First decide which state you want the monitor to detect: the browser’s geolocation permission prompt, the page after access is allowed or denied, or location-specific content. These are different states. In Playwright, setting coordinates and granting permission produces an allowed-location scenario; it does not reproduce the human-facing browser prompt. For repeatable location-specific screenshots, fix the coordinates, permission state, browser configuration, viewport, and capture scope between runs.

Choose the state your screenshot should represent

A geolocation prompt is a browser permission interface, while a site may also change its own content based on the permission result or the visitor’s location. Decide which of these outcomes your monitor should capture before building the check:

  • Prompt visible: detect whether the browser displays its geolocation permission prompt. Prompt rendering and behavior depend on the browser and version, so validate this in the exact environment used by the monitor.
  • Permission allowed: provide fixed coordinates and grant geolocation permission, then capture the resulting page. This is a controlled allowed-location test, not a prompt-visible test.
  • Permission denied: check the page’s response when location access is denied. Keep this distinct from both an allowed state and a visible prompt.
  • Location-specific content: grant access with known coordinates and monitor the content returned for that location.

Playwright’s Emulation documentation describes how to grant the geolocation permission and set a specific area. That setup is useful for reproducible location content, but it should not be mistaken for controlling or displaying a person-facing permission dialog.

Set up a repeatable location-specific capture with Playwright

For a check of content shown after location is allowed, create a browser context with explicit coordinates and the geolocation permission, then open the page and capture it. Keep the coordinate values and browser configuration the same for every run. The following example uses Playwright Test; replace the URL and coordinates with values appropriate for the page and scenario you are monitoring.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('captures the page for a fixed location', async ({ browser }) => {
  const context = await browser.newContext({
    geolocation: { latitude: 37.7749, longitude: -122.4194 },
    permissions: ['geolocation'],
    viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 },
  });

  const page = await context.newPage();
  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'location-page.png' });
  await context.close();
});

This is an allowed-permission example. It does not establish that a browser prompt will appear. Playwright also documents changing geolocation later for pages in the same context; use that when a test needs to compare multiple locations without changing the rest of its browser setup. See the Emulation documentation for the supported context configuration and updates.

Choose screenshot scope and comparison method

Capture the viewport, one element, or the full page

Match the capture scope to what you are monitoring. Use a viewport screenshot when the prompt or relevant content is visible in the current viewport. Capture a selected element when only one component matters. Use a full-page screenshot when below-the-fold content is part of the check. Playwright documents these screenshot options in its Screenshots guide and Page screenshot API reference.

Wait for visual stability before comparing

For visual regression checks with Playwright Test, use a screenshot assertion rather than comparing an immediate capture. The assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to produce the same result before comparing the last capture with the expectation. This behavior is documented for the Playwright test runner in the Visual comparisons documentation. A stable screenshot does not by itself prove that the intended permission state was reached, so set and record that state separately.

Monitor a prompt-visible state separately

If the alert should fire when the browser’s own permission prompt appears, do not infer that state from a test which has already granted permission. The cited Playwright geolocation setup configures permission and coordinates; it does not document reproducing or controlling the human-facing prompt. Run and validate this check in the exact browser and version used by the monitor, and confirm that the screenshot captures the prompt in that environment.

Historical prompt illustrations are not a dependable guide to current browser UI. The comparative examples available for this topic show Chrome 114, Firefox 114, Safari 16.5.1, and Edge 114; they do not establish how current versions display a prompt. Avoid assuming a universal click sequence or visual appearance across browsers.

Keep each monitoring run comparable

When a screenshot changes, the cause may be a genuine site update, a changed location, a different permission state, or a browser/version difference. Store these settings alongside the baseline so you can interpret changes rather than treating every pixel difference as a site regression.

Troubleshoot common mismatches

The page shows unexpected location content

Check that the run uses the intended coordinates and that geolocation permission is granted for the allowed-location scenario. Confirm that these values have not changed between the baseline and the current capture.

The expected permission prompt is missing

A setup that grants geolocation permission represents an allowed state, not a prompt-visible state. Validate prompt monitoring independently in the browser and version used for the check; do not treat a granted-permission screenshot as evidence that the prompt was tested.

The screenshot differs between runs

Compare the recorded browser/version, coordinates, permission state, viewport, and screenshot scope. For Playwright Test visual comparisons, use the documented screenshot assertion so comparison waits for two consecutive screenshots to stabilize.

The relevant content is absent from the image

Check whether the content is outside the viewport. Switch to a selected-element or full-page screenshot if the monitored area is not visible in the viewport capture.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API can return a screenshot or PDF with one GET request. For a location-sensitive page, use the API’s geolocation and browser-permission options where appropriate; this does not replace validating a browser’s human-facing permission prompt in the exact browser environment you need to monitor.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. This cURL example requests an image for a page:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
