Monitor critical public URLs with scheduled checks from outside your infrastructure, and treat each failed probe as a signal—not immediate proof of a site-wide outage. To investigate what happened later, preserve timestamped check results, probe locations, incident start and recovery times, and searchable logs on a common time basis.
Choose checks that reflect what users depend on
Start with the publicly reachable URLs and services whose failure would matter: for example, a homepage, login page, checkout endpoint, or public API. Checking only the homepage can miss a failure in a more important user journey. GOV.UK describes monitoring as a series of tests against systems or a service to assess status and signal when something is wrong; choose checks that represent the service your readers actually use. GOV.UK Service Manual
Run scheduled HTTP or HTTPS requests from outside the infrastructure being monitored. Google Cloud uptime checks can periodically request publicly accessible URLs and resources using HTTP, HTTPS, or TCP, and can alert on failure. These are outside-in observations of service behavior, not a substitute for internal telemetry.

Decide what counts as success
Set an expected status behavior and, where useful, assert that the response contains expected content. A server can return a response even when it is not the page or service behavior you intended, so a status-only check may miss some failures. Account for redirects: Google Cloud documents that its HTTP and HTTPS checks follow redirects and evaluate the final response.

A standard HTTP check does not load page assets or execute JavaScript. A successful response therefore does not establish that a full browser-rendered page, interactive workflow, or transaction works. Add browser-level or transaction-level checks when those are part of your reliability requirement. Google Cloud uptime checks documentation
Interpret failures before declaring an outage
A failed probe tells you that a particular check, from a particular path and location, did not meet its configured success criteria at that time. It does not by itself show the cause or the scope of the problem. Google notes that a single checker can fail because of temporary network congestion; its default alert configuration does not necessarily notify on one checker failure.
- Review the failed check’s response, status, timing, and probe location.
- Compare results from other check locations and the same URL’s nearby checks.
- Look for independent observations, such as application, hosting, DNS, CDN, or user reports.
- Declare an incident based on corroborating evidence and your operational criteria; record the first observed failure separately from any estimated start time.
Google Cloud describes checks from multiple locations. Use that distribution to help distinguish a site-wide problem from a probe-path issue rather than relying on a lone result. Alert thresholds and confirmation behavior should match the risk of the service and the consequences of false alarms.

- ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
- EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
- PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
- VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
- FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.
Preserve an incident record that can be reconstructed
Keep the check result and the surrounding operational context together. For each relevant observation, record the target and configuration, timestamp and timezone, outcome, response code, response-time result, probe location, and whether other probes agreed. Record the first observed failure and the recovery time; if the actual start is unknown, label it as an estimate rather than presenting it as directly observed.
- Check evidence: affected URL or endpoint, check type and assertions, result, response code, response time, timestamp, timezone, and probe location.
- Incident timeline: first observed failure, confirmed incident time if different, recovery time, status updates, and actions taken.
- Corroborating records: relevant application, web server, CDN, DNS, hosting, and infrastructure logs, plus independent observations where available.
- Retrieval details: which systems hold each record, who can retrieve it, and how to export or search it later.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) recommends knowing what log sources exist, how to retrieve them, and who can do so; it also recommends checking that logs are searchable. The NCSC says to retain logs ideally for at least three months where possible. Treat this as guidance, not a universal legal or contractual retention period; set retention to suit operational, incident, and applicable recordkeeping needs. NCSC incident response guidance
Make timestamps and logs usable together
Synchronize evidence and log sources to the same time server and timezone so investigators can correlate events. Keep archived logs extractable, and consider centralized collection when it improves correlation across systems. Make sure the people responsible for incident response can locate and retrieve the needed records while access remains appropriately controlled.

For APIs, NCSC guidance distinguishes logging—retrospective recordkeeping—from monitoring—continuous observation used to detect behavior and alert. It advises recording useful call details such as timestamp, source IP, user identity, and endpoint, while avoiding passwords, API keys, access tokens, and personal data in logs. Apply the relevant fields to your service and protect sensitive records. NCSC logging and monitoring guidance

An alert is a record of what a configured probe observed, not necessarily proof of the cause, duration, or scope of an outage. Correlate alerts with logs and independent observations. If an incident could matter for a contract, regulation, or legal dispute, retain original records and timestamps and follow the evidence-handling requirements applicable to your organization and jurisdiction. The NCSC discusses evidential capture where court action is likely; the general guidance cited here does not establish a universal chain-of-custody procedure.

| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| HTTP, HTTPS, TCP, or browser-level coverage | Shows which service behaviors the check can observe; ordinary HTTP checks do not execute JavaScript or load page assets. |
| Status and content validation | Helps distinguish an expected response from a technically successful but unwanted response. |
| Probe locations and disagreement behavior | Helps you interpret isolated failures and determine how alerts respond when probes differ. |
| Response code, timing, and location in alerts or history | Provides context to investigate the observation rather than just a failure notification. |
| Incident history, retention, and export or retrieval | Determines whether records will still be available and usable during later analysis. |
| Alert routing and integrations | Shows whether results reach the people and operational systems that need to act. |
As examples of vendor-described capabilities, Uptime.com says its HTTP(S) alerts include a response code and location codes for probe servers, with real-time analysis available. For an additional visual record of what a page rendered during an incident, a screenshot can supplement—not replace—availability checks, logs, or incident timestamps. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. After setting up an account and obtaining an API key, make a one-call capture:

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients.
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
