To find connected equipment, start in Devices or browse by room; to set device behavior, look for Routines or Automations. Samsung has changed the app’s labels and layout over time, so the tabs on your Android phone may not match older guides.
How do I find the SmartThings tutorials?
- Open the SmartThings app on your Android phone.
- Tap Menu, shown as three horizontal lines.
- Tap How to use, then select a tutorial.
This is Samsung’s built-in learning route. The Menu also contains supplementary SmartThings features.
Where are my devices?
Open Devices to find and control equipment you have already added to SmartThings. If your app organizes devices by Rooms, choose the room where the equipment is installed. Samsung described a July 2024 update that put rooms in top-level tabs in the Devices area and added search suggestions based on device types you own; the precise arrangement can vary by app version.
If you cannot spot a device, try the room view or device search if those controls appear in your version. SmartThings navigation is not a substitute for adding or setting up a device: this area is for locating and controlling devices already connected to the app.

What are Home and Favorites for?
This is the app’s starting area for quick access to commonly used devices, routines, scenes, or services. Older instructions may call it Favorites; Samsung’s 2024 announcement described Favorites becoming a Home page.
Samsung said Home could show personalized Home Insight messages, such as home-status summaries and suggestions drawing on information including device use, home and device status, weather, and indoor conditions. Which insights appear can depend on the account, region, setup, and available data, so do not expect every Home page to look the same.

Where do I set up a routine?
Look for Routines or Automations. This is where you create rules for devices to respond to a time or another condition. The section name has varied: Samsung’s 2021 redesign called it Automations, while support material also uses Routines.
Samsung’s April 2025 update described recurring routines with weekly, monthly, or annual schedules. Availability of a particular scheduling option can depend on the installed app build, region, and connected equipment.

What is the Life section?
Life is an area for SmartThings services. Samsung support examples include SmartThings Find and SmartThings Monitor. The services available in your app depend on your region and setup.
Where are SmartThings settings?
Tap Menu → Settings. Samsung lists account information, location use, favorites sync, notification controls, linked services, permissions, and app version information among the settings and details available there. The labels and options shown may differ with app version and setup.

Why does my SmartThings screen look different?
Samsung’s five-section layout—Favorites, Devices, Life, Automations, and Menu—described the redesigned app announced in 2021, not a guaranteed navigation bar for every current Android release. Samsung later described Favorites becoming Home and announced further interface changes, including changes to device browsing.
When an older guide’s tab name does not match your screen, use the labels currently displayed in your app. You can also open Menu → How to use for Samsung’s tutorials. Samsung’s announcements establish broad changes, but not one screen map that applies to every app version and region.
