For a Shopify store you control, use an authorized app with Shopify Admin API access and product-update webhooks, then keep a timestamped history and periodically reconcile it against the current catalog. For a storefront you do not control, you can observe only publicly exposed buyer-facing data—such as Storefront API results or rendered page content—not the merchant’s Admin API or webhooks.
The key to useful alerts is comparing the same variant, currency, country, and buyer context each time. A headless storefront can show different prices depending on those inputs, and product-level prices may represent a range across variants.
Choose the monitoring route that matches your access
“Headless” describes a storefront whose customer-facing experience is decoupled from Shopify’s commerce backend. It does not change who can access merchant-side data. Shopify distinguishes the buyer-facing Storefront API from the Admin API, which provides merchant-side access to store data. Shopify’s API overview describes those roles.

For your own shop, the authorized Admin API and webhook route is usually the right foundation. Shopify documents product price changes as a webhook use case. For a competitor’s store, do not assume you can install an app or subscribe to its Admin webhooks: use only publicly exposed information and follow current access rules.

Define what counts as a price change
Before collecting data, decide whether you mean a specific variant’s price, a product’s displayed starting price, or the full variant price range. Shopify’s buyer-facing Storefront API supports product and collection queries with contextualized price amounts; its headless guide also documents filtering products by price and availability. Record enough context to make two observations comparable:
- Shop and product identifiers, plus the variant identifier and selected options.
- Amount and currency, stored as decimal-safe values rather than floating-point approximations.
- Country or market and any buyer identity or other context used in the request.
- Observed timestamp, source route, and whether the value came from the API or rendered page.
Keep those inputs fixed for alerts. If the selected variant or currency changes, treat it as a different comparison rather than a price movement. A market-specific amount changing is not necessarily a change to the merchant’s base catalog price.

For a store you control: use webhooks and reconcile
- Authorize narrowly. Create or authorize an app with only the catalog-reading scopes and product-update subscription permissions your use case needs. Use a currently supported, pinned API version; check Shopify’s current requirements and event schema rather than relying on a stale version or scope list.
- Subscribe to the applicable product update topic. Shopify’s webhook reference explains subscriptions as a way for an app to act when events occur, instead of repeatedly checking status. Its examples include a product variant
pricefield. - Verify, acknowledge, and enqueue. Validate each request using Shopify’s current webhook verification guidance. Acknowledge promptly, then put the event into durable processing rather than doing slow catalog work in the request handler.
- Make handling idempotent. Deliveries may be repeated or delayed. Use an event identifier or suitable deduplication key when available, and ensure processing the same event twice does not create a false second change.
- Persist history. Store an append-only observation or change record containing product/variant identity, amount, currency, context, source, and time. Retain the previous value so repeated observations can be distinguished from actual changes.
- Reconcile on a schedule. Periodically read the current authorized API state and compare it with stored state. This is an engineering safeguard for missed deliveries, broken handlers, changed subscriptions, or outages; a webhook feed should not be treated as a guaranteed complete historical ledger.
- Alert only on meaningful differences. Apply thresholds or business rules after confirming the variant and currency match. Include old and new amounts, observed time, product link, and comparison context in each alert.
- Monitor the pipeline. Track delivery failures, handler errors, queue depth, last successful reconciliation, and subscription status. Shopify Help says a webhook subscription can be automatically deleted after repeated non-200 responses. Its Dev Dashboard monitoring and logs provide a first-party view of webhooks and app events.
Shopify Help lists changing a product’s price among common webhook use cases. The event is useful for low-latency notification; the scheduled comparison is what helps your own system recover when the event path fails.
For public-only monitoring: read exposed data carefully
The Storefront API is designed for buyer-facing commerce experiences across platforms, including web, apps, and games. It can expose published product information for headless storefronts, subject to the shop’s access configuration and Shopify’s current rules. Shopify’s filtering guide describes collection filtering by price and availability and specifies a Headless channel or custom-app access scope and API version 2022-01 or higher for that documented guide. Verify current requirements for the version you deploy.
For a competitor, a public API response or rendered page is not permission to access private merchant data. Shopify notes that automated Storefront API traffic and crawlers are limited, most strictly when unsigned; do not assume ordinary buyer traffic limits apply to a crawler. Review current controls and keep requests measured. There is no universal polling interval established by Shopify’s cited documentation.

- Request only the products and fields needed, cache observations, and avoid unnecessary repeated reads.
- Preserve the country, currency, and variant context alongside each result.
- If you use rendered pages, expect client-side rendering, layout changes, and bot controls to affect extraction; record failed or incomplete observations as such rather than as price changes.
- For a managed service, confirm it supports headless pages and the exact variant/market comparison you need, and check its history, export, alert delay, privacy, and pricing terms.
Store history so alerts remain trustworthy
A simple event record can be modeled as one row per distinct observation or accepted change. Keep identifiers and context explicit rather than relying on a product title, which can change.

Store observations even when the amount is unchanged if you need to measure freshness or prove when the system last saw the product. Keep change alerts separate from collection health alerts: a missing observation is not evidence that the price is unchanged.
Troubleshoot missed or misleading price alerts
- No webhook events arrive: Check that the app has the correct shop authorization, topic, permissions, and current subscription. Inspect delivery and app logs in the Shopify Dev Dashboard, then verify that your receiver is reachable and accepts valid requests.
- The subscription disappears: Repeated non-200 responses can lead Shopify to delete the webhook subscription. Fix the receiver’s response path, restore the subscription, and run reconciliation to identify any gap.
- The same change alerts twice: Account for duplicate or delayed delivery with idempotent handling and a deduplication key where available. Compare against the stored current state before creating an alert.
- A price appears to jump unexpectedly: Confirm the variant, currency, market/country, and buyer context match. A product-level range or localized amount can differ without the same variant’s comparable price changing.
- Public API requests are limited or fail: Review Shopify’s current Storefront API controls and whether your traffic is unsigned automated traffic. Reduce unnecessary requests, cache results, and do not treat restrictions as a reason to evade bot controls.
- Rendered-page extraction returns blank or inconsistent data: The page may need client-side rendering or may have changed. Confirm what the visitor-facing page actually exposes and distinguish capture failure from a real price observation.
- Reconciliation finds differences not seen in events: Check webhook subscription state, receiver uptime, queue processing, API version changes, and comparison context. Record the gap and let the current authorized API state repair the baseline.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Webhooks avoid repeatedly checking for each change and are suited to low-latency updates when you have authorization. They still require a dependable receiver and processing path, and Shopify’s documentation does not establish the stream as a complete historical ledger. Reconciliation consumes API reads but gives you a way to catch drift. For public monitoring, restrained reads, caching, and respect for automated-traffic limits matter; no general polling rate is guaranteed to work for every store or access mode.

For an owned store, account for the operational cost of securely storing app credentials, maintaining the receiver and queue, retaining history, and monitoring failures. For public observation or a hosted service, verify access limits and service terms before estimating scale. Price comparisons themselves are only meaningful when the context fields remain consistent.

Can I track competitor prices through Shopify webhooks?
No. Merchant-side Admin API access and webhook subscriptions require authorization; for another store, use only data it publicly exposes and follow applicable access rules.
Does a product update webhook prove that a customer-facing price changed?
Not by itself. Compare the same variant and buyer context, and confirm the current value against the relevant API or storefront view.
