To reconcile an x402 payment with an application order, link each payment attempt to a durable order ID and track verification, fulfillment, and settlement as separate events. A valid verification does not prove settlement, and the correct order of fulfillment and settlement depends on the payment flow selected for the scheme and network.
How an x402 payment moves from request to settlement
A typical exchange begins when a client requests a resource. The server can return HTTP 402 with payment requirements; the client selects a supported option, creates a signed payment payload, and retries. The server then follows the flow resolved for that scheme and network. The x402 Foundation repository and V2 specification describe the protocol and its operations.
Keep three application events distinct: authorization checks whether the payment payload is acceptable, fulfillment records whether the requested resource operation ran, and settlement records the payment state committed for the request. The specification requires at least one verification or settlement check before resource execution, but flow ordering determines which operations run and when.
Authorization flow
The default flow described in the V2 specification is verify, execute the resource operation, settle, then respond. Fulfillment may therefore precede final settlement evidence. An order that has been served while settlement is unresolved should not be silently treated as settled.

- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
Upfront flow
In an upfront flow, settlement occurs before the resource operation. This gives the server committed payment state before fulfillment, but the application still needs to track whether the resource operation subsequently succeeded.
Escrow flow
In an escrow flow, an initial settlement commits a deposit or ceiling, the resource operation runs, and a later settlement records the final charge. Interpret the initial and later settlement events according to that flow rather than treating them as interchangeable.

What verification and settlement responses establish
/verify checks authorization; it does not commit payment state or write on-chain state. A successful verification is therefore evidence that the payload passed the authorization check, not evidence that payment settlement completed.
/settle durably commits state for the request. Depending on the scheme and flow, that state may be represented by a transaction, an escrow step, a charge record, or a binding of a prepaid proof. Record the response and its available settlement reference, and define which evidence your order system requires before it marks payment complete. The protocol’s exact evidence depends on the selected scheme and implementation.

Build a durable order-to-payment record
The protocol does not prescribe an application order schema. As an implementation pattern, create a payment-attempt record for every attempt and link it to the application order with a stable identifier. Keep retries distinguishable while retaining their relationship to the same order.
| Record field | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Application order ID and internal payment-attempt ID | Connects the business order to a specific protocol attempt and supports investigation of retries. |
| x402 version, scheme, network, and resolved flow | Identifies the protocol behavior that governs the attempt and the expected event order. |
| Expected asset, amount, and pay-to destination | Captures the payment requirements selected for comparison with settlement evidence. |
| Verification result and timestamp | Preserves authorization evidence without conflating it with settlement. |
| Settlement response status, transaction hash or other reference when provided, and submission and confirmation timestamps | Records what settlement evidence was returned and when. Available references vary by scheme and implementation. |
| Fulfillment state and timestamp | Shows whether the resource operation ran and allows comparison with the selected flow’s permitted ordering. |
| Retry or idempotency information, facilitator identity, and endpoint configuration | Helps operators investigate duplicate attempts, retries, and facilitator-related issues. |
These fields are suggested operational data, not mandatory protocol fields. Map them to the scheme’s data model and your application’s order semantics; do not assume every scheme provides the same transaction reference or settlement evidence.

Reconcile expected payments against settlement evidence
A reconciliation job or event consumer can compare each order’s expected payment requirements with the corresponding settlement result. Preserve the order ID and attempt ID through event processing so a result cannot be attached to the wrong order.

Monitor lifecycle health and protect the evidence
Track attempt counts and age by lifecycle state, settlement latency, pending and failed outcomes, facilitator timeouts, malformed responses, mismatches between expected and returned payment data, and orders whose event ordering conflicts with their resolved flow. Include protocol flow and network as dashboard dimensions; combining incompatible flows can make pending work or unusual ordering harder to interpret.
Solana Documentation states: “A network error or malformed response is not proof of payment.” Authenticate facilitator traffic, validate every response, set strict timeouts, and fail closed when the response cannot establish the required state. Before advertising a payment option, check the facilitator’s /supported response for the exact x402 version, scheme, and network. See the Solana facilitator guide.
Choose who operates the facilitator
A facilitator is an architectural role, not a required third party. Depending on the implementation, a team can use a managed service, operate a separate facilitator, or self-facilitate in the resource server. Compare these approaches based on who owns operations, access to network infrastructure, trust and reliability of responses, supported schemes and networks, and where the application needs durable settlement evidence. The Solana facilitator guide covers facilitator integration; verify compatibility for the exact version, scheme, and network you intend to use.
