To “move” a category, change its parent in the hierarchy; to move posts, change the categories assigned to those posts. Renaming changes the category’s display name, while deleting removes only the category term—not the posts assigned to it.
What “move a category” means in WordPress
WordPress uses categories in a parent-child hierarchy. Moving a category normally means changing its Parent Category, not moving its posts. For example, you can change “Reviews” from a top-level category to a child of “Technology.”
If you instead want particular posts to appear in a different category, edit those posts and change their category assignments. Reparenting a category does not change which posts belong to it.
Move (reparent) a category
- Sign in to WordPress and open Posts → Categories.
- Find the category in the list and select Edit. Use Quick Edit only when the parent field is available in your installation; the full Edit screen exposes all category fields.
- In Parent Category, select the new parent. Choose None to make the category top-level.
- Save the change with Update (or the equivalent save button).
WordPress.org Documentation explains that each category may be assigned to a parent, allowing a hierarchy. After saving, inspect the category list and your menus, widgets, breadcrumbs, and category archive to ensure the new structure is presented as intended.

If you meant to move posts instead
Open the relevant post under Posts → All Posts, edit its category checkboxes, and save the post. For many posts, use the bulk editor where your WordPress installation provides category assignment controls. This changes post membership; it does not change the category hierarchy.
Rename a WordPress category
- Go to Posts → Categories.
- Choose Edit for the category, or use Quick Edit for a faster name or slug change when available.
- Enter the new Name. Category names must remain unique across the site, including categories under different parents.
- Review the Slug separately, then save.
The name is the label readers see. The slug is the URL-friendly identifier; WordPress.org Documentation states that “The Category slug is used in the URL.” A name change does not by itself tell you what should happen to an existing live URL, so check the slug field and your site’s links before changing it.

Should you change the slug?
Keep the existing slug when preserving the current category URL is more important than matching the new name. Change it when the old URL is no longer appropriate, but treat that as a site-maintenance change: update internal links and navigation, and configure a redirect from the old address when your site requires one. WordPress documentation does not establish a universal automatic redirect or a guaranteed search-engine result for every slug change.
Rename versus full Edit and Quick Edit
| Approach | Best for | Fields and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Edit | A fast adjustment from the category list | Typically exposes name and slug, but available fields can vary by WordPress installation. |
| Edit | Reparenting or a complete update | Provides the category name, slug, parent, and optional description. |
Delete a category without deleting posts
Deleting a category does not delete the posts assigned to it. WordPress reassigns those posts to the site’s default category. This behavior is documented by WordPress.org.

Check the consequences first
- In Posts → Categories, review the category’s post-count number or link to identify affected content.
- Open Settings → Writing and check the Default Post Category. If the current fallback is unsuitable, select a useful category and save the settings before deleting.
- Review menus, widgets, navigation, internal links, and the category archive that use the category.
Delete one category
- Return to Posts → Categories.
- Hover over the category and choose Delete.
- Confirm the deletion if WordPress asks.
Delete several categories
- On Posts → Categories, select the checkboxes for the categories to remove.
- Choose Delete from the Bulk actions menu.
- Apply the action and verify the affected posts afterward.
The default category itself cannot be deleted. Change the default under Settings → Writing first if you need to remove the category currently serving as the fallback.
