Use a repeatable, dated observation log—not occasional app browsing. Check the same delivery address, marketplace, competitors, menu equivalents, prices, promotions, availability, delivery estimates and search placement at several dayparts. Then compare patterns with your own sales data while following each platform’s current merchant terms.

What competitor monitoring should tell you

A useful report answers practical questions: What does a nearby restaurant charge for an equivalent meal? Is the item available now? Is a discount changing the effective price? What delivery time does the customer see? Where does the listing appear for a relevant search or collection?

These are observations at a particular place and time, not permanent market facts. Keep the observation date, local time, platform, delivery address and search terms with every record.

Set up a consistent comparison

1. Fix the customer location

Use the same complete delivery address or marketplace location for every check. Delivery fees, menus, availability, estimated times and search results can change when the location changes. Record the location or a non-sensitive internal location ID.

2. Choose the marketplaces

Check the services customers in your area actually use. DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub may be important, but a 2024 peer-reviewed study mapped 495 independent US food-delivery platforms, so local services can matter too. Treat each platform as a separate observation set rather than merging results into one supposedly universal ranking.

3. Keep a stable competitor set

Start with nearby restaurants that sell a comparable cuisine or occasion. Keep a core set for trend reporting and add a clearly marked watch list when a new entrant appears. Do not change the set every week or you will mistake a sample change for a market change.

What to record on every visit

Field How to record it
Context Platform, delivery location, date, local time and daypart
Restaurant identity Displayed name, address or area and platform listing URL if your policy permits retaining it
Comparable item Same product type, size, serving count, options and modifiers
Price Listed item price, modifiers and fees separately; record promotion or discount separately
Availability Available, sold out, temporarily unavailable or listing unavailable
Fulfilment Displayed delivery estimate and any pickup estimate
Visibility Search term, filter or collection and observed position or page

Never compare a base item at one restaurant with a larger size or extra toppings at another. Preserve the displayed price and the discounted price as separate values; otherwise a temporary offer becomes indistinguishable from normal pricing.

Repeat checks to find patterns

  1. Sample dayparts: check at least a normal lunch, dinner and a busier period relevant to your operation.
  2. Repeat dates: revisit on multiple weekdays and weekends. One late estimate or promotion should not trigger a permanent menu decision.
  3. Use identical inputs: keep address, search wording, filters, item configuration and logged-in state consistent where possible.
  4. Compare within platform first: a DoorDash result and an Uber Eats result are different storefront experiences and should not be treated as a single rank.
  5. Annotate anomalies: note weather, holidays, outages, unusual demand or an obvious platform-wide promotion.

Interpreting ranking, prices and delivery times

Ranking is not a diagnosis

DoorDash says restaurant ranking reflects customer preferences and names popularity, speed, order accuracy and pricing as variables. That is the platform’s description, not independent proof that any one factor caused a listing position. A single observation cannot reveal why a restaurant ranked where it did.

Price is a strategic input

DoorDash states that delivery prices do not have to match in-store prices, recommends keeping them close, and says markups can negatively affect conversion and retention. This is DoorDash’s position rather than universal causal evidence. Compare your effective customer price with competitors, but also examine portion, modifiers, fees, promotions and fulfilment speed.

Delivery estimates are snapshots

An estimate reflects the selected location, current capacity and time of observation. Track its range over repeated checks instead of presenting one number as a service-level guarantee.

Use your own systems without confusing the data

Keep platform observations separate from your POS, order, margin and repeat-customer data. Your sales data can show whether a menu or price change affected your business; marketplace observations describe what a customer could see. Join them only in an internal report with clear timestamps and definitions.

DoorDash’s Merchant Portal Menu Editor supports menu names, categories, prices, modifiers, options and availability. Some POS and middleware configurations also support channel-specific menus, prices and availability. DoorDash’s Australia documentation describes differentiated pricing and menu overrides through Toast, Olo Rails, Checkmate, Otter, Chowly and Deliverect; instructions vary by provider, country and version. DoorDash’s 2025 preferred-integration announcement named Checkmate, Chowly, ChowNow, Deliverect, Otter, PAR, Qu, Square, Stream, Toast and UrbanPiper and said qualifying providers met stated order/error benchmarks below 1% as assessed May 12, 2025. Those are DoorDash’s stated criteria, not independent verification of every vendor.

Compliance and data handling

Review the current merchant agreement and applicable law before collecting, retaining, combining or sharing marketplace data. Uber’s US merchant terms place conditions on menu and pickup-price data and restrict specified uses of Uber Olo Data, including disclosure to Uber competitors. That agreement is not a universal rule: applicability depends on your contract, integration and market.

No universal authorized competitor-monitoring API or blanket permission for automated scraping is established here. Prefer permitted, human-visible observations or an officially documented export. Do not bypass bot checks, access controls or account restrictions. Limit retained personal data, protect screenshots and logs, and document who may access them.

A practical reporting workflow

  1. Create a spreadsheet or database with fixed fields and controlled values for availability and daypart.
  2. Run the same competitor list and location on each selected platform.
  3. Capture the comparable item configuration and record list price, promotion, availability, estimate and placement.
  4. Calculate effective price after the recorded promotion, but retain the original displayed values.
  5. Review weekly or at a cadence suited to your menu. Flag repeated changes rather than isolated outliers.
  6. Decide one operational action—such as testing a modifier, adjusting a channel price or improving availability—and define the measurement period.

Capturing evidence from a browser

For an internal audit, save the observation time, page URL and a screenshot only where platform terms and your privacy policy allow it. A screenshot is supporting evidence, not a substitute for structured fields. Redact customer addresses, names and order details before sharing.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo can capture a marketplace page with one request while you keep the comparison method above. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for authentication and options. A basic capture is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Replace the URL with the permitted marketplace page. You can also use the supplied Python or Node.js clients:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page capture, CSS-selected elements, device and viewport settings, dark mode, retina scale, custom CSS or JavaScript, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, geolocation, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks and bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call. Use those options only when your platform agreement permits the requested access and retention.

Troubleshooting

Results change between checks

Verify the address, time, account state, filters and item modifiers. Record the change rather than overwriting the earlier observation.

An item appears unavailable

Check again later and mark the exact status. It may be a daypart rule, inventory setting or temporary pause.

Your price comparison looks wrong

Match size, quantity, modifiers and promotion status. Separate menu price, fees and discount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A screenshot is blank or blocked

Do not bypass a CAPTCHA or access control. Confirm permission, use a supported browser workflow, or record structured observations manually. With ScreenshotNeo, inspect the X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed response headers; failed loads, blank pages, bot checks, timeouts and cache hits are not billed.

A POS integration does not match the marketplace

Check country, provider version, channel override settings and synchronization time. Integration documentation and capabilities can change.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should a restaurant monitor competitors?

Use a cadence that captures your meaningful dayparts and repeats dates; weekly reporting with additional checks around launches or promotions is a practical starting point.

Should I monitor only DoorDash and Uber Eats?

No. Include the platforms customers use locally, including independent services, and document why each platform is in your comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I automate competitor scraping?

Do not assume permission. Check each platform’s current terms and use documented access or permitted human-visible observations.

What is the most important comparison field?

There is no single field. Equivalent item configuration, listed versus promotional price, availability, delivery estimate, placement, location and timestamp must be read together.

The Bottom Line

Consistent location, equivalent items, repeated timestamps and platform-specific compliance turn delivery-app browsing into an operational signal you can act on.
