GitHub Actions does not guarantee that a scheduled workflow will start on time—or start at all. For important jobs, use GitHub’s completion notifications for runs that do occur and an independent watchdog that checks whether each expected run has appeared within an acceptable grace period.

Why a scheduled GitHub Actions workflow can be missed

GitHub warns that scheduled events can be delayed when Actions is busy, particularly at the beginning of an hour; some queued jobs may be dropped. Moving a cron schedule away from minute zero can reduce exposure to peak load, but it does not guarantee delivery or detect a run that never starts. See GitHub’s workflow troubleshooting guidance.

Configuration can also prevent an expected run. A scheduled workflow file must exist on the repository’s default branch, and schedule runs use the latest commit on that branch. A workflow may have been disabled, and GitHub may automatically disable scheduled workflows in public repositories after 60 days without repository activity. Scheduled workflows in public forks are disabled by default. These conditions are documented in GitHub’s workflow event documentation and guidance on disabling and enabling workflows.

Choose the right kind of alert

Approach What it detects Limitation
GitHub email or web notifications Completed workflow runs, including failures if failure-only notifications are configured. A completion notification cannot establish that a run which never started was missed. Verify that notifications go to an actively monitored account; recipients for scheduled workflows are associated with the cron editor or, in some circumstances, the person who re-enabled the workflow. See GitHub notification settings.
Independent expected-run watchdog Whether a matching run has appeared by the expected time plus a defined grace period. It requires its own schedule, expected-run logic, and alert delivery. If it relies on the same scheduled workflow it monitors, a missed trigger could suppress the alert too.

Use both for critical workflows: GitHub notifications cover outcomes of runs that happen, while a separate checker covers absence. The watchdog recommendation follows from GitHub’s documented possibility of delayed or dropped schedule events; it is not a built-in GitHub guarantee or feature.

Design a missed-run monitor

1. Inventory the workflows that matter

For each critical workflow, record the repository, workflow identity, cron cadence, time zone, and maximum acceptable delay. Define what counts as a matching run and successful completion for that particular job; a workflow that ran but failed is different from one that never started.

2. Calculate expected occurrences correctly

GitHub schedule triggers use POSIX cron syntax, default to UTC, and can optionally specify an IANA time zone. The shortest supported interval is once every five minutes. For schedules using a time zone that observes daylight saving time, an occurrence set during an hour skipped in the spring advances to the next valid time. Calculate expected runs using the workflow’s actual cron expression and configured time zone rather than assuming every schedule is UTC or that local clock times always exist. Details are in GitHub’s schedule event documentation.

3. Track last observed runs and apply a grace period

Have the checker compare the current time with each workflow’s next expected occurrence and most recent matching run. Alert only when the expected occurrence is overdue by a grace period you choose. Set that period to accommodate ordinary queue delays while still meeting the workflow’s business deadline; GitHub does not prescribe a universal timeout. The checker should run independently of the workflow being monitored so a missed schedule does not disable both the job and its alert.

4. Maintain alert ownership

Choose an actively monitored destination for watchdog alerts and verify it remains owned as team membership changes. Keep GitHub email or web notifications enabled as a complementary signal for completed or failed runs, and periodically confirm that their recipients are still appropriate.

Why didn’t my scheduled workflow run?

When an alert fires—or a run is unexpectedly absent—check these causes in order:

  1. Confirm the workflow is enabled. Check its status in GitHub Actions; a manually disabled workflow will not run on schedule.
  2. Confirm the workflow file is on the default branch. Scheduled runs use the latest commit on that branch, and the file must exist there.
  3. Recalculate the occurrence. Validate the cron expression and configured time zone, including daylight-saving behavior where relevant.
  4. Check repository status. In a public repository, consider automatic disabling after 60 days without activity; in a public fork, check whether the schedule is disabled by default.
  5. Allow for queue delay. GitHub documents delays during high Actions load. If the run appears within your defined grace period, treat it as delayed rather than missed.

Reduce schedule delays without confusing them with monitoring

If a workflow currently runs at the start of an hour, move it to another minute when practical. GitHub recommends avoiding the start of the hour because it is a high-load period. This can reduce the chance of delay, but only an independent expected-run check can alert you that a run has not appeared.
