To monitor your brand’s mentions in ChatGPT, run a fixed set of realistic customer questions on a schedule and record the exact prompt, answer, brand and competitor mentions, citations, and search conditions. Treat the results as a sample, not a complete measure of everything ChatGPT says. Track referral visits separately: a mention is not a website visit, and a visit is not a count of mentions.

Choose what “a mention” means

Before collecting results, decide what your report counts. A literal brand or product name, a recommendation, and a cited link are different signals. Write down which count you intend to report and apply the same rule each time.

  • List the brand name, product names, common variants, misspellings, and relevant parent or sub-brand names.
  • Decide whether a mention requires the name to appear in the answer, whether recommendations are labeled separately, and whether a citation counts only when it links to your site.
  • Track citations independently from answer mentions. A cited page may be relevant without naming the brand in the response, and a response can name the brand without citing its site.

Build a repeatable prompt set

Use questions in the language your customers actually use. Draw them from sales conversations, support tickets, reviews, search queries, and community questions. Include more than brand-name searches so you can see whether ChatGPT surfaces the brand during category discovery as well as when asked about it directly.

  • Category discovery: “What are the best [category] options for [use case]?”
  • Comparison: “How does [brand] compare with [competitor] for [need]?”
  • Fit: “Is [brand/product] a good fit for [specific audience or constraint]?”
  • Drawbacks: “What are the drawbacks of [brand/product]?”
  • Sources: “Which sources do you recommend for learning about [category]?”

These are prompt templates, not evidence that ChatGPT will receive or answer those exact questions consistently. Preserve the exact wording you use. If you change a prompt, mark it as a new or revised prompt rather than silently treating its results as directly comparable.

Run checks and preserve the evidence

Choose a recurring interval that matches your reporting needs. There is no universal cadence that makes a sample representative. At each check, record enough context to understand what you observed and to repeat the run as closely as practical.

  1. Open ChatGPT and enter the saved prompt as written.
  2. Record whether web search was explicitly requested, visibly used, or not observed. Search is not necessarily active in every conversation: OpenAI says results may appear when a user asks for web search or when ChatGPT decides search would help answer the query. See OpenAI’s transparency page.
  3. Save the answer text or a reviewable capture, the date, exact prompt, account and language context, and any region context relevant to the run.
  4. Log brand and competitor mentions, your chosen framing or sentiment labels, and every cited URL. Keep the raw answer beside any summary score.
  5. When a citation supports a factual claim you plan to repeat, open the cited page and check it. OpenAI cautions that responses and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect; see its accuracy guidance and ChatGPT search help.

A spreadsheet is sufficient for a small prompt set. Add columns for prompt ID and wording, run date, observed search status, answer or capture location, brand and competitor mentions, citations, and run context. Report the sample size and scope with any rate—for example, the number of responses that mentioned the brand divided by the number of responses reviewed, for the stated prompts and dates. That is your observed sample, not a universal ChatGPT benchmark.

Separate mentions, citations, and referral traffic

Use the prompt log to measure what appeared in responses and which pages were cited. Use your analytics platform to measure attributable visits. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs, which site owners can use to identify ChatGPT-referred traffic; see the OpenAI publisher FAQ.

These measures answer different questions. A response may mention the brand without a user visiting the site, and referral sessions do not reveal how often the brand was mentioned. A referral report based on the parameter captures attributable visits, not every influence or mention.

Check whether your public pages can be discovered

If you want public pages considered for ChatGPT search summaries and snippets, check that OAI-SearchBot is not blocked in your robots.txt or by relevant site security controls. OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search and recommends not blocking the crawler when publishers want their content considered. It also notes that a relevant link and page title might still surface in some cases when a page is disallowed. Allowing crawler access supports discovery; it does not guarantee a mention, citation, or ranking. Details are in the publisher FAQ.

Think of crawler access and analytics as separate checks: crawler access concerns whether pages may be considered for discovery, while the utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter helps identify attributable visits from ChatGPT links. Neither is a count of all brand mentions.

Choose manual sampling or monitoring software

When manual tracking is enough

Manual checks suit a small, stable prompt set when someone can review each answer and citation. They make it straightforward to preserve exact prompts and inspect what the response actually said, but the work grows with the number of prompts and reporting runs.

When automation may help

At larger scale, monitoring software may automate recurring prompts and organize mentions, citations, or sentiment labels. OtterlyAI’s own materials describe daily prompt monitoring, brand coverage, sentiment, and citation tracking; these are vendor-described functions, not independent findings about performance or a universal standard. Its help page describes manually added or discovered prompts monitored daily and defines “Brand Coverage” as the share of responses for a prompt that mention a brand. See its prompt-monitoring help and feature page.

Before selecting any platform, check whether it lets you preserve exact prompts, which AI search surfaces it covers, how it handles region and language, whether you can inspect answers and cited URLs, what exports and reporting it offers, and its current pricing, limits, data retention, and data-use terms. No independent side-by-side product test establishes a best provider or verifies monitoring accuracy.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can capture a URL as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its clean-shot steps accept consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the outcome identified in response headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo.

For a quick capture, replace the example URL with the page you want to review and provide your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Screenshot capture can preserve a page for review, but it does not automate the prompt sampling or mention analysis described above. Start with 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ChatGPT search run for every prompt?

No. OpenAI says search results may appear when users ask for web search or when ChatGPT decides search would help answer a query. Record whether search was observed on each run.

Is there a standard benchmark for ChatGPT brand mentions?

The cited sources establish no authoritative, general benchmark. Define the prompts, dates, sample size, counting rule, and run conditions whenever you publish a brand-specific mention rate.
