You can move WhatsApp chats directly between Android phones by scanning a QR code in WhatsApp, provided the app works on both devices. For a Huawei phone running HMS, Huawei says Google Drive WhatsApp backups are unavailable, so the documented options are version-specific Phone Clone procedures or a local backup. The available official guidance does not verify a Huawei Mate 90 or its software, regional variant, or WhatsApp compatibility; check the model and software shown on your actual device before choosing a method.

Transfer chats with WhatsApp’s Android QR method
Use this route if WhatsApp works on the destination and both phones are available. WhatsApp says to start on the new phone and keep the app open on the old phone until the transfer finishes.
- On the new phone, download and open WhatsApp, accept the terms, enter the existing account phone number, and confirm it.
- Connect the phones to local Wi-Fi if WhatsApp prompts you. The phones should both be connected to the internet.
- When WhatsApp displays a QR code on the new phone, use the old phone’s camera in WhatsApp to scan it, then follow the Start Transfer prompt.
- Accept the connection prompt on the old phone. Do not close WhatsApp while the transfer is underway.
- On the new phone, complete two-step verification if enabled, confirm your profile information, and follow the prompts to the Chats tab.
WhatsApp’s account transfer guide says to have both phones with you and connected to the internet. For a move using the same number, move the SIM to the new phone and register that existing number; registering it logs the old phone out. If you are changing numbers, use WhatsApp’s change-number process on the old phone before transferring. Registering the new number directly on the new phone without first changing it can result in lost chat history. If you no longer have access to the old phone or number, recover the account first.

If the Huawei destination uses HMS
Huawei says Google Drive WhatsApp backup does not work on an HMS phone. Do not rely on general Android setup guidance about restoring a WhatsApp cloud backup to override that limitation. Huawei documents Phone Clone and local-backup paths, but their steps depend on the devices’ software versions.

Non-Huawei Android to Huawei HMS on EMUI 12
Huawei Support Portugal’s non-Huawei Android to Huawei HMS WhatsApp guide describes this procedure for EMUI 12:
- Create a WhatsApp chat backup on the old phone.
- Install Phone Clone version 12.0.1.370 or later on both phones.
- Connect the phones in Phone Clone, choose Applications and data, and select WhatsApp.
- Follow WhatsApp’s prompts on the new phone to complete the transfer.
Those version and menu details apply to Huawei’s described EMUI 12 scenario, not automatically to every Huawei phone or current operating-system version. Confirm the software and Phone Clone version on both devices against the instructions for your actual setup.

What Huawei’s general Phone Clone steps cover
Huawei’s global Phone Clone overview says to open Phone Clone on the new device, either directly or through Settings > System & updates > Phone Clone, choose This is the new device, and select Huawei or Other Android. On the old phone, install or open Phone Clone, connect by QR code or manually, select data, and start the transfer. This describes general device migration; it does not establish that WhatsApp chats will transfer for every device and software combination.

Older EMUI and Huawei GMS-to-HMS moves
Huawei’s non-Huawei-to-HMS instructions also cover EMUI 11 or earlier, with a different Phone Clone version requirement: 12.0.0.380 or later. Check Huawei’s version-specific instructions before following that route.

For a Huawei GMS phone moving to Huawei HMS, Huawei describes a local archive method: make a local WhatsApp backup, compress the relevant database and media folders, move and extract the archive on the destination, preserve the appropriate database file, then sign in with the same WhatsApp account and choose Restore when WhatsApp detects the history. Huawei’s GMS-to-HMS instructions are in Portuguese and specify file paths and database suffixes that can vary by app version. Use them only when they match the current devices and WhatsApp prompts; do not treat their file details as universal.
Keep the old phone until you verify the chats
WhatsApp says it cannot restore chat history for users because that history is not stored on its servers. Keep the old phone intact, along with any accessible backup, until you have checked that the destination shows the expected conversations and important media. WhatsApp’s backup and restore troubleshooting page explains this limitation.

Check WhatsApp availability on the exact Huawei device
The available official pages do not establish that a Huawei Mate 90 exists as a supported product, which operating system or regional software it uses, whether it has HMS or GMS, or whether WhatsApp is available and fully functional on it. Verify those details in the device’s settings and confirm that WhatsApp installs and opens before relying on any transfer route.
