads, preserve the frame rate at which each video was recorded. For a continuous always-on stream, choose one output cadence that suits the channel’s footage, then conform assets in the playout pipeline only when needed. Check converted clips for judder, dropped motion, audio-sync problems, and interlacing before putting them into rotation.
Do all the videos need the same frame rate?
No. YouTube’s upload guidance recommends encoding and uploading content at its recorded frame rate. Its common upload rates are 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps, and other rates—including 23.98, 29.97, and 59.94 fps—are also accepted. A library containing several rates is not, by itself, a reason to convert every file.
A continuous live stream is different: the encoder sends one configured output cadence. If clips with different rates are joined in a single output, the playout pipeline may need to conform them to a common timeline. That is an operational choice, not a YouTube rule that every source file must use one rate.

Use the source rate when publishing videos separately. For a single continuous output, select a house rate based on the dominant footage, the motion the channel needs to preserve, and the encoder’s output constraints. Converting 25 fps footage to 30 fps does not create additional captured motion; it changes how frames fit the output cadence and can introduce irregular timing.

Inventory the video files before converting
Inspect the actual properties of each asset before batch processing. Record its frame rate, scan type, and whether its rate is constant or variable. Distinguish fractional rates such as 23.976 and 29.97 from exact 24 and 30 fps; they are close, but not identical, and should not be casually relabeled as interchangeable.
- Group assets by source rate and scan type.
- Flag interlaced material separately; it needs deinterlacing before upload or progressive-frame conversion.
- Identify variable-frame-rate files, which may need an explicit constant-rate output for a particular playout workflow.
- Keep a record of each file’s source properties and any converted output properties.
YouTube does not prescribe an inventory utility or a universal target rate. Treat this as a media-management step so you can make a deliberate conversion decision rather than applying a blanket setting.
Choose between native rates and a house rate
Preserve native rates for separate uploads
For individually uploaded videos, retain the rate at which the footage was recorded when practical. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings say: “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.” That keeps the original motion cadence and avoids unnecessary frame resampling.

Use a common cadence when the live pipeline needs one
For one continuous live output, choose a target that fits the channel’s primary material and encoder configuration. A channel dominated by 25 fps material, for example, should not default to 30 fps merely because it is familiar. Compare representative clips at the intended output rate before converting a full library.
YouTube Live supports encoder output up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends automatic detection of live resolution and frame rate by default; manual resolution selection requires a custom stream key. The encoder’s selected output settings govern the live cadence, even if the source clips have different rates.
Compare the trade-offs
| Approach | What it preserves or simplifies | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Keep each asset at its recorded rate | Preserves the source’s original motion cadence; avoids unnecessary conversion for separate uploads. | A continuous playout pipeline may need to conform sources to the encoder’s single output cadence. |
| Convert assets to a house rate | Can make timing consistent through a continuous playout and encoder path. | Frames may be dropped or duplicated, or interpolated; review for motion artifacts and confirm duration and sync. |
Understand what frame-rate conversion does
Constant-frame-rate conversion is not just changing a label in the file’s metadata. FFmpeg’s fps filter converts to a specified constant frame rate by duplicating or dropping frames as necessary. Dropping frames reduces temporal sampling; duplicated frames can appear as judder or brief holds.

FFmpeg also documents a framerate filter that interpolates new frames from existing ones. Interpolation can produce synthetic-motion artifacts around occlusions, fast movement, or scene cuts, and its result depends on the footage and settings. It is not a guaranteed improvement. FFmpeg’s documentation says this filter is not designed to work correctly on interlaced media, so deinterlace first.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. A proper conversion should preserve the intended clip duration and audio synchronization. Merely retagging a file or changing timestamps is not equivalent to resampling frames onto a new cadence.
Deinterlace interlaced footage first
YouTube instructs creators to deinterlace interlaced content before uploading. Its example converts 1080i60 to 1080p30. Interlaced fields are not the same thing as progressive frames: do not simply label 60 interlaced fields per second as 60 progressive frames per second.

For archive footage, check the source’s scan type, deinterlace it using an appropriate workflow, then review the progressive result for combing, softness, or motion artifacts. Only after that should you consider any additional frame-rate conversion.
Convert and validate a test set before changing the library
- Choose representative clips. Include the lowest and highest source rates, typical pans or fast motion, titles, scene cuts, and interlaced archive footage if the channel uses it.
- Pick the intended output rate. Base it on dominant source material and motion needs, rather than assuming 30 fps is always best.
- Convert a short sample. Use a constant-rate method when the pipeline requires a fixed cadence. Deinterlace interlaced sources before progressive interpolation.
- Review the result. Check motion cadence for repeated or missing frames, any interpolation artifacts, clip duration, and audio sync—especially across playlist joins.
- Test the actual live path. Confirm the encoder reports the expected output rate and test audio and movement similar to the real stream before relying on the setup.
- Monitor during operation. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages during the live output; a successful file conversion alone does not verify the complete stream path.
YouTube’s live guidance recommends pre-event testing that includes representative audio and movement, and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Converting assets before they enter an always-on playout path can simplify operations where a common cadence is required, but YouTube does not prescribe a particular playout architecture.

Keep the live encoder settings in context
- Frame rate: YouTube Live supports encoder output up to 60 fps.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Detection: Automatic detection of live resolution and frame rate is recommended by default; manual resolution selection requires a custom stream key.
- Bitrate: Do not treat one bitrate as universal. YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on resolution, standard versus high frame-rate class, and SDR versus HDR. Check the current official table for the exact output you intend to use.
These are YouTube platform recommendations, not guarantees that every encoder implements settings identically. The official help pages can change, so check them before setting exact encoder values.

Copyright and channel-policy checks still matter
Frame-rate conversion does not grant rights to use footage or music and does not determine whether a channel qualifies for monetization. Before scheduling a video, confirm you have the necessary rights and review YouTube’s copyright and reused-content rules for your channel and material. Editing cadence or looping a recording does not, by itself, resolve those questions.
For additional preparation, use the copyright safety checklist. If you are planning storage or a library conversion, the upload-time calculator and cloud vs PC cost calculator may help with logistics; they do not replace testing the actual output.
