Monitor the whole chain: when work was expected, whether it started, whether it completed successfully, and whether a failure alert reached a destination someone monitors. A healthy scheduler or a configured notification rule alone cannot prove that every link worked.

What to monitor for every scheduled job

Record the operational expectations for each job before setting alerts. Its cadence, time zone, acceptable start delay, expected duration, and the impact of a missed run determine what counts as late or urgent. Those thresholds are workload decisions; Kubernetes and Databricks do not prescribe universal alert windows.

  • Expected versus actual start: detect an invocation that never appeared, including a paused or misconfigured schedule.
  • Run outcome: capture success, failure, cancellation, and any skipped or missed state exposed by the scheduler.
  • Last successful completion: use a timestamp or success heartbeat to detect silence. If a job never starts, it may emit no error at all.
  • Duration and backlog: alert when work takes too long or accumulates beyond a job-specific threshold. Databricks, for example, supports duration-warning and streaming-backlog notifications (Databricks job notifications).
  • Notification delivery: treat the receiver or webhook as a separate dependency. Check its response or receipt where practical; configured notifications do not by themselves establish end-to-end delivery.
  • Diagnostic context: include the job name, scheduled time, run identifier, attempt number, failure reason, and a pointer to retained logs where available.

Think of monitoring as expected schedule → job creation → execution → successful completion → notification delivery. A signal at one stage does not prove the next stage worked.

How to tell a scheduled job did not run

Compare expected invocation times with actual runs, and independently check the age of the last successful completion. The second check catches the quiet failure case: no invocation, no task error, and therefore no failure event to notify on. Use a schedule-aware external heartbeat or expected-success check if the scheduler’s own events cannot reveal a missing invocation; this is a monitoring design pattern, not a guarantee provided by the scheduler.

Scheduled execution is not necessarily exactly once. Kubernetes documents that a CronJob can, in some circumstances, create multiple Jobs or none for a scheduled time. It recommends making Jobs idempotent so retries or duplicate executions do not cause unintended effects (Kubernetes CronJob documentation).

How to alert when a scheduled job fails

Use scheduler-native events for run states the platform exposes, then add a missing-run or stale-success alert for failures that produce no event. Set alert timing and severity from the job’s impact, time sensitivity, retry behavior, and recovery window rather than applying one threshold to unrelated workloads.

  • Page immediately when delay threatens time-sensitive users, finances, safety, or data integrity.
  • Use a durable ticket or team channel for lower-impact failures, and escalate on repeated failures or a stale last-success timestamp.
  • Include actionable context so the recipient can identify the affected scheduled occurrence, inspect the right run, and reach its logs.

In a Prometheus environment, Alertmanager is the component to consider for alert routing and grouping (Prometheus Alertmanager documentation). Exact routing configuration depends on the stack and is not covered here.

Choose notification scope that matches failure semantics

Job-level and task-level notifications can describe different events. Databricks documents that job-level notifications are not sent for failed tasks that are retried; task-level notifications cover those failures. It also treats a run marked “Succeeded with failures” as successful for job-level notification selection, so selecting Success is necessary to receive that job-level event (Databricks job notifications).

  • 5v power through USB3 port or 5v wall transformer (or both). ~500ma consumption.
Approach Useful for Important limitation
Scheduler-native job events Run starts, final job outcomes, and platform-specific duration or backlog events. Event semantics vary by scheduler; a missing invocation or retried task may not produce the job-level failure event you expect.
Task-level events Individual task failures, including retry attempts when the platform exposes them. May create more notifications; confirm which attempts and destinations are covered.
External heartbeat or expected-success check Detecting a missed invocation or stale success even when no task failure was emitted. Requires an independently monitored check and does not prove notification delivery by itself.

Databricks documents destinations including email and administrator-configured integrations such as Slack, PagerDuty, Microsoft Teams, and HTTP webhooks. It warns that Slack and Teams message content can change; use a user-defined webhook when a specific payload schema is required, and avoid depending on undocumented message formatting.

Kubernetes CronJobs: schedule, time zone, and overlap

Kubernetes CronJobs create Jobs on a repeating schedule, but creation is approximate rather than an exactly-once guarantee. In Kubernetes v1.32 and later, a created Job receives the batch.kubernetes.io/cronjob-scheduled-timestamp annotation containing the original scheduled time in RFC3339 format (CronJob documentation).

Make the time zone explicit

Without .spec.timeZone, a CronJob uses the local time zone of the kube-controller-manager. A named time zone can be set with .spec.timeZone; putting TZ or CRON_TZ in the schedule expression is unsupported. CronJob time-zone support is stable from Kubernetes v1.27 (CronJob documentation).

Decide what happens when a run overlaps or is late

Review .spec.concurrencyPolicy against the job’s behavior. The API reference lists Allow as the default (Kubernetes CronJob API).

startingDeadlineSeconds sets how late a missed Job may start. Values below 10 seconds can prevent scheduling because the controller checks every 10 seconds. The controller will not start a Job when more than 100 schedules have been missed in the relevant counting window (CronJob documentation).

Kubernetes Jobs: distinguish retries from terminal failure

A failed Pod attempt is not necessarily a failed Job. Kubernetes recreates failed Pods with exponential backoff: 10 seconds, 20 seconds, 40 seconds, then increasing intervals capped at six minutes. The Job’s .spec.backoffLimit controls when retries are exhausted and the Job is considered failed. .spec.activeDeadlineSeconds can also terminate a Job; it takes precedence over the backoff limit (Kubernetes Jobs documentation).

The Job’s terminal conditions are Complete and Failed. On Kubernetes v1.31 and later, these conditions are added after all Job Pods have terminated. Alerting on an individual Pod failure may therefore be useful for attempt-level visibility, while final Job status answers whether the Job ultimately completed or failed.

Keep evidence long enough to diagnose failures

Retain Job status and logs for at least the team’s investigation and recovery window. Kubernetes CronJobs expose successfulJobsHistoryLimit and failedJobsHistoryLimit; the API reference lists defaults of three successful and one failed finished Job. Setting failed history to zero removes failed finished Jobs from that history. Kubernetes Jobs also support TTL cleanup after completion (CronJob API; Jobs documentation).

Coordinate object cleanup with log retention. If a short-lived Job object is the only pointer to diagnostic output, cleaning it up too soon can remove the evidence needed to understand and recover from a failure.
