To monitor MAP pricing across retailer websites, keep a current, versioned minimum advertised price (MAP) policy and product list, check the retailer pages and marketplace sellers that matter, record each observed price with its context and evidence, then compare it with the applicable policy and route possible exceptions to a person for review. A software alert is a lead to investigate—not a legal conclusion or proof that a retailer violated a policy.
Set up a reliable MAP monitoring workflow
1. Maintain a versioned policy and product register
For each covered product or product family, record a stable identifier such as the manufacturer SKU, UPC/EAN, or relevant marketplace identifier; the advertised-price threshold; currency and territory; policy version and effective date; covered sellers; and applicable exceptions. Keep prior versions when terms or prices change rather than overwriting them. A single global price list can produce misleading alerts if thresholds vary by product, market, or effective date.
2. Choose retailers, marketplaces, and sellers
List the authorized retailers and marketplaces to monitor, and decide whether finding unknown sellers is also part of the project. A marketplace product page or buy box may not show every seller or preserve seller identity. Seller authorization and MAP compliance are separate questions: a seller can be unauthorized without an observed below-MAP price, or authorized while displaying a price that merits review. 3. Capture a complete observation
Each check should retain enough information for someone else to reproduce and assess it:

- Product identifier and exact variant, pack size, or configuration
- Retailer or marketplace, listing URL, and seller identity when available
- Displayed price and currency, including coupon, promotion, bundle, or rebate context
- Availability or stock state when relevant to the policy
- Timestamp and time zone
- Screenshot or equivalent page evidence
- Applicable policy version and threshold

4. Match the product before comparing prices
Confirm that the listing is the covered SKU and configuration. Similar names or images may conceal different variants, regional versions, bundles, or pack sizes. Ask how a tool verifies automated matches and how it flags uncertain ones for human review. Altosight describes AI matching with human verification, but its accuracy statements are vendor claims, not independently established benchmarks: Altosight MAP monitoring.
5. Review candidate alerts before taking action
A reviewer should verify the listing, seller, product match, territory, current policy, displayed price, and promotion context. Determine whether the price is publicly advertised or appears only at a later purchase step if the policy makes that distinction. Save both the evidence and the review outcome, and escalate ambiguous cases rather than automatically accusing a seller.

Decide what counts as an advertised price under your policy
MAP policies do not necessarily treat every discount, coupon, bundle, rebate, or checkout price the same way. The policy’s wording and applicable law matter. Record the page state and the clause governing the observed price rather than assuming a low number is automatically a violation.
An Enerpac policy reproduced in an FTC-hosted paper says that pricing listed on an internet site is an advertised price, while pricing associated with an actual internet order becomes the selling price and is not bound by that particular policy. This is one company’s policy example, not a rule for every brand: FTC-hosted Enerpac policy paper.
Choose a monitoring approach that fits your coverage needs
Dedicated monitoring dashboard
A dashboard may bring catalog setup, retailer and seller monitoring, alerts, screenshots, history, reports, and follow-up workflow together. Vendor descriptions vary: Priceva describes screenshot records, seller detection, exports, and configurable scan frequency; Altosight describes scheduled scans, seller histories, product matching, and country/currency settings; Cobalt describes comparing uploaded MAP prices against active offers and surfacing flags in seller and product views. Treat these as product descriptions, not independently verified guarantees. Demonstrate the workflow on your own representative pages.

Custom data pipeline
A technical team can collect retailer-page data into its own analytics, seller-intelligence, or review systems. This offers more control over extraction, storage, and alert logic, but scripts can break when retailer pages change and require ongoing engineering and data-quality work. Extralt describes data collection, processing, and analytics recipes rather than a managed MAP enforcement platform.

- Which retailers, marketplaces, countries, and currencies are actually covered?
- Can the system distinguish sellers on the same marketplace listing and retain seller identity over time?
- How are variants, bundles, and regional SKUs matched? Can reviewers inspect uncertain matches?
- How often can checks run, and what do terms such as “real time” or “daily” mean in practice?
- Does each alert include timestamp, URL, price, seller, screenshot, and the policy threshold used?
- How long is history retained, and can records be exported in usable formats or accessed through an API?
- How are checkout-only prices, coupons, bundles, out-of-stock listings, and inaccessible pages represented?
- Does the tool only monitor, or does it also support a separately configured follow-up workflow? Who approves seller contact?
- What are the actual setup, coverage, and support terms?
Coverage, setup, and support should be confirmed with each provider; product descriptions alone do not establish that a particular site or workflow will be supported.
Understand the legal and policy limits
MAP monitoring is legally sensitive and jurisdiction-dependent. The FTC’s manufacturer guidance distinguishes unilateral manufacturer requirements from agreements among competing manufacturers or dealers, and discusses antitrust concerns around broad MAP restrictions tied to cooperative advertising. It also notes that state antitrust laws and international authorities may differ. Consult counsel familiar with the relevant jurisdictions when drafting or enforcing a policy: FTC guidance on manufacturer-imposed requirements.

The Enerpac example also says distributors and retailers are free to sell its products at prices they choose; that statement describes that policy, not the legal effect of every MAP policy. Monitoring software creates observations. It cannot determine whether a policy or enforcement step is lawful, or whether a listing establishes a breach.

How often should I check retailer prices?
Set the interval according to the risk, retailer coverage, and review capacity you need; compare providers using the actual check frequency they can deliver for your pages rather than relying on labels such as “real time.”
Can a below-MAP alert prove a retailer violated the policy?
No. It identifies an observation to review. Confirm the product, seller, territory, policy version, and advertising context before drawing a conclusion.
