To move data from a Samsung phone to an iPhone, use Apple’s Move to iOS app during the iPhone’s initial setup. The iPhone must be new or erased for this guided transfer. Move to iOS can bring over many everyday items, including contacts, messages, photos, videos, calendars, call history, and WhatsApp messages and media. Music, books, and PDFs need to be moved separately.
Before you start: check setup, storage, and connections
Apple’s Move to iOS transfer is part of iPhone setup. If you have already completed setup, Apple says you need to erase the iPhone and start over to use this in-setup transfer. If you do not want to erase it, choose manual transfer instead; Apple’s instructions cover alternatives after setup.
Before beginning, make sure the iPhone has enough available storage for the content you plan to move, including content stored on a Samsung microSD card. Turn on Wi-Fi on the Samsung phone and connect both devices to power. If you want to bring over web bookmarks, update Chrome on Android first.

The cable is optional: check the ports and compatibility of your particular Samsung and iPhone models before buying one. Transfer your Samsung data with Move to iOS
- Start iPhone setup. Turn on the new or erased iPhone and follow the setup prompts until you reach the option to transfer data from Android.
- Open Move to iOS on Samsung. Follow the app’s prompts, then enter the one-time code shown on the iPhone.
- Connect the phones. If transferring wirelessly, join the temporary Wi-Fi network created by the iPhone when prompted.
- Choose what to move. Select the data categories you want on the Samsung phone and begin the transfer.
- Wait for the iPhone progress bar. Keep both phones near each other and connected to power. Leave Move to iOS open on the Samsung phone; do not switch apps or answer a call there before the iPhone’s progress bar finishes.
- Complete iPhone setup and check your content. Follow the remaining setup prompts, then confirm that the items you selected arrived. Download the apps you need from the App Store and move unsupported content manually.
The transfer time depends on how much content you move. Apple does not specify a typical duration, so let the iPhone’s progress bar finish rather than relying on a time estimate or an early completion message on Android.
What moves automatically—and what needs attention
Apple lists these data types as transferable through Move to iOS. The exact set that arrives depends on what you select and what your devices support.

Some free apps may be matched if they are available in both Google Play and the App Store and support the transfer feature. Matching is not a guarantee that every Android app will appear on iPhone; download available apps from the App Store after setup.
Music, books, and PDFs are not included in the guided transfer. Apple Support’s instruction is direct: “Music, books, and PDFs need to be moved over manually.” Plan to move those items separately using a method appropriate to where they are stored.

Does Samsung Smart Switch transfer to iPhone?
No. Samsung says Smart Switch transfers content from Android and iOS devices to Galaxy phones and tablets, and that content cannot be transferred to an iOS device. For a Samsung-to-iPhone move, use Apple’s Move to iOS flow during iPhone setup instead. Samsung’s Smart Switch support page explains the direction the tool supports.

During the move, you may be able to activate your phone number and SIM or eSIM on the iPhone. Apple says you may instead be directed to your carrier’s website to complete activation. Whether the option is available depends on your carrier, device, and region; follow the instructions shown during setup or contact your carrier if activation does not complete.

Fix common Move to iOS problems
- The transfer will not connect: Turn off Android apps or settings that affect Wi-Fi, forget known Wi-Fi networks, restart both phones, and turn off cellular data on Android. Then try the setup transfer again.
- The transfer stops or content is missing: Keep Move to iOS in the foreground on Android and avoid answering calls or opening other apps until the iPhone progress bar finishes. Check the iPhone’s available space against the amount of content you selected.
- The Samsung phone says it finished, but the iPhone is still working: Wait for the iPhone progress bar to complete. Apple cautions that the transfer is not finished until that bar reaches the end.
- You already finished iPhone setup: To use Move to iOS, erase the iPhone and restart setup. If you do not want to erase it, use Apple’s manual-transfer guidance instead.
