To move your apps, photos, and settings to a new iPad, use Quick Start from a nearby iPhone or iPad, restore an iCloud backup, or restore a computer backup in Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes. If your old device is Android, use Move to iOS during the new iPad’s initial setup. The right option depends on which device or backup you have, whether the iPad has already been set up, and whether you can leave the devices connected while data transfers.
Choose the transfer method that fits your situation
| Method | Best when | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Start: direct transfer | Your old iPhone or iPad is available, and you can leave both devices together. | Apple says the old device needs iOS 11 or iPadOS 13 or later. Both devices remain occupied until migration finishes; keep them nearby and plugged in. |
| Quick Start: download from iCloud | You have a usable iCloud backup and want to start using the new iPad sooner. | Apps and data can download in the background. Keep the iPad connected to Wi-Fi and power so the downloads can continue. |
| Restore from iCloud backup | The old device is unavailable, or you prefer to restore a saved backup. | Sign in to the Apple Account associated with the backup, select the correct backup by date and size, and stay connected while restoration and later downloads finish. |
| Restore from a computer backup | You have a backup in Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes. | Connect the iPad to the computer by USB and choose the appropriate backup. An encrypted backup requires its password; an unencrypted one does not transfer Health and Activity data from an iOS device or Apple Watch. |
| Move to iOS | Your old device is Android and the iPad is at initial setup. | Choose the Android transfer option during setup and follow the app prompts. If setup is complete, Apple’s documented flow requires erasing the iPad and starting over, or moving content manually. |
Prepare before transferring
- Make sure the old device or intended backup is available, and have the Apple Account password ready.
- For Quick Start, connect the old device to Wi-Fi, turn on Bluetooth, unlock it, and place it beside the new iPad.
- Plan for power and enough time. Apple does not give a fixed completion time: “Transfer times can vary based on factors such as network conditions and the amount of data being transferred.”
- If you lack enough iCloud space, check whether your new iPad is eligible for Apple’s temporary backup storage. Apple’s iPad setup guide says it is available for up to three weeks.
- Check what is already on the new iPad before erasing it. Erasing removes its contents.
Transfer directly with Quick Start
- Turn on the new iPad and place it near the old iPhone or iPad. Make sure the old device is unlocked, connected to Wi-Fi, and has Bluetooth turned on.
- Follow the Quick Start prompt on the old device and the on-screen instructions on the new iPad.
- When asked how to transfer, choose direct transfer to migrate from the old device, or choose the iCloud download option if you want apps and data to download in the background.
- Keep the devices near each other and connected to power until direct migration is complete. For an iCloud download, keep the new iPad on Wi-Fi and power while content continues downloading.
If the Quick Start prompt disappears, Apple suggests restarting both devices and trying again. Direct transfer keeps both devices occupied until it finishes; an iCloud download lets you use the new iPad sooner while apps and data continue downloading.
Restore an iCloud backup
The new iPad needs to be at the Hello/setup flow for Apple’s documented backup restore. If you have already completed setup, the restore flow requires erasing the iPad first; check and preserve anything you need from it before doing so.
- Start iPad setup and continue until you reach the Apps & Data screen.
- Choose the option to restore from an iCloud backup and sign in to the Apple Account used for that backup.
- Choose the intended backup, checking its date and size to distinguish it from other backups.
- Keep the iPad connected to Wi-Fi and power as the restore runs. Photos, music, and apps stored in iCloud may download after setup.
Restore a backup from a computer
This route requires a computer containing the backup and a USB data cable compatible with both the iPad and computer. Check the ports on both devices before connecting; a cable is not needed for Quick Start or an iCloud restore.

Move content from Android
Use Apple’s Move to iOS route while the iPad is going through initial setup: select the Android transfer option and follow the prompts in the app. If you already finished iPad setup, Apple’s documented choices are to erase the iPad and start the setup flow again, or move content manually; this transfer flow is not a post-setup restore.
What to expect after setup
Completing setup does not necessarily mean every item has finished downloading. With an iCloud restore or Quick Start’s iCloud option, apps and other iCloud content can continue downloading in the background. Keep the iPad on Wi-Fi and connected to power while that work completes. Transfer time varies with network conditions and the amount of data being moved.
