Use Playwright to capture a page on a schedule, then compare each run with a reviewed reference image to detect visual changes. For a machine you maintain, cron can launch the capture script; for a hosted runner, GitHub Actions can schedule it. Reliable monitoring depends on stable browser conditions, retained screenshots and diffs, and a way to notice failed runs—not just on taking an image.
Choose what you want the monitor to detect
A screenshot archive shows what a page looked like at a particular time. Visual regression monitoring adds a comparison against a known-good image, so a changed page can be flagged for review. These are related but different jobs: a saved image is evidence, while a comparison produces a change signal.
- For a broad record of a page, capture the full page.
- For a specific component, capture that element alone to reduce unrelated changes.
- For automated visual checks, use Playwright Test’s screenshot assertion and review the resulting diff before updating the reference.
Capture a website screenshot with Playwright
Install Playwright in a Node.js project, then create a script such as capture.mjs. Set a fixed viewport and wait for a meaningful page condition before capturing. The official guide documents page screenshots, full-page capture, element capture, and image buffers: Playwright Screenshots.

For a focused capture, locate an element and call its screenshot method instead, for example await page.locator('[data-testid="price-card"]').screenshot({ path: 'price-card.png' });. If another system will process the image in memory, Playwright can return screenshot bytes rather than writing a file. See the screenshots guide for the capture options.
Wait for the page state that matters
domcontentloaded is a navigation milestone, not proof that every image or client-rendered widget is ready. When the monitored content appears asynchronously, wait for a specific visible selector or another known state before capture. Avoid a long arbitrary sleep when a concrete readiness condition is available. Full-page screenshots may also need care for pages that lazy-load content as you scroll; verify that the content of interest is present in the captured image.
Detect visual changes with Playwright Test
For comparison rather than archiving alone, put the page visit in a Playwright Test and use toHaveScreenshot(). On its first run, Playwright creates a reference screenshot; later runs compare the current rendering with that reference. Review and retain the baseline, and update it only when a change is intentional. Automatically accepting every changed image would remove the very signal the monitor is meant to provide. Later runs can fail when the screenshot differs; inspect the current image and diff to decide whether the page changed unexpectedly or the baseline should be deliberately revised. Screenshot rendering is sensitive to environment. Playwright warns: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” Use the same OS, browser build, fonts, viewport, and page setup for baseline creation and later comparisons wherever practical. Playwright’s continuous integration guidance discusses CI setup and containers for keeping screenshot environments consistent.
Schedule the monitor with local cron
Cron is suitable when you control a machine that will be available at the scheduled time. Install the project dependencies and browser once, and use a wrapper script so cron receives an explicit working directory, runtime path, environment, and log destination.
- Create a wrapper: save a shell script such as
/home/monitor/run-capture.shand make it executable withchmod +x /home/monitor/run-capture.sh. - Use absolute paths: change to the project directory and invoke the intended Node executable directly rather than relying on an interactive shell’s PATH.
- Edit the user’s crontab: run
crontab -eand add a five-field schedule followed by the command. - Check output and errors: redirect standard output and errors to a log file, and retain the generated images in a durable location.

The Linux manual says cron checks entries every minute. Local-time jobs can behave differently at daylight-saving transitions: a scheduled time that does not exist can be skipped, while a duplicated local time can run twice. Consult the crontab(5) manual for the behavior of the cron implementation on your system.
Make local runs diagnosable
- Use a non-login shell-friendly wrapper with explicit paths; cron does not necessarily inherit the environment you see in a terminal.
- Keep a log and timestamped screenshots, and confirm the cron service and host are available.
- Protect secrets and environment files with appropriate filesystem permissions.
- Arrange a separate alert for failed jobs if an operator must respond; cron and the screenshot script do not automatically provide a notification policy.
Schedule captures with GitHub Actions
A scheduled workflow is an alternative when you do not want to maintain an always-available machine. Create a workflow file in the repository and keep it on the repository’s default branch. The following illustrative workflow runs daily at 03:15 UTC and can also be started manually:

This example assumes the repository contains a package lock file, a Playwright Test configuration, and the test shown above or an equivalent test. Configure artifact upload or another durable store if screenshots and reports must remain available after a run; configure failure notifications separately if people need to be alerted. Pin action versions according to your maintenance policy.

Whichever route you choose, preserve a consistent browser environment for comparisons. Differences in OS, browser version, fonts, viewport, settings, hardware, and headless mode can create noisy image changes that are not meaningful website changes. Retain the screenshot, any diff or report, and the run result so you can distinguish a visual change from a failed navigation or capture.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: navigation may have returned an error or the page may render content after DOM readiness. Check the response status, wait for the page-specific content, and verify that lazy-loaded material has appeared before capture.
- The monitor reports changes on every run: compare the runtime, browser build, operating system, fonts, viewport, and page setup. Stabilize them before changing the reference image.
- Images are overwritten: include a target identifier and timestamp in each output path, or deliberately retain a baseline separately from dated run artifacts.
- The cron task works in a terminal but not on schedule: use absolute paths, explicitly set needed environment variables, set the working directory in the wrapper, and inspect redirected logs.
- A scheduled local run is missing or duplicated around a clock change: account for cron’s local-time daylight-saving behavior, or schedule at a time that avoids the transition for your timezone.
- The GitHub workflow never starts: verify the workflow is on the repository’s default branch and check its five-field expression, timezone assumption, and platform scheduling constraints.
- A changed baseline hides a real regression: inspect the current image and diff before updating the reference; do not make baseline acceptance automatic.
