Monitor multiple URLs in bulk by importing a prepared template or creating monitors through a provider’s API. Before adding endpoints, decide what each one should detect—public reachability, application health, or a customer action—then match the monitor type, HTTP method, regions, and alerts to that purpose.
Choose the signals before you add URLs
A list of URLs is useful only if each monitor represents a failure you need to know about. A public homepage can verify that visitors can reach the site, but it may be cached and remain available while an important dependency is failing. A health endpoint can check application readiness and selected dependencies. A synthetic transaction can test a customer journey such as checkout, but it must be safe to repeat without charging a card, creating an order, or changing production data.
Use separate monitors when reachability, application health, and a customer-facing action are distinct signals. Keep health endpoints lightweight and current. A common pattern is HTTP 200 when healthy and 503 when unavailable or not ready. Dependency checks should have short internal timeouts; cache behavior should not allow a stale health response to misrepresent current status. Do not expose credentials, stack traces, internal hostnames, or unnecessary infrastructure details in a health response. UptimeRobot’s URL guidance discusses endpoint and monitor behavior.

Template upload
For a one-time import or a manageable list, a spreadsheet-style template is often the simplest route. UptimeRobot’s documented workflow is to download its template, fill it in, and upload the completed file from the dashboard. Its documented fields include monitor type, URL or IP, interval, friendly name, keyword settings where applicable, port where applicable, and tags. The Help Center documents an interval range of 60 to 86400 seconds for that upload workflow; that range is specific to the described UptimeRobot template, not a universal limit. - Download the provider’s current bulk-upload template.
- Enter one monitor per row, using the required type and URL/IP fields; fill interval, name, tags, and type-specific fields as appropriate.
- Check URL spelling, protocol, duplicate rows, and interval values before uploading.
- Upload the file through the provider’s dashboard and review any rejected rows or validation messages.
- Verify that imported monitors use the expected check types, regions, and alert routing.
API automation
For repeatable onboarding, infrastructure-managed fleets, or frequent changes, use the monitoring provider’s API to create, update, and delete monitors. UptimeRobot says its REST API supports these operations and bulk operations; it also says API access is included across plans, with request-rate limits varying by plan. Check its current documentation and plan terms before designing around rate limits or allowances, which can change. UptimeRobot’s API documentation also lists webhook alerts and integrations.
For reliable API-driven enrollment, keep the URL inventory and desired monitor settings in a version-controlled source, make provisioning repeatable, and reconcile the resulting monitors against that source. Handle partial failures rather than assuming a batch succeeds atomically: record which endpoints were created or rejected, and retry only the failed operations according to the provider’s API guidance.
Match the monitor type and request to the endpoint

These distinctions are described in UptimeRobot’s monitor-type guide. A basic URL check does not prove that a whole workflow works; use content validation or a safe synthetic transaction when that is the signal you need.

Choose HTTP method deliberately
UptimeRobot says HTTP checks use HEAD by default. HEAD checks status and headers without downloading the response body; GET retrieves the body and is appropriate when you need to validate content or data. Some servers, CDNs, and security rules do not handle HEAD as expected. Select a method the endpoint is designed to answer; the provider also documents additional methods for endpoints that require them. UptimeRobot’s URL guidance notes that a site can load in a browser while an uptime monitor reports it down because request method, IP, user agent, location, caching, or security rules differ.
Configure regions and interpret failures correctly
Regional monitoring can help distinguish a local routing or access problem from a broader outage, but a provider’s region and confirmation behavior determines what an alert means. UptimeRobot’s July 31, 2026 documentation describes checks from selected regions in a round-robin pattern—not simultaneous checks from every selected region. It describes up to four regions: North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The same guide says monitor regions can be updated in bulk; free-plan users can select one region in bulk updates, while paid-plan users can select multiple regions. Verify current plan terms before relying on these plan distinctions. Read UptimeRobot’s multi-region instructions.
In that documented UptimeRobot behavior, a region is marked down after three consecutive failed checks there. Later regional failures are attached to the same incident, and the monitor recovers after all configured regions recover. A failure does not have to occur in multiple regions before the monitor is marked down. This is provider-specific behavior, not a general rule for uptime services.

Compare providers against your actual monitoring needs
Vendor documentation establishes feature distinctions, not an independent performance ranking. Compare providers on the dimensions that affect your endpoints and response workflow:
- Bulk onboarding: whether you can use a template, API operations, or both.
- Check coverage: basic HTTP, content checks, network-level checks, heartbeats, and any application/API assertions you require.
- Intervals and plan limits: confirm current documentation or pricing; limits and allowances can change.
- Regions and confirmation: identify where checks originate, whether they run simultaneously or in rotation, how failures are confirmed, and whether regional failures are visible.
- Alert response: make sure alerts route to the people and systems responsible for acting on them.
- Browser-level testing: if the requirement is page speed or a multi-step browser interaction rather than URL availability, evaluate a service that explicitly supports it.
For example, Pingdom describes page-speed monitoring and synthetic transaction tests in a real Chrome browser, including registrations, logins, searches, and shopping-cart checkout. That is a different class of check from simply polling many URLs. Pingdom’s transaction-monitoring page describes those capabilities.

The upload rejects rows
Check the provider’s current template rather than assuming another service’s columns are compatible. Validate required fields, monitor-type-specific values, URL/IP formatting, interval range, and any keyword or port fields before retrying.
A URL works in a browser but reports down
Compare the monitor’s request method, source location, IP, user agent, caching path, and security rules with browser traffic. A HEAD request may be treated differently from GET, and a CDN or security layer may block monitoring traffic. Use the endpoint’s intended method and adjust provider-side settings or access rules where appropriate.

The monitor reports up, but the application is unhealthy
A homepage or cached response may still be available while a dependency is failing. Add a lightweight health endpoint that reflects the dependencies you need to test, or a safe synthetic transaction for the customer action that must work.
Regional status seems inconsistent
Check whether the provider checks regions in rotation or simultaneously and how many consecutive failures trigger a down state. For UptimeRobot’s documented multi-region behavior, regions are checked round-robin and each region’s down state follows three consecutive failed checks.

Inspect per-operation responses and rate-limit behavior in the provider’s current API documentation. Reconcile the created monitor set against your intended inventory, then retry only missing or rejected operations rather than blindly re-creating the full fleet.
