There is no single visa for moving to Southampton. Your route depends on your nationality, purpose and length of stay. Check the relevant UK immigration route and secure approval before travelling; then arrange accommodation, confirm how you will prove your right to rent in England, and take care of healthcare and local setup after you arrive.
1. Find the immigration route that fits your move
Start by identifying why you are coming to the UK: for study, sponsored work, family, settlement or another purpose. Your nationality, intended length of stay and personal circumstances also matter. Use the UK government’s visa and ETA checker to find the route that applies to you, then follow that route’s overseas application instructions.
Requirements, fees, processing times and permitted activities vary between routes and can change. Do not assume that a visa suitable for one person will suit another, or that a visa by itself guarantees that you can rent a particular home.
2. Apply from overseas and wait for approval
Complete the identity and application steps for your route and wait for a decision before travelling. UK Visas and Immigration’s overseas guidance, updated on 9 September 2026, states: “You must not travel to the UK before your visa application is approved.” Once approved, follow the current instructions for accessing and using your eVisa or other status evidence. Check those instructions rather than relying on older references to a physical BRP card or visa vignette.

3. Budget for healthcare and the immigration health surcharge
Check the immigration health surcharge rules for your exact route and for each relevant applicant. In general, most people applying from outside the UK for a visa or immigration application lasting longer than six months usually have to pay it, but official exemptions apply. Having private insurance does not, by itself, remove the surcharge obligation when the surcharge is due.

Where required payment has been made, NHS access generally begins on the visa start date. The surcharge does not cover every charge: prescriptions, dental treatment, eye tests and some other services may still cost extra.
4. Choose accommodation and check right to rent
For a private rental in England, the landlord must establish your right to rent before the tenancy starts. Non-British and non-Irish citizens can generally prove it using an eligible share code or original immigration documents. A landlord can use a share code to check whether you can rent and, where applicable, for how long. Arrange access to your UKVI account and use the current official service to get a share code if your status allows it.

Compare the full commitment, not just the headline rent. Confirm what is included, the contract dates, furnishing, location, deposit and other permitted charges, and whether the landlord can complete the right-to-rent check using your available evidence. Ask specifically which utilities are included. GOV.UK guidance accessed in 2026 says a tenancy deposit may be capped at five weeks’ rent for a home with annual rent below £50,000; check the current rule and your particular tenancy before paying.

Student accommodation or a private rental?
| What to compare | University halls or managed student accommodation | Private rental |
|---|---|---|
| Contract dates and length | Check against your course and arrival dates; terms vary by accommodation. | Check the start date, end date and full contract period against your plans. |
| Rent and bills | Check which bills or services are included in the specific offer. | Check each included utility and allow for bills not covered by the rent. |
| Location and move-in readiness | Compare location, furnishings and what is ready on arrival. | Confirm location, furnishing and practical move-in arrangements with the landlord or agent. |
| Right-to-rent evidence | Check the accommodation provider’s process and what evidence it needs. | The landlord must complete the required check before the tenancy. |
5. Set up utilities and register with Southampton
Utilities
For a private tenancy, ask the landlord or agent which gas and electricity suppliers serve the property. On moving in, record any applicable meter readings and tell the suppliers your move-in date and readings so billing can start from the correct date. Do not assume that bills are included unless the contract says so.
Council tax
Register with Southampton City Council after you move in, even if you believe you qualify for an exemption or discount. The council says new residents still need to register if they do not pay council tax; its form asks for tenancy or move-in dates and adult household details. Southampton states that processing a change of address can take up to 21 days.

If you are a student who believes you are exempt, provide evidence to support the exemption and do not ignore a council-tax bill while waiting for it to be addressed.
6. If you are moving to study at the University of Southampton
Use the University’s current before-arrival and welcome instructions for student visa advice, accommodation, enrolment and identity documents. The University recommends that UK and international students register with a local doctor or university health service.
Best Value
The University’s airport meet-and-greet offer is limited to eligible first-time students staying in university halls or a named partner hall. Check the University’s current dates and conditions before relying on it for your arrival plans.

This is a specialist case, not a routine requirement for ordinary renters. Someone sponsoring another person’s entry-clearance or settlement application may need evidence that the proposed accommodation is suitable. Southampton City Council offers a paid inspection and report service for that purpose.
| Southampton Council inspection-report fee listed on its page, accessed 2026 | Amount |
|---|---|
| Initial inspection for one person | £269 |
| Repeat application within 12 months | £189 |
| Each additional person | £93 |
These are fees for that specific council service, not general moving costs. Check the council’s current charges and whether the report is needed for your case before applying.
