To monitor a company’s SEC filings, search SEC EDGAR by company name, ticker, or CIK, then subscribe to the search’s RSS feed in an RSS reader. The SEC also offers Latest Filings search and RSS for broader monitoring. It does not send email notifications for EDGAR filings, and its near-real-time options do not guarantee a delivery time.

Can you get email alerts for SEC filings?

No—not from the SEC for EDGAR company filings. The SEC Webmaster FAQ states: “We don’t offer an email notification service for EDGAR filings.” SEC email updates cover other SEC material, so they should not be confused with filing notifications. Some companies offer their own investor-relations alerts, but availability and coverage vary.

Monitor one company with an SEC RSS feed

  1. Open SEC Search Filings and search for the company by name, ticker, or Central Index Key (CIK).
  2. On the company search results, find the RSS link and subscribe to it using an RSS reader.
  3. If you only want certain filings, filter the company search by filing type before subscribing where the interface allows it. For instance, you can focus on annual or quarterly reports, current reports, or ownership filings.
  4. Check the feed in your reader for new entries. The SEC’s RSS guidance explains its feeds and filtering.

This is a straightforward option when you want updates for one issuer without maintaining a custom workflow.

Monitor multiple companies or filing types

Use the SEC’s Latest Filings search when your watchlist is broader or you want to focus on a particular form type across companies. Filter by company, CIK, or form type, and use the associated RSS link when available. The SEC identifies Latest Filings search and its RSS as its best official options for close-to-real-time availability.

Choose the approach based on what you need to watch:

Approach Useful for Delivery Effort
Company search RSS One issuer, optionally narrowed by filing type RSS reader Subscribe to a feed
Latest Filings search and RSS Multiple issuers or a filing-type-focused watch Manual search or RSS reader Set filters and monitor the feed
SEC data APIs Repeatable or custom multi-company workflows Your software workflow Build and maintain an integration
Issuer investor-relations alerts Company-specific announcements and any filing alerts the issuer provides Issuer-controlled alerts Subscribe on the issuer’s site, if offered

Build a filing-monitoring workflow with SEC data

For software-based monitoring, the SEC’s data resources include EDGAR APIs for filer submissions history and XBRL data. Review the SEC’s current access guidance before building a client. Submissions history can help identify new filings for a filer; XBRL resources provide structured data for supported filing information.

A custom workflow is appropriate when you need to combine multiple filers, store events, or route updates into another system. It also means you are responsible for polling or processing the data, handling errors, and deciding how your system identifies and reports new filings. Do not treat an API workflow as an SEC-guaranteed notification service.

How quickly do filings appear?

The SEC says filings are often available on sec.gov within 1–3 minutes of the EDGAR system timestamp. That is an observation, not a service guarantee: the SEC says delay can increase significantly under high server load and that it cannot guarantee or predict the lag. A feed or custom monitor should therefore be treated as a way to detect availability, not as a precise deadline or trading signal. See the SEC Webmaster FAQ document.

Use issuer alerts as a supplement

Check the company’s investor-relations website for optional alerts. Some issuers include SEC filings in real-time or email updates; for example, Hamilton Lane’s 2026 annual report describes real-time alerts for information on its shareholder site, including SEC filings. That is one issuer’s offering, not evidence that every company provides the same feature. Use issuer alerts alongside EDGAR rather than assuming they cover every filing or issuer.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request can return a screenshot or PDF of a page; it is not an SEC filing alert service, but can be useful if your workflow also needs captures of public web pages. Its pre-capture cleanup can accept cookie/consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets, with each step configurable. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents.

Common problems and fixes

  • No company results: Try the issuer’s full legal name, ticker, or CIK in SEC Search Filings.
  • The feed includes too many filings: Narrow the company search by filing type, or use Latest Filings filters for company, CIK, or form type.
  • You expected an SEC email: The SEC does not provide email notifications for EDGAR filings. Use a search RSS feed or check whether the issuer offers its own alerts.
  • A filing has not appeared yet: Availability can lag the EDGAR timestamp, especially under high server load. The SEC does not guarantee or predict the delay.
  • Your custom monitor misses updates: Review the current SEC access guidance and verify that your workflow is querying the intended filer and processing submissions-history responses correctly.
