Build an n8n workflow that reads product URLs from Google Sheets, retrieves each page at a measured cadence, validates its displayed price, records a timestamped history, and updates a separate current-price table. Send alerts only when a successfully validated observation meets a change threshold. Before monitoring a retailer, check its terms, access controls, and any official API or feed; the example delay in an n8n template is not blanket permission to make requests at that rate.
Plan the watch list and collection method
First check whether a retailer offers an official product API or feed. Prefer an authorized, stable source when one is available. If page retrieval is appropriate, use a small list and conservative schedule, and follow the site’s published conditions. The available n8n examples describe a workflow pattern; they do not establish that any particular Indian retailer permits automated retrieval or provide verified retailer-specific selectors.
Set up one row per comparable product variant
Create a Google Sheets tab named Watchlist with columns such as:

Keep product size, model, seller, and other variant details distinct. A different seller, pack size, delivery charge, or discount can make two displayed figures non-comparable even when the product names look alike.

Create separate history and current-state tabs
Use an append-only History tab for each observation and a Current tab with one row per product_key. For auditability, capture the timestamp, competitor, product key, URL, displayed price text, normalized price, currency, previous value, difference or percentage, and extraction status. Store a snapshot reference or normalized page fingerprint when practical, so a price change can be checked against evidence. An n8n change-detection template describes retaining page evidence, but that is a design idea rather than verified performance evidence.
Build the n8n workflow
The n8n community example uses a scheduled trigger, reads URLs and prior prices, loops through items with a delay, fetches and extracts a price using a CSS selector, compares values, appends history, and updates a master sheet. - Schedule. Add a Schedule Trigger. Set the time zone deliberately and choose an interval that fits your monitoring need and the target site’s published conditions. The cited example runs daily at 8 AM server time; that is an example, not a required cadence.
- Read active rows. Use a Google Sheets node to read the watch list, then filter to rows marked active. Avoid processing blank or malformed URLs.
- Process a bounded batch. Loop through a small number of products at a time. Add a delay appropriate to the site and your approved access. The cited n8n example uses a 20-second delay and says to adjust it for the target; it is not a universally safe or permitted interval.
- Retrieve the page or feed. Use an HTTP Request node for an authorized source. Handle redirects, response codes, and timeouts explicitly. Do not treat a block page, challenge, or error response as a product page.
- Extract the intended price. Parse the precise price field for the intended seller and variant. Preserve the original displayed text as evidence, then normalize the numeric value and currency without assuming a decimal or thousands-separator convention.
- Validate before comparison. Reject missing or ambiguous values, unexpected currency, selector misses, and implausible jumps for review. A page redesign should produce an extraction error, not a price-change alert.
- Read the prior current value. Look up the row by stable
product_key, not by row position. Calculate the difference or percentage only when both observations are valid and comparable. - Append an observation. Add a timestamped row to
History, including extraction status even when no valid price was obtained. This preserves a trace of failed runs instead of making silence look like an unchanged price. - Update current state. Update or upsert the
Currentrow keyed byproduct_key; do not append a new current row on every run. - Branch to alerts. Send a notification only after validation and only if the chosen absolute or percentage threshold is met. Include the product, observed and prior prices, currency, time, URL, and any uncertainty.
Append history and update the latest value
Google Sheets API spreadsheets.values.append searches the specified range for a logical table and adds values after its last row. It requires a spreadsheet ID, range, and valueInputOption; use it for append-only history rows. For the current-value view, use an update or upsert keyed by the stable product identifier so repeated runs do not create duplicate current rows. See Google’s values.append reference.
If using n8n’s Google Sheets node, configure the history operation to append and the current-state operation to update by a reliable key (or implement a lookup followed by update/insert). Confirm the chosen node operation’s behavior with a test row before enabling the schedule; a row-number update is fragile if the sheet is sorted or edited.

Handle quotas, retries, and run cost
Google publishes limits of 300 read requests per minute and 300 write requests per minute per project, with 60 reads and 60 writes per minute per user per project. The Sheets API recommends a maximum request payload of 2 MB for speed and truncated exponential backoff for time-based quota errors. Requests that exceed rate limits can return HTTP 429. Check the current usage-limits page before deployment because quotas and billing notices can change.
- Batch sheet reads and writes where practical rather than making a separate spreadsheet request for every field.
- Use bounded retries with increasing delays for quota-related failures; avoid an unbounded retry loop.
- Record the failed operation and resume safely. Make history writes and current-row updates idempotent where possible so a retry does not create duplicate observations or alerts.
- Do not repeatedly retry a retailer block or challenge as though it were a transient Sheets quota error.
- Track workflow execution volume and schedule: more URLs and more frequent runs mean more retrievals and sheet operations. Choose a cadence only as often as the business decision requires and the source permits.
India-specific legal and data considerations
The Department of Consumer Affairs lists the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 and amendments on its consumer protection and e-commerce legislation page. This is a reason for Indian commercial operators to review applicable rules, not a determination that price monitoring is automatically permitted or prohibited. Site terms, access controls, official APIs or feeds, and intended commercial use also matter; seek qualified legal advice for high-stakes deployments.

The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 is relevant context for processing digital personal data in India. A competitor-price watch list ordinarily has no need for customer names, account details, or other personal information; keep the collected data focused on products and prices. The Act’s commencement and applicable rules may affect a particular deployment, so this article does not determine an operator’s legal position.
Troubleshoot common failures
