To move Microsoft Office to a new Mac, install Office on the new computer from Microsoft’s account page, then open an Office app and sign in with the account tied to your license. First check whether your copy is a Microsoft 365 subscription or a one-time purchase: the transfer rules for the old Mac differ.
Before you move Office, identify the license and account
Check which license you have and which Microsoft account is linked to it. A personal Microsoft account may be used for a personal license; a work or school license usually requires the account assigned by your organization.
- Microsoft 365: Office is activated through the account that has the subscription.
- One-time purchase: Transfer eligibility depends on the license terms for that specific edition and purchase.
If you have an unredeemed product key, redeem it once and link it to the correct Microsoft account. After redemption, use that account for later downloads and activation rather than trying to reuse the key. See Microsoft’s product-key instructions.

- Check compatibility. Review the system requirements for your macOS version on Microsoft’s Office installation page.
- Download the installer. Sign in to Microsoft’s account page with the account associated with your license, then choose the option to install Microsoft 365 or Office.
- Run the installer. Open the downloaded
.pkgfile and follow the prompts. Enter the Mac administrator password if requested. - Open an Office app. When installation finishes, launch Word, Excel, or another Office app.
Activate Office on the new Mac
In the first-run setup, select Get Started and sign in with the account connected to the license. Microsoft checks the account’s entitlement and activates Office. If this is a work or school license, use the organization-assigned account. Microsoft’s Office for Mac activation instructions cover the sign-in flow.

What to do with Office on the old Mac
If you have Microsoft 365
Microsoft 365 sign-in management is designed to keep use within the account’s device limit. Microsoft currently states a five-device sign-in limit for Office apps; this is a Microsoft licensing rule, not permission to share an account beyond its terms. Microsoft also says it automatically manages sign-ins, so remote sign-out may not be necessary just to make room for the new Mac.
If you do need to sign out remotely, use Microsoft’s deactivation instructions. Signing out does not uninstall Office from the old Mac, delete documents, or cancel the subscription.

If you have a one-time purchase
Do not assume every one-time purchase can be transferred. Microsoft says eligible purchases may be moved subject to their specific Software License Terms; its guidance may require uninstalling Office from the original computer and completing phone activation. Check the terms and instructions for your exact edition and circumstances before removing Office from the old Mac. See Microsoft’s guidance for installing on a different device.

If Office does not activate
Check the account first
Confirm that you signed in with the account that owns the subscription or has the redeemed purchase linked to it. For a work or school license, verify that you are using the account assigned by your organization.

If Office keeps asking you to activate
If the app shows that it is activated but continues prompting, quit and reopen the Office app. Microsoft’s Office for Mac activation troubleshooting includes further steps for recurring prompts and account or credential problems.
Use license removal only for a relevant license conflict
Microsoft provides a license-removal tool for Mac problems such as an incorrect license being selected or an old one-time license conflicting with a subscription. It removes Office license files from that Mac; it is not the normal first step in moving Office. Make sure you have the correct account credentials available so you can activate again. Follow Microsoft’s license-removal instructions only when appropriate.

Office licensing is separate from moving your files
Installing and activating Office does not move your documents, and copying files to the new Mac does not transfer an Office license. Move personal files separately using the method that suits your setup; then install Office and activate it through Microsoft as described above. No physical transfer accessory is required for Microsoft’s Office installation and activation process.
