An HLS/DASH canary monitor repeatedly requests manifests from configured origins, parses them, and reports problems such as fetch failures, stale content, or format-specific validation issues. The AWS Samples canary is a Python implementation that can also inspect optional segments and ad-tracking data. Treat it as an origin-side data-plane check—not proof that viewers can play the stream successfully on every device.
The current repository instructions are for v3, released in March 2026. Start with its settings.yaml and updated endpoint CSV format; the command-line setup shown in AWS’s August 2024 blog is older and should not be copied as v3 instructions. The canary is primarily designed for AWS Elemental MediaPackage and MediaTailor origins, but AWS describes it as usable with various origins.
What a canary monitor checks—and what it does not
A canary behaves like a client that periodically downloads and inspects configured stream data. It can help surface origin-side faults before an operator receives a viewer complaint. As AWS for M&E Blog author Tomas Juraska put it on 15 August 2024, “Monitoring the data plane of an ABR stream can help prevent and resolve unexpected issues with playback or monetization by proactively alerting operators to potential issues.” This describes a monitoring purpose, not a quantified reliability guarantee. AWS’s conceptual overview explains the older feature set.

- It can tell you: whether the configured endpoint responds, how long requests take, whether manifests parse and satisfy selected checks, and whether selected timing or ad-signaling values appear abnormal.
- It cannot establish by itself: that every rendition is visually or audibly correct, that a player can decode the content, or that every CDN route, device, and viewer network can play it.
Use origin inspection alongside playback tests. Apple documents mediastreamvalidator as a separate command-line utility for HLS stream and server validation; it is not a substitute for testing the actual player and device combinations important to your audience. See Apple’s HLS deployment guidance.
HLS and DASH checks: shared goals, different signals
The formats share operational questions—does the manifest load, is it current, and does its signaling look coherent? Their structures differ, so do not assume every check applies to both formats or that their validations are feature-identical.

Choose local or AWS-integrated operation
The canary can run locally without sending data to AWS by default; the repository says this mode does not require an AWS account. Cloud integrations are optional and need deliberate configuration, credentials, permissions, and decisions about report retention.

- Check the runtime and dependencies. The current README lists Python 3.9 or newer and dependencies including
lxml,deepdiff,threefive,Jinja2,boto3/botocore,urllib3,isodate,python-json-logger, andPyYAML. Follow the repository’s current installation procedure rather than assuming package versions or commands that may have changed. - Review
settings.yaml. Inspect the current configuration for polling, enabled checks, thresholds, logging/report behavior, and any optional AWS integrations. Confirm the defaults in the version you install; do not infer that a blog example or an old configuration option still applies. - Prepare endpoint CSV input. In local input mode, supply live endpoints in CSV files under the
originsfolder. A row identifies endpoint type, protocol technology, workload, endpoint and origin names, whether dynamic ad insertion applies, a monitoring configuration, and the manifest URL. A tracking URL can also be supplied. Match the exact v3 CSV syntax in the README. The README example uses a DASH MPD URL. - Validate reachability from the monitor host. Check that the host can resolve and reach each manifest URL and, where applicable, tracking and segment URLs. Verify required authentication, network routes, and access controls from that host—not just from an engineer’s workstation.
- Begin with a low-risk scope. Start with a small number of non-production or otherwise low-risk endpoints if that fits your environment. Confirm that the monitor identifies the intended protocol and workload and produces understandable logs and reports before expanding coverage.
- Run through normal stream behavior. Observe ordinary playlist refreshes, rendition changes, DASH periods, discontinuities, and expected ad behavior. Compare suspicious findings with origin logs and playback observations before treating them as incidents.
- Enable integrations only as needed. For CloudWatch metrics or dashboards, S3 reports, or management resources, configure only the features you intend to use. Confirm the AWS region, role or credentials, least-privilege permissions, and retention settings before relying on those outputs.
- Route actionable alerts and retain incident evidence. Alert on failures that warrant a response—such as repeated fetch errors, persistent staleness, parsing or compliance failures, or mismatched ad signaling. Preserve relevant reports and manifests around incidents where policy and access controls permit; archived data can help with troubleshooting.
- Pair checks with playback validation. Add player-side or synthetic playback checks for the player, device, and network paths that matter. For HLS, Apple’s
mediastreamvalidatoris another validation input, not a demonstration that viewers on every target device can watch successfully.
Set polling, thresholds, and alerts around the stream
Choose a polling cadence and stale threshold based on segment cadence, acceptable delivery delay, and the response time your operators need. The AWS blog’s five-second polling example and stale threshold are historical example values, not universal recommendations. Use v3’s current settings and supported parameters to implement the policy.
- Define “stale” operationally. Decide how long the endpoint may go without a new segment before an alert is useful. Account for the stream’s segment duration and ordinary publishing delays.
- Separate expected transitions from faults. Confirm how normal rendition changes, discontinuities, period transitions, and ad breaks appear before setting alarms. Otherwise, expected behavior can create alert noise.
- Make each metric actionable. Repository examples include request status and latency, buffer-fill duration, HLS program-date-time delta, DASH PTS and segment-availability delta, segment duration, and advertised-versus-observed ad-break duration. Tie each alarm to a diagnostic or response action.
- Escalate persistence and context. A single slow request may deserve different handling from repeated fetch failures or a continuing lack of new segments. Correlate canary findings with origin logs and playback evidence.
MediaPackage’s CloudWatch service metrics can complement the canary, but they answer a different question: service telemetry describes the service, while the canary requests and parses endpoint data. Neither alone demonstrates successful playback through every viewer path.

Troubleshoot common canary findings
| Symptom | Likely causes to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Manifest fetch errors | URL typo, endpoint access control, expired or missing credentials, DNS or routing problems, or the origin being unavailable from the monitor host. | Test the exact URL and access path from the monitor host, then verify authentication and network configuration. |
| Manifest appears stale | Origin publication has stopped or slowed, the configured stale interval is too aggressive for the segment cadence, or the endpoint is reachable but not advancing. | Compare manifest refreshes and segment timestamps with origin behavior; adjust the threshold only if normal publishing cadence supports it. |
| Parsing or compliance failure | Malformed or unexpected manifest content, a real format issue, or a transition that the selected check treats as anomalous. | Preserve the affected manifest, identify the specific validation, and compare it with expected stream behavior and origin logs. |
| HLS discontinuity or version/target-duration change flagged | A legitimate stream transition or a manifest change that needs validation. | Check whether the change was expected and whether associated segments and timestamps remain coherent. |
| DASH timeline gap or adaptation-set timing difference | A publication gap, timing mismatch, or expected period/adaptation-set transition. | Inspect the MPD timeline and relevant segment availability around the reported times; correlate with playback observations. |
| Ad-break duration or tracking mismatch | Advertised break signaling differs from observed content duration, tracking data cannot be reached, or expected ad behavior is not represented in the configuration. | Verify the endpoint’s ad-insertion setup, tracking URL reachability, and expected break behavior before escalating. |
| Canary is green but viewers report playback failure | The origin manifest check succeeded while a CDN, rendition, codec, player, device, or viewer-network path failed. | Run playback tests on affected paths and inspect segment delivery and player-side diagnostics; a manifest pass is not an end-to-end playback result. |
| CloudWatch metrics or S3 reports are absent | Integration not enabled, wrong region or destination, missing permission, or host credentials not configured as expected. | Review current v3 configuration and setup files, then verify destination, region, role/credentials, and least-privilege permissions. |
Keep stream hosting separate from stream monitoring
StreamNeo is a separate YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on a YouTube channel. It is not an HLS/DASH origin canary, does not monitor arbitrary endpoints, and does not go live from a camera. If your separate need is to keep uploaded content running on YouTube, StreamNeo offers a cloud workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The computer at home does not have to stay on; uploaded media streams as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
Plans use the same product and differ by duration: Daily $0.99 per day · Weekly $2.99 per week · Monthly $9.99 per month · 6 months $49.99 for 6 months · Yearly $89.99 a year. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Five or more slots: contact support. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB pooled storage per active slot, looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and StreamNeo team support. See StreamNeo pricing.
For the canary-monitoring task, use the repository and playback checks above. For the separate YouTube hosting workflow, upload your video, add the stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; quality up to 4K 60fps is included at one price per slot; automatic recovery handles a YouTube drop; and the first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
