Use the Motorola phone’s Android setup transfer—not Samsung Smart Switch—to copy data from a working Galaxy. During setup, choose to copy from an old Android phone or an available Google-account backup, then select the data you want. Motorola lists apps and app data, photos and videos, text messages and attachments, contacts, music, settings, wallpaper, and call history among the items that may transfer; the exact selection depends on the phones and what you choose.
Before you start
- Charge both phones and connect them to Wi-Fi.
- Keep the Samsung nearby and available throughout the transfer.
- Know the Google account associated with the backup or setup flow you plan to use.
- Do not erase or trade in the Samsung until you have checked the Motorola for important apps, photos, and message threads.
Motorola’s Android-to-Android copy guide describes the supported categories and exclusions. The available choices can vary by phone, data type, and selection. For a model-specific example, Motorola’s moto g 2026 guide describes the setup flow on that device.
Transfer data during Motorola setup
- Start the Motorola’s setup. Turn on the new phone and proceed through its initial setup screens. Connect it to Wi-Fi when prompted.
- Choose the Android copy option. When asked whether to copy apps and data, select the option to copy from an old Android phone. If the Samsung is unavailable, choose the offered restore option for an associated Google-account backup.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. Keep both phones on and follow the prompts to connect or identify the old phone. Choose the categories you want to transfer. Motorola says SIM setup can be skipped if needed.
- Keep the backup option enabled if offered. Leave Google Drive backup enabled when the setup flow presents it, and allow the copy process to finish.
- Check the Motorola before retiring the Samsung. Open important apps, review key message threads and attachments, and confirm that the photos and contacts you need are present.
Motorola’s transfer flow can include apps and app data, photos and videos, music, Google accounts, phone or SIM contacts, text messages, message attachments, most settings, wallpaper, and call history. That list is not a promise that every item or every app’s private data will transfer: what appears depends on the devices and the choices made during setup.
What may not transfer
Motorola specifically identifies several categories that its described copy flow does not transfer. Plan to handle these separately if they matter:

- Downloads such as PDFs
- Apps installed outside the Play Store
- Accounts other than Google
- Contacts or calendars associated with non-Google services
- Ringtones
Some apps may also require you to sign in again or use the app’s own restore method for its data. A copied app does not guarantee that all of its settings, credentials, or locally stored information will be restored.
Can you use Samsung Smart Switch?
Samsung’s Smart Switch instructions describe transferring content to Galaxy phones and tablets, with supported items depending on the connected device. They do not establish Smart Switch as the receiving workflow for a Motorola phone. For this move, start the transfer on the Motorola and follow its Android setup copy instructions.

If you skipped the transfer during setup
You may be able to resume the process from an Android Setup notification or an option such as “Finish setting up your device.” The exact label and location vary by Motorola model and software version. Open the setup continuation option and follow its prompts to copy data from the Samsung or restore from an available Google backup.

If the Samsung is broken or unavailable
Motorola says you can copy files using a cloud backup associated with your Google account. Sign in to the account during Motorola setup and choose the offered restore option. A backup is not necessarily a complete copy of everything stored locally on the Galaxy or in private app data, so check what appears on the new phone. Accounts for other services may need separate sign-ins.

Check the result and resolve common gaps
Messages or attachments are missing
Check the messaging app on the Motorola and confirm that the transfer included messages and attachments where those choices were offered. If a particular conversation or attachment is absent, keep the Samsung intact while you investigate whether it remains available there or whether the messaging app offers its own restore method.
Apps appear, but their data does not
Open the app and sign in again if requested. Some services store data in their own accounts or require an app-specific restore process; Motorola’s general copy list does not guarantee a complete restore for every app.

Contacts are duplicated
Review the contact list after migration and merge duplicates where appropriate. Motorola’s model-specific guidance advises merging duplicate contacts after a transfer.

Motorola’s normal setup instructions do not establish a cable, OTG adapter, microSD card, or USB drive as necessary for this transfer. Before using one, confirm compatibility with the exact Motorola model and the specific transfer method. Samsung’s wired and external-storage Smart Switch instructions are for transfers to a Galaxy destination, not directions for receiving data on a Motorola.
