To monitor YouTube stream health, retrieve the liveStream resource bound to your broadcast and inspect two separate fields: status.streamStatus for ingestion state and status.healthStatus for YouTube’s configuration-health assessment. Read healthStatus.configurationIssues[] to see what needs attention, and check lastUpdateTimeSeconds to judge how recent that assessment is. An active stream is receiving data; it is not, by itself, proof that the stream has no health issues.

Understand which YouTube resource to monitor

A liveStream represents the audio-video feed sent to YouTube. A liveBroadcast represents the event viewers watch. The broadcast is bound to a stream, so a monitor should identify the broadcast and then inspect its associated stream resource. See Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API overview and LiveBroadcasts reference.

The stream resource is where YouTube documents the ingestion and health fields. Its status object includes both streamStatus and healthStatus. Treat them as distinct signals rather than collapsing them into a single “live/healthy” indicator. Google describes the health object as information that “could be used to identify, diagnose, and resolve streaming problems” in the LiveStreams reference.

Read stream state and configuration health separately

Signal Field What it tells you Documented values or meaning
Ingestion state status.streamStatus Whether YouTube is receiving data and the stream’s current state. active, created, error, inactive, or ready.
Configuration health summary status.healthStatus.status Severity summary for the stream’s health assessment, or whether health information is unavailable. good, ok, bad, or noData.
Diagnostic detail status.healthStatus.configurationIssues[] Individual issues and the information needed to interpret them. Each issue can include a type, severity, reason, and description.
Assessment recency status.healthStatus.lastUpdateTimeSeconds When YouTube last updated its health assessment. Unix timestamp in seconds.

These field definitions and values are documented in Google’s LiveStreams resource reference. In particular, active means YouTube is receiving data. It does not mean that YouTube has assessed the configuration as issue-free.

Interpret the health summary and its issues

Use the summary as a severity signal

  • good: there are no issues at warning severity or worse.
  • ok: there are no error-severity issues, though warnings may still exist.
  • bad: one or more error-severity issues exist.
  • noData: YouTube’s backend has no health information for the stream.

The issue severity values are info, warning, and error. Google defines informational issues as having no adverse performance effect, warnings as indicating performance is not optimal, and errors as indicating the video cannot be broadcast to viewers. The summary helps triage; the issue objects explain what to investigate.

Inspect the issue object before choosing a fix

For each entry in configurationIssues[], surface the type, severity, reason, and description in the operator view or logs. Use those details rather than mapping every warning or error to the same generic response. Google’s Configuration Issues reference provides explanations and corrective context by issue type.

A useful monitor should present the issue description and direct the operator to check whether the encoder is producing a steady video feed, rather than reporting only “bad.”

Build a practical monitoring workflow

  1. Identify the event. Start with the relevant liveBroadcast and determine which liveStream is bound to it. Keep the broadcast ID and stream ID associated in your monitoring data.
  2. Retrieve the stream resource. Request the liveStream representation and include the status information your application needs. The resource’s status contains ingestion state and health information; consult the LiveStreams reference for the current resource representation.
  3. Report independent signals. Show streamStatus and healthStatus.status as separate fields. For example, an active stream with a warning should remain visibly active while also showing that performance is not optimal.
  4. Show issue-level diagnostics. When issues are present, display their type, severity, reason, and description. Preserve the detailed description so an operator can distinguish an informational note from a condition that prevents viewers from receiving the video.
  5. Show health-data recency. Convert lastUpdateTimeSeconds from Unix seconds to a readable timestamp and label it as the time YouTube last updated the assessment. Do not present an old health assessment as if it were a live measurement.
  6. Keep unavailable data distinct from a healthy result. If the health status is noData, report that YouTube has no backend health information; do not relabel it as good.

The cited API guidance defines these fields but does not establish a universal polling cadence or a production quota budget. Choose request frequency and quota handling based on your application’s needs and the current API quota documentation; do not infer an interval from the broadcast lifecycle example.

Keep the broadcaster preview separate from API health

The broadcast’s monitorStream is a broadcaster-facing preview feature for reviewing event content. It is not a substitute for the stream resource’s healthStatus or streamStatus. The LiveBroadcasts reference documents the broadcast resource, while Google’s Life of a Broadcast guide describes the lifecycle.

For the documented testing transition, the lifecycle guide says to verify that the bound stream’s streamStatus is active before transitioning the broadcast to testing. That transition may take several seconds or up to a minute in the guide’s example; this is not a universal monitoring interval. Use the preview when a broadcaster needs to review content, and use the stream status and health fields for programmatic monitoring.
