For a quick manual check, open the ongoing broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and review its stream health and status messages. For unattended monitoring, check the YouTube Live Streaming API’s incoming-stream status and health, then separately verify the broadcast is live and playable in a viewer-facing player. Those checks cover different failure points: an encoder can be sending data even when the public stream is not watchable.

What to monitor: three different states

A reliable check distinguishes the source connection, YouTube’s assessment of that connection, and playback availability. No single status field proves all three.

  • Incoming stream: Is YouTube receiving data from the encoder?
  • Stream health: Does YouTube detect configuration or quality problems in the incoming video or audio?
  • Broadcast playback: Has the broadcast reached its live state, and can a viewer load and play it?

The YouTube Live Streaming API describes status.streamStatus as an ingestion signal: active means YouTube servers are receiving encoder data. It does not, on its own, establish that the public broadcast is live or that playback works for viewers. See Google’s Life of a Broadcast guide.

Check a running stream manually in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the channel’s Live Control Room.
  2. Select the ongoing broadcast and inspect the Stream health area and its status messages. Read the issue details rather than relying only on the preview player.
  3. Use real-time analytics, such as stream duration and concurrent viewers, as context. These are audience indicators, not definitive source-health signals.
  4. Check the encoder’s own status or logs as well. They can help distinguish a stopped source, local computer problem, network failure, or YouTube ingestion issue.

YouTube says Live Control Room shows health and analytics while streaming. This is a practical manual check, but it requires someone to watch the dashboard; the cited YouTube documentation does not establish automatic text or email alerts for stream failures. See YouTube’s guide to live stream metrics.

Automate checks with the YouTube Live Streaming API

API monitoring can check stream status without an operator continuously watching Studio. It requires an application with authorized access to the channel’s broadcast resources; setup, permissions, and quota depend on the application and account.

  1. Identify the relevant liveBroadcast and its bound liveStream using the YouTube Live Streaming API.
  2. Call liveStreams.list and read the resource’s status.streamStatus and status.healthStatus. Record when each observation was made, along with any reported configuration issues.
  3. Define alert rules for a transition from active to inactive or error, a bad health status, or noData or stale health information. Use consecutive checks or a debounce rule to avoid reacting to a transient result.
  4. Check the broadcast lifecycle separately and confirm that its state is live. Where practical, also test a viewer-facing public player or inspect the private monitor stream.
  5. Include the channel or broadcast identifier, first-seen time, stream and health statuses, issue details, and encoder or site health in the alert if available.
  6. When service recovers, record the clear time and whether the API status or viewer-side check recovered first. This helps build an incident history.

YouTube documents the status fields, but does not prescribe a polling interval, alert threshold, notification channel, or availability guarantee. Choose the check interval and consecutive-failure rule according to the station’s outage tolerance and API quota. Consult the LiveStreams API reference for the resource fields.

Interpret the signals without overclaiming

Signal What it supports What it does not prove
streamStatus: active YouTube is receiving data from the encoder. That the public broadcast is live or playback works for viewers.
streamStatus: inactive or error The incoming stream is not active or has an error state. The root cause by itself.
healthStatus: good No configuration issue at warning severity or worse is reported. That every viewer, device, and network can play without problems.
healthStatus: ok No configuration issue at error severity is reported. That there are no warnings.
healthStatus: bad At least one configuration issue has error severity. That the entire broadcast is unwatchable.
healthStatus: noData YouTube’s backend has no health information for the stream. Whether the cause is the encoder, network, API timing, or YouTube.
Concurrent viewers or duration Audience and stream context. A reliable binary uptime test; a low or zero count alone does not establish an outage.
Public player or monitor stream A viewer-oriented availability check or private preview. That every geography, device, and network can play successfully.

The API’s health values and issue details are described in Google’s Configuration Issues for LiveStream Resources. A monitor stream is a private preview of how the broadcast would look to viewers; it complements, rather than replaces, a public-player check.

Troubleshoot health warnings and playback failures

If the incoming stream is inactive or in error

  • Check whether the encoder is running and sending data; review its own logs and connection status.
  • Check the source computer and upload connection. If the encoder has stopped, restore it and confirm that YouTube begins receiving data again.
  • Do not infer a root cause from the API state alone. Compare the encoder’s status with YouTube’s status and the viewer-facing player.

If health is bad or an issue is reported

  • Read the issue type and message. Reported problems can involve audio bitrate, codec or sample rate; video settings, bitrate or frame rate; keyframe timing; or differences between primary and backup streams.
  • Compare the actual encoder output with the settings expected by YouTube. If using primary and backup streams, compare their configurations as well.
  • If YouTube is not receiving enough video for smooth playback, inspect encoder output and upload capacity, then choose an output quality suited to the available uplink.

If the API says active but viewers cannot watch

  • Confirm the broadcast lifecycle state is live, not merely that the bound stream is active.
  • Open the public watch page or use the monitor stream if available. A single successful check is not proof that playback works across all devices, networks, or regions.
  • Keep the API and player results separate in incident alerts so an ingestion success does not hide a playback failure.

Test before relying on a 24/7 setup

Run a test using content with similar audio and motion to the real station output, then observe stream health during the test. YouTube’s encoder guide lists settings that vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, its accessed guidance lists H.264 at 1080p30 with a recommended 10 Mbps bitrate and 720p30 with a recommended 4 Mbps bitrate; these are YouTube recommendations, not universal minimums for a radio station’s static visual. The same guide recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide for the settings relevant to your output.

PumpFuse PFA01 Internet Watchdog | Auto Router Rebooter | Fixes Frozen Internet | No Cloud, No Subscription | Vacation Rental & Smart Home Essential | Works with Home Assistant, OpenClaw & Local API
  • Auto-Fixes Frozen Internet — No More Manual Reboots. Continuously monitors your connection by pinging 3 independent DNS servers every 60 seconds. All must fail multiple consecutive checks before action is taken to help prevent false alarms. When your router becomes unresponsive, Internet Watchdog automatically power-cycles it and verifies the connection is restored before resuming monitoring. Operates 24/7 while you sleep, travel, or work.
  • Smart Retry Logic — Prevents Rapid Reboot Cycles. Built-in grace periods allow your internet time to recover before any reboot. If the first restart does not resolve the issue, Watchdog waits 30 minutes and retries, up to 3 total attempts. If the problem persists, it stops retrying and provides LED and app indication. Designed to avoid unnecessary reboot loops and repeated power cycling.
  • Scheduled Daily Reboots — Optional Preventative Maintenance. Set a daily reboot time, such as 4:00 AM, to refresh your router and help reduce slowdowns. Ideal for vacation rentals and short-term rental properties that require consistent guest WiFi. Uses the same controlled reboot process with connection verification.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the YouTube stream to continue without leaving a computer or home connection running, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping from the cloud. The setup is: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. It plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
