For a few channels, subscribe on YouTube, check the Subscriptions feed, and set the bell to All if you want more alerts. For a larger public-channel watchlist—or for tracking changes to titles and descriptions—use the YouTube Data API to check uploads and save metadata snapshots for comparison. YouTube notifications can be limited or omitted, while API polling only shows what the API returns when you check.
Choose the right monitoring method
| Need | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| A handful of channels and simple upload alerts | YouTube subscriptions, the Subscriptions feed, and channel notifications | Quick setup, but notifications are personalized and not a complete upload log. |
| A repeatable watchlist across many public channels | YouTube Data API polling | You control the schedule and can compare results, subject to quota and the data returned at each check. |
| Changes to a video’s title, description, or other returned fields | API snapshots plus your own comparison logic | You can detect differences between saved snapshots, but this is not a dedicated YouTube change-alert feed or a complete revision history. |
Get upload alerts from YouTube
- Open YouTube and sign in.
- Open the channel you want to follow and select Subscribe. YouTube says new videos from subscribed channels appear in the Subscriptions feed. See YouTube’s subscription instructions.
- Select the bell next to Subscribed. The default is Personalized; choose All for more notification alerts. Notification delivery may be by mobile, web, or inbox depending on your settings and device. See YouTube’s notification settings guide.
- Check the Subscriptions feed when you want to review recent uploads rather than rely only on alerts.
Why an alert may not arrive
Even with All selected, YouTube does not promise a notification for every upload. Its Help page says not every new upload results in a notification, and channels marked Made for Kids do not send notifications. YouTube also limits notification volume: “Limiting notifications to 3 new video notifications per channel per 24-hour period helps keep viewers active on YouTube long-term.” That is YouTube’s stated limit, not a promise that you will receive exactly three alerts. See YouTube Help’s subscriber notification troubleshooting.
Monitor multiple channels with the YouTube Data API
The documented route is to read a channel’s uploads playlist ID from its channel resource, then list items in that playlist. Store video IDs you have already seen so that later checks can identify newly observed uploads. The API documents retrieval; deciding when to poll, saving state, and deduplicating results are implementation choices.
1. Set up a project and API access
Enable the YouTube Data API for a Google Cloud project and obtain credentials appropriate to your application. Consult Google’s YouTube Data API overview for project setup and current authentication guidance. For public channel and video data, use the API’s documented request methods and follow its current credential requirements.

- NEW: Playlist Download with one click - NEW: Customize the audio quality
- NEW: Direct download as MP3
- NEW: Support for multiple audio tracks
- High-speed downloads in up to 4K and 8K quality
2. Find a channel’s uploads playlist
Call channels.list with the channel ID and request contentDetails. The response includes contentDetails.relatedPlaylists.uploads, the playlist ID for uploads. The channels.list reference documents the method and fields.
For example, a request has this shape (replace the placeholders with your API key and channel ID):

- Download files by entering their URL or Short Code.
- Built-in Web Browser with support for file downloads.
- On Fire TVs, navigate websites using just your remote. (No mouse/keyboard needed.)
- The browser features full-screen mode, zooming, text resizing, and quick access to favorites/bookmarks.
- Favorites allow you to easily save and open frequently visited URLs.

3. List upload items and deduplicate video IDs
Pass the uploads playlist ID to playlistItems.list, requesting the fields you need. The response represents videos in the playlist; retain each returned video ID and compare it with IDs saved from previous runs. A video ID not in your stored set is newly observed by your monitor, not necessarily newly published at that exact moment. See the playlistItems.list reference.

Playlist listing is paginated. Follow nextPageToken when you need more items than the current page returns. For routine monitoring, save the latest observed IDs and use an overlap window—re-read some recent items on the next run—so a delayed run or ordering change does not make the monitor depend on a single boundary item.

4. Poll on a schedule that fits your freshness and quota needs
Schedule checks at an interval that balances how quickly you need to notice an upload against the calls your project can make. Polling is not real time: an upload can occur between checks, and a poll only observes the API response at its time. Keep a per-channel checkpoint or recent-ID set so each run does not need to rebuild the full history.
5. Save metadata snapshots to detect edits
To track observable changes, retrieve video details with videos.list, save the fields relevant to your use case, and compare each new response with the saved baseline. The documented snippet fields include channelId, title, description, tags, and categoryId. See the videos.list reference.

This snapshot-and-diff approach is an implementation inference from the fields the API returns, not a YouTube change notification service. It detects differences between the snapshots you retain; it cannot reveal an intermediate edit that was changed back between polls, or guarantee a complete history of prior metadata.

Google’s YouTube Data API overview states a default allocation of 10,000 quota units per day combined for most endpoints. It treats search.list and videos.insert separately, so do not apply that figure indiscriminately to those methods. The channels.list and playlistItems.list reference pages each list a one-unit quota impact per call. These are Google’s documented figures; checked October 4, 2026. Confirm the allocation for your own project and recheck current documentation before choosing polling frequency, because API quotas and details can change. Best Value
- Search, browse and play thousands of videos.
Estimate calls across all monitored channels, not just one run: each channel lookup, playlist page, and video-detail request contributes to usage according to the relevant method. Cache a channel’s uploads playlist ID rather than looking it up on every poll, and fetch only the pages and video details your workflow needs.

- No YouTube alert arrived: Check the channel bell setting, device and account notification settings, and the Subscriptions feed. Personalized alerts are not exhaustive, and some uploads do not trigger alerts.
- The API request is unauthorized or rejected: Verify that the API is enabled for the project, the credential is valid for the request, and required parameters are present. Compare the request with the current method reference and setup guide.
- A channel lookup returns no uploads playlist: Confirm that the channel ID is correct and inspect the response and requested parts. Use the channel resource’s documented
contentDetails.relatedPlaylists.uploadsfield rather than guessing a playlist ID. - Your monitor misses or repeats videos: Persist IDs between runs, account for pagination, and retain an overlap of recent items when checking again. Make processing idempotent so seeing the same ID twice does not create a duplicate alert.
- Quota is exhausted: Count calls across channels and pages, reduce unnecessary lookups or polling frequency, and check the project’s current quota allocation and usage.
- A title or description edit was not recorded: A change can only be detected if it differs from a snapshot you saved and is visible when you poll. Increase polling frequency if fresher detection matters, while accounting for quota; polling still cannot reconstruct edits between checks.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture channel or video pages for a monitoring workflow, you can request a screenshot directly instead of managing a browser. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server: its consent handling removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. AI agents can use its MCP server for screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. See ScreenshotNeo and the API documentation.
