To move photos to a microSD card, first confirm your Samsung Galaxy model has a card slot. On a compatible device, the most generally documented method is to select the pictures in My Files and move them to a folder on the SD card. You can also use Gallery’s album workflow if your device offers it. Check the destination folder before deleting any originals.

Check whether your Galaxy supports a microSD card

Not every Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet accepts a microSD card. Samsung’s US support page states, “Not all Samsung devices support MicroSD cards.” Check the specifications for your exact model before buying a card or following these steps: Samsung: MicroSD cards and your Galaxy phone or tablet. Samsung’s New Zealand support page notes that Galaxy S21 models do not have an SD slot, but that regional note is not a complete compatibility list for all models: Samsung New Zealand: How to manage files on your Galaxy Phone.

Once you have confirmed compatibility and inserted a card, it should appear as an SD card destination in My Files. Samsung notes that the option appears only when a card is inserted in a supported device. The sources do not establish a universally suitable card capacity, speed class, or brand, so use your model’s specifications to check card requirements.

Move or copy photos with My Files

My Files is the clearest general route for moving image files. Use Move to relocate the selected originals, or Copy to leave the source files where they are as well. Labels and screens can vary by model, software version, and region.

  1. Open My Files. Browse the Images category to locate pictures. For photos taken with the phone’s camera, check Internal storage > DCIM > Camera. Samsung describes both category and folder browsing in its guides: Samsung UK: How to use Samsung My Files App.
  2. Select the images. Touch and hold one image, then select any additional pictures you want to transfer.
  3. Choose Move or Copy. Tap Move to relocate the originals, or Copy to keep them in internal storage too. Samsung’s general file-management instructions describe selecting files and choosing the transfer action: Samsung Canada: Manage and organize files saved on your Samsung Galaxy device.
  4. Choose the SD card destination. Return to My Files Home, tap SD card, then open a destination folder or create one if that option is available. Tap Move here or Copy here to finish.
  5. Verify the transfer. Open the destination folder on the SD card and confirm the images appear there. Do this before deleting any duplicate originals.

Use Gallery’s album route if it is available

Samsung UK documents an alternative that starts in Gallery: create an album with the SD card as its storage location, then move selected images into that album. Menu names and availability can vary, so this route may not appear on every Galaxy device or software version.

  1. Open Gallery and go to Albums.
  2. Open the options menu and choose the option to create an album.
  3. Choose the SD card as the album’s storage location, then create the album.
  4. Return to the pictures, select the images, and move them to the new album.
  5. Open the album and check that the pictures are there.

Samsung provides this album workflow on its UK support page: Samsung UK: How to use SD card with your Samsung phone. Its general My Files guidance separately says that files cannot be transferred directly to other apps such as Gallery through that My Files workflow. These are different routes: use My Files for file-level transfers, and use Gallery’s album option only if your device offers it. Troubleshoot a missing card or hard-to-find photos

  • SD card is not listed in My Files: Check that your exact model supports microSD and that the card is inserted. The SD card destination appears only on a supported device with a card inserted.
  • You cannot find the camera pictures: In My Files, try Images or browse to Internal storage > DCIM > Camera.
  • You want new photos saved to the card: This is a separate setting from moving existing images. Some apps offer a storage-location option, but Samsung says it is not possible to make everything on the device save to the SD card. Check the relevant app’s settings and confirm where new pictures are being saved.

Keep another copy if the photos matter

Moving files to a card changes where they are stored; it does not by itself create a second copy. If you need a backup, keep another copy in a separate location. If you chose Copy, verify that the card copy is present before changing or deleting the source files.
