You can usually move photos and ordinary files to a microSD card on a Lenovo tablet, but moving an installed app depends on the tablet’s Android version, storage mode, and the app itself. First check that your tablet has a card slot and decide whether you want a portable card for files or expanded internal storage for apps.
Before you start: check the tablet and choose a storage mode
- Find the model and Android version in Settings → About tablet. Labels can vary by model.
- Confirm the tablet has a microSD card slot and check Lenovo’s specifications or support information for that exact model to verify card capacity and storage-mode support.
- Back up anything already on the card before formatting or changing its storage mode. Google warns that formatting permanently deletes the card’s data: Get started with an SD card.
Android distinguishes between two ways to use a card. Portable storage is suited to files such as photos and videos and can be moved between devices; Android says apps cannot be installed on it. Internal (adoptable) storage can hold files and apps when the tablet offers that mode, but the card is formatted for use with that device and cannot be transferred to another device as portable storage. See Google’s SD-card setup guide for the distinction.
| What you need | Portable storage | Internal/adoptable storage |
|---|---|---|
| Store photos and ordinary files | Yes | Yes |
| Install apps on the card | No, according to Android guidance | Supported on devices that offer this mode; moving a particular installed app remains conditional |
| Move the card to another device and use it as-is | Yes | No |
| Format or change the card’s storage mode | Formatting erases card data | Formatting erases card data |
Move downloads and other files
For ordinary files such as PDFs, documents, or downloads saved in shared storage, use a file manager. The following steps apply to Files by Google on Android 8.0 and newer; they depend on the app being installed and the tablet recognizing the card.

- Select the file or files you want to move.
- Tap More → Move to.
- Choose SD card, then select a destination folder or create one and confirm the move.
Google’s instructions are under Move or copy files to your SD card. If a file manager does not show the card, check whether Android recognizes it in Settings and whether the card is configured as internal rather than portable storage.
#1 Best Overall
- EXPAND YOUR STORAGE. Insert your card to add massive storage up to 1.5TB[1] to your Android smartphones and tablets, digital cameras, and laptops.
- SPACE FOR MORE. With expansive capacities up to 1.5TB[1], capture and store hours of Full HD video[4], movies, music, games, photos, and podcasts.
- MOVE FILES FAST. Use your card with the SANDISK QuickFlow microSD UHS-I Card USB-A Reader[6] to achieve up to 195MB/s[2] read speeds [128GB-1.5TB models] and offload your content fast.
- LOAD APPS IN A SNAP. Rated A1[3], the SANDISK Ultra microSD card is optimized for faster app launch and overall app performance.
- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
“Downloads” can also mean offline films, music, or other content stored inside a streaming or media app. Those downloads may be managed privately by that app, so use its own download or storage settings when available. Google notes that content downloaded from services should be managed in the app used to download it; moving a file visible in Files does not mean an app’s private offline content can be relocated.
Move photos and videos
If Google Gallery is available and the tablet has an SD-card slot, you can move selected media to the card:
Rank #2
- Expand your storage in a flash: ideal for Android smartphones and tablets, Chromebooks, and Windows laptops.
- Up to 140MB/s transfer speeds to move up to 1000 photos per minute
- Load apps faster with A1-rated performance
- View, access, and back up your phone’s files in one location with the SanDisk Memory Zone app
- Relax knowing your card is backed by a 10-year limited warranty by SanDisk
- Open Gallery and select one or more photos or videos.
- Tap More → Move to folder.
- Allow Gallery to access the SD card if prompted.
- Choose a folder on the SD card and confirm.
See Google’s Move photos to an SD card instructions. The app and menu labels can differ across tablets and Android versions.

Check the app’s own storage details before expecting it to move. On some tablets, open Settings → Apps, select the app, then look under Storage for an option such as Change or Move. If no such option appears, the tablet or app may not support relocation.
Rank #3
- Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
- Expand your storage in a flash: ideal for Android smartphones and tablets, Chromebooks, and Windows laptops.
- Increase your TV show, movie, and Full HD video[4] recording collections dramatically with up to a massive 1.5TB[1].
- Transfer files fast with up to 150MB/s[2] read speeds and SanDisk MobileMate USB micro 3.0 microSD card reader[6].
- Load apps faster with A1-rated performance[3].
Lenovo’s Android 6.0 smartphone guidance gives this historical example: Settings → Storage & USB → Internal storage → Apps → [app] → Change → SD card → Move. Treat it as an example, not a universal Lenovo tablet path: the article is for phones and says app eligibility varies. Lenovo’s wording is, “Not all of the Android apps support the ability to be moved from internal to external storage.” See Lenovo’s Android 6.0 app-move guidance.
Android’s general guidance says apps can be installed on internal/adoptable storage, while portable storage does not support app installation. That does not mean every tablet offers adoptable storage or that every installed app can be moved. If your tablet does not show an app-move option, do not assume that changing the card format will make that app movable.

If the steps do not match or the card is missing
- No SD-card destination in Files or Gallery: Confirm the tablet has a physical slot and that Settings recognizes the card. If the card is adopted as internal storage, it may not appear as a portable destination in every file manager.
- No Change or Move option for an app: App relocation is not guaranteed; Lenovo says it depends on app support.
- Different Settings labels: Lenovo’s cited procedures are version-specific smartphone examples, not current universal tablet instructions. Check the support information for your exact model and Android version.
- Changing between portable and internal storage: Copy the card’s contents elsewhere first; formatting deletes its data.
