Build a dated list of campaign websites, check each page on a stated schedule, and save evidence when something material changes. Treat a campaign site as a source for what the campaign said—not as an official source for voting procedures. For registration, polling places, deadlines, and results, verify details with the relevant state or local election office.
What to track—and what a website check can tell you
Decide which candidates, offices, and jurisdictions you are following, and define what counts as a meaningful change. Relevant pages may include issue positions, biographies, endorsements, fundraising language, event notices, candidate-filing claims, press releases, and links to voting information.
A website record is not a complete account of a campaign’s communications. Campaigns also communicate through social media, advertising, email, and other sites. The Library of Congress Elections Web Archive notes that archived campaign sites may include associated social media channels, but its collection is not a comprehensive record of every campaign or online message. Build and verify a candidate-site inventory
Use a source list rather than relying on memory. For each candidate, record the candidate’s name, office, jurisdiction, campaign URL, committee name or ID if available, where you found the URL, and the date you last checked it.
Check federal committee disclosures
For a political committee with an official website, Federal Election Commission guidance says its Internet address must be disclosed on its Statement of Organization (Form 1). If a registered committee later establishes a website or changes its address, the guidance says it must file an amended Form 1 within 10 days. This requirement concerns committees covered by federal filing rules; state and local candidates may be subject to different systems. Check the filing record against the campaign site rather than assuming an FEC record covers every candidate or proves a site is current. FEC: Disclosure of committee’s official website

Separate campaign sites from election-office sites
A candidate’s campaign domain is not an election-administration source. CISA and the U.S. Election Assistance Commission identify state, local, tribal, and territorial election officials as the primary sources of official election information. Their guidance also recommends current, usable election-office websites and a .gov domain to help the public identify official government sites. A .gov domain is restricted to verified U.S. government organizations; it does not make a campaign website an official election office. Choose a checking cadence and method
Choose a schedule that fits the reporting question, state it in your notes, and record missed checks. A periodic check is not continuous monitoring: a change may appear and disappear between visits.

| Method | Useful for | Limit to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Manual scheduled review | Small candidate lists where context and human judgment matter | It takes time and can miss changes between checks. |
| Automated page-change alerts | Larger lists and routine notifications | Coverage varies. Check whether a tool handles dynamic pages, mobile content, PDFs, images, and blocked content; verify alerts manually. |

A page can change without its words changing: a link may move, an image may be replaced, or a PDF may be updated. If those details matter, save a screenshot or public document as well as noting the page URL. Do not bypass access controls or collect material from private or restricted areas; this workflow is for public campaign websites.
Preserve material changes as dated observations
For each significant observation, save a record with enough detail for another person to understand what you saw and when. Useful fields include:

- What changed, including a short exact excerpt when useful.
- A screenshot, downloaded public document, or archive reference when appropriate.
- The source and method used to retrieve the page.
- Whether the evidence is a current live page, an archived historical version, or your interpretation.
Distinguish the date you observed a page from any publication date displayed on it and from the date an archive captured it. The Library of Congress describes weekly election-season archiving since 2000 for its collection; a missing capture does not show that a page never existed or that a change did not occur. An archive capture is evidence of a preserved version, not proof that the page was continuously available, complete, or authored by a particular person. Library of Congress collection description

Verify election information and report changes carefully
If a campaign page gives a voting location, registration deadline, election date, or other voter-service instruction, check the relevant election office and link to that primary source. Attribute the campaign statement to the campaign, preserve the date you observed it, and make clear when you are quoting an archived version. Election officials—not candidate websites—are the primary sources for official election information. CISA and EAC guidance

Do not describe a changed page as a retraction, concealment, or policy reversal unless additional evidence supports that characterization. A careful account says what differed, where the versions came from, and when they were observed, then distinguishes those facts from any interpretation.
Handle disclaimer and campaign-finance claims with care
FEC disclaimer guidance distinguishes among communication types, authorization, and format, so it should not be treated as a universal legal ruling about any particular webpage. The FEC page accessed October 3, 2026, warns that it may not yet reflect a June 30, 2026 Supreme Court decision. For legal reporting, consult the current FEC material and applicable law rather than inferring a violation from a page change or missing disclaimer alone. FEC: Advertising and disclaimers
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Capture a public campaign page with ScreenshotNeo
For a repeatable screenshot record, you can capture a public page with a single API request. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; its service can return an image or PDF, and its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. For election-site monitoring, retain the URL and observation time alongside the captured image so the screenshot is a dated record, not a substitute for verification. ScreenshotNeo
Or skip the browser setup
Use this cURL request to capture a public campaign page as WebP. Replace the example URL with the page you are recording and insert your API key. The ScreenshotNeo documentation covers the API parameters.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, and failed loads are not billed, and cache hits are not billed. Each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server offers screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.
Troubleshoot incomplete or misleading records
- An alert reports a change, but the page looks the same: compare the saved versions and check for non-text changes such as moved links or replaced images. Record what the tool detected and what you could verify directly.
- A dynamic page or PDF was not captured: check the page manually and preserve a screenshot or public file when relevant. Tool behavior varies, so do not treat a missing alert as proof that nothing changed.
- You cannot find a past page in the Library of Congress archive: treat that as a coverage gap, not evidence that the page never existed. The collection is selected and its stated cadence is weekly during election seasons.
- A campaign page conflicts with voting information elsewhere: verify the claim with the relevant state or local election office before reporting it as official guidance.
- A federal committee’s listed website differs from the campaign URL: check the committee’s filing history and note the dates of both observations; the FEC disclosure rule does not establish that the site is current.
