A school can move students from Chromebooks to iPads without losing work by first finding where the files are stored, copying Chromebook-only files to a district-approved destination, verifying the copies, and delaying Chromebook resets until that verification is complete. Google Drive sync makes synced files available on other devices, but it does not cover every file saved locally or inside an app. Apple School Manager, MDM enrollment, and Google account federation help deploy and sign in to iPads; they do not transfer student files.
Where student files may be stored
A Chromebook is not a single storage location. Student work may be in Google Drive, another cloud service, the Downloads folder, camera storage, browser downloads, or an app’s own storage. Google explains that Drive syncing moves files between device storage and cloud Drive, where synced files are then available on the user’s other devices: Google Drive file syncing on Chromebook. That applies to synced files, not files that remain only on the Chromebook.
Before choosing a migration method, ask teachers which save locations and classroom apps students actually use. Also establish which Google accounts will remain school-managed and how students retain access to their work when they leave the district.
Choose a district-controlled destination
If the school will continue using Google Workspace, Google documents an Admin console setting that can migrate existing local Chromebook files to Google Drive. Google recommends Drive for this setting; the administrator’s configuration and permissions determine what is available. See Google Admin guidance for migrating local files to Drive.

Choose a destination based on more than convenience. The school should consider who owns and can access student work, how long it must be retained, whether teachers and students can use it on managed iPads, and what happens to access after graduation. If students need to copy selected content from a managed account to a personal Google account, Google’s Content transfer workflow is separate and requires the relevant administrator permissions. Google says a transfer may take up to a week; it is not a substitute for a school-wide migration plan: Transfer content from a school account to a personal Google account.
Move local files and verify them before resetting Chromebooks
Google cautions that local-file migration may not finish for every file. Completion depends on available cloud storage and network connectivity, so treat the administrator setting as a migration aid—not proof that every device has been cleared of student work. Pilot it with representative students, grades, Chromebook models, and file types before expanding the process.

- Inventory: Identify the locations students use, including Drive, Downloads, camera files, browser downloads, other cloud services, and app-specific storage.
- Set the destination: Configure the school-approved destination and the relevant Google Admin local-file migration policy.
- Run a pilot: Migrate a representative sample, including accounts and file types used in real class workflows.
- Validate copies: Confirm files appear in the intended destination, open correctly, retain useful names and folder structure, and are accessible to the correct student and teacher accounts.
- Review what remains: Inspect Chromebook-local folders and arrange manual copying or another recovery path for files that did not move.
- Get sign-off: Have the data owner or migration lead approve the verified copies and disposition of remaining local files before any device is reset.
Google states that wiping a ChromeOS device removes unsynced data stored on the device, including examples such as photos and downloaded files. Do not wipe, reassign, or retire a Chromebook until verification and sign-off are complete: Google guidance on wiping ChromeOS devices.
Prepare managed iPads separately from file migration
Apple School Manager lets administrators assign organization devices to an MDM service and automatically enroll qualifying organization-purchased devices. MDM handles device configuration and management; it does not copy Chromebook files. Apple describes the deployment process in Apple’s device enrollment guide.

Apple also documents Google Workspace federation, which can let students use their Google Workspace usernames and passwords to sign in to assigned Apple devices and Shared iPad. Federation is an identity and sign-in arrangement, not a data-transfer method, and Apple says it does not write data back to Google Workspace. Apple’s documented guidance requires iPadOS 15.5 or later and has domain and account prerequisites; confirm current requirements during implementation: Apple School Manager federated authentication.
Coordinate the MDM, identity, and Google Workspace administrators. Test the exact managed iPad setup with representative student accounts, checking Drive access, classroom apps, permissions, offline use, and account sign-out behavior. Treat a successful Google sign-in as a separate result from a successful file migration.

Decide what the school should retain in Google Drive
There is no universal destination that fits every district. Compare the practical consequences before moving or reorganizing student work:
- Ownership and access: Decide who controls schoolwork and how students, teachers, and graduates can access it.
- Compatibility: Check whether the file types and classroom apps students need work on the managed iPad setup.
- Capacity and connectivity: Confirm there is room in the destination and a workable network path for migration and classroom use.
- Privacy and retention: Check district rules for administrator controls, retention, and student data handling.
- Local-only data: Define how staff will identify and recover files that were never synced or that remain after migration.
The choice between keeping Drive as the primary file home and copying selected content elsewhere depends on those district requirements; the migration workflow itself does not determine the right policy.
