Monitor a website in layers: check that its server responds, run browser-based tests through important user journeys, measure page performance, and capture screenshots to show what actually rendered. Add real-user monitoring (RUM) to understand visitors’ real conditions. A screenshot is useful incident evidence, but it cannot by itself prove a page is fast, functional, or available to every user.
Choose checks that match what users need
A single “up” signal cannot answer every operational question. Use separate checks for reachability, browser behavior, performance, and real visitor experience.
| Layer | What it tells you | What it does not establish on its own |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP, HTTPS, or TCP availability check | Whether a configured endpoint responds and meets status or response-content criteria. | Whether page assets loaded, JavaScript ran, or the interface is usable. Google Cloud says its public uptime checks do not load assets or execute JavaScript. Google Cloud public uptime checks |
| Scripted synthetic browser test | Whether a defined user journey succeeds, and how long the run takes. Tests can exercise actions such as signing in or completing checkout. Google Cloud synthetic monitoring overview | How every real visitor experiences the site under their own device, browser, or network conditions. |
| Performance measurement | How quickly important content appears under the measurement conditions, using metrics such as Largest Contentful Paint (LCP). | Whether the journey’s functionality succeeds or whether every user sees the same result. |
| Screenshot evidence | What a browser rendered at a particular point in a test, which can help investigate visual regressions or incidents. | A universal performance result, successful interaction, or universal visual-diff threshold. Lighthouse guidance describes element screenshots for inspecting UI associated with user-experience metrics; it does not establish a universal screenshot interval or retention policy. Lighthouse guidance |
| Real-user monitoring (RUM) | How actual visitors experience the site, with segmentation such as device, browser, or geography when available. | A controlled, repeatable test of a specific release or journey. Lab and field measurements describe different conditions and complement each other. web.dev measurement guidance |
Map the pages and journeys worth monitoring
Start with the service outcomes users depend on, not just the homepage. A homepage check can miss a broken login, search, checkout, or other critical path. Google Cloud’s synthetic-monitoring examples include login and ecommerce checkout.
- List critical endpoints: include the homepage and important public pages or API endpoints. Decide what counts as a valid response, including acceptable status and expected response content.
- List critical browser journeys: write down the actions needed to complete tasks such as signing in, searching, or checking out. Test the outcome, not only whether the first page opens.
- Choose the evidence for each check: use response status and content for endpoint checks; browser success/failure and logs for scripted journeys; metrics for speed; and a screenshot where the rendered state will help explain a result.
- Choose geographic coverage deliberately: check from locations relevant to your users. A result from one location does not establish availability everywhere.
- Define alert conditions: alert on failed checks and ensure the configured condition represents the service users actually need. Google Cloud documents alerting on failed checks and configurable status and response-content criteria. Google Cloud public uptime checks
Set up endpoint and browser-based monitoring
Use an availability check for reachability
Configure a periodic HTTP, HTTPS, or TCP check for each important endpoint. For a web page, check more than whether some response arrived: choose a status expectation and, where appropriate, a response-content requirement that helps distinguish a valid page from an error page returned with a successful status. Google Cloud public uptime checks can run from multiple locations, but they do not load assets or execute JavaScript. Google Cloud public uptime checks

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
Keep this check narrow and reliable. Its job is to detect endpoint reachability and the response conditions you configure—not to stand in for browser rendering or a user journey.
Use scripted synthetic monitoring for user journeys
Build browser or script tests around the actions users need to complete. A login test should verify a meaningful post-login state; a checkout test should verify its intended completion condition. Merely loading the first URL is not evidence that a multi-step journey works. Google Cloud synthetic monitors periodically run scripted tests and collect success or failure, execution time, logs, and metrics. Google Cloud synthetic monitoring overview
Keep test credentials and any sensitive data protected, and design the test so it can run repeatedly without creating unwanted transactions or changing production data. The precise safeguards depend on the application and monitoring platform.
Measure page performance with LCP and complementary data
Largest Contentful Paint measures when the largest visible image, text block, or video is rendered. Google’s web.dev guidance classifies LCP of 2.5 seconds or less as good and above 4 seconds as poor. Assess the 75th percentile separately for mobile and desktop; these are performance thresholds, not uptime targets. web.dev LCP guidance

- Use lab runs to investigate changes: controlled tests are repeatable and useful for comparing a page before and after a change.
- Use RUM to understand actual visits: field data reflects real visitor conditions and can reveal problems that a controlled run does not capture.
- Keep the distinction visible: lab and field measurements can differ because they represent different conditions. Use both where possible rather than treating one as a replacement for the other. web.dev measurement guidance
Do not infer that a page meets an LCP target from its screenshot. A screenshot is visual evidence of a rendered state; a performance metric is needed to assess timing.
Use screenshots as diagnostic evidence
Capture a screenshot as part of the browser test when it will help explain what happened: for example, whether the expected page appeared, an error message was shown, or a layout changed. Lighthouse supports element screenshots for inspecting UI associated with user-experience metrics such as layout shifts. Lighthouse guidance
Compare screenshots in context. Differences may come from dynamic content, time, location, browser, or viewport as well as a genuine regression. The cited guidance does not prescribe a universal visual-diff tolerance, capture frequency, or retention period, so choose those according to the stability of your pages and the operational value of retaining evidence.

Evaluate tools against the checks you need rather than treating “monitoring” as one feature. Google Cloud documents endpoint checks and scripted synthetic monitors. Lighthouse, PageSpeed Insights, Chrome DevTools, and WebPageTest are software routes for lab testing and performance diagnosis; their mention does not imply that a physical product is required. | Comparison question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does it perform HTTP/HTTPS/TCP checks, browser journeys, or both? | Endpoint checks catch response failures; browser tests cover rendering and actions. |
| Where can checks run? | Geographic coverage affects whether the check reflects the users and regions you serve. |
| Which browsers, devices, and network conditions can it represent? | These conditions influence whether a test resembles the experience you need to examine. |
| Does it provide metrics, screenshots, logs, and failure details? | Evidence makes a failure easier to diagnose than a bare pass/fail signal. |
| What alerting and integrations are available? | Detection is useful only if the right people receive an actionable notification. |
| Can you pair synthetic tests with RUM? | Synthetic tests are controlled; RUM shows actual visitor conditions. |
Or skip the browser setup: capture a page with ScreenshotNeo
If you need screenshot evidence without building the capture side of a browser test, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call API can return a screenshot or PDF; it is not a replacement for a complete monitoring system or a scripted test of your application’s interactions.
For a direct capture, create an API key and replace YOUR_API_KEY with it. This cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of the target URL. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts or removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. It is useful for capturing page evidence, while availability alerts, journey assertions, and performance measurements still need checks that specifically provide them.

The homepage passes, but users cannot complete a task
Add a scripted test for the critical journey itself, such as login or checkout, and assert the expected result after the relevant actions. A homepage response does not establish that later steps work.
A screenshot differs, but the cause is unclear
Check whether the capture conditions match: page state, viewport, browser, location, and timing can affect what appears. Use the screenshot to investigate, then consult the test logs and performance metrics; an image alone does not identify the cause or prove a timing regression.
Lab results look good, but visitors still report slowness
Compare the lab run with RUM segmented by relevant visitor conditions, such as device or browser where available. Lab and field results describe different conditions and can disagree. web.dev measurement guidance
An alert fires, but the service seems healthy
Review the exact status and response-content criteria, the check location, and whether the test measures the service outcome you intended. A configured check can only alert correctly for the condition it actually evaluates. Google Cloud public uptime checks
Quick Recap
Operational notes: alerting, evidence, and cost
- Alert on meaningful failures: select response and content requirements that represent user-facing service, and make sure failures reach an owner.
- Keep evidence connected: associate screenshots with the check result and its logs or metrics where your tooling supports it, so the visual state can be interpreted alongside timing and outcome.
- Control the monitoring footprint: browser tests and repeated screenshots are more involved than a simple response check. Select locations, journeys, and capture frequency according to risk and diagnostic need; no universal interval or screenshot-retention rule is established by the cited guidance.
- Verify service terms before buying: Pingdom’s current pricing and exact plan entitlements are not established here. Confirm current plans and features directly before selecting a paid tier.
